waitresses don't trade affection for money, so it is different.

again, if dancing were 'just like any other job', the money would not be so much better. and in fact, the money's dropping partly because the stigma has significantly lessened among the genpop.

    Default I dance because

There has been considerable discussion about the reasons men come to clubs and women dance. So in that vein I would be really interested in responses to this poll from the dancers

I would say that the vast majority of people go to work to make money, regardless of occupation.

    Agree,
Then what is it about dancing that attracts you?

As with any job, sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't, but I'm there primarily to earn a living.

I don't see why people think dancing is somehow exempt from the simple facts of life. I never hear people asking, "So why did you want to be a secretary? Do you really love the experience or is it just about the money?"

People see it that way because it is that way. It is a completely different occupation than being a secretary or a cashier. Some girls love to dance, and they do it for far more than the money.

I have always had a love of dancing. I'd like to say I've only done it for the money, but that would be a lie. I am not nearly as in love with money as I am with myself.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy it most of the time, but I'm not there for charity work. It's a job.

I was a waitress for almost 10 years and not once did anyone ever ask me, "So why did you want to be a waitress?"

The hell they don't. When I was a waitress, the restaurant paid me $2.13 an hour, so I was working for tips just as I am now. And I wasn't going to earn a living by handing out food. I had to flirt, stroke egos, make stimulating chitchat, and look sexy, or I went home broke. What other job does that sound like to you?

For me, the answer is pretty complicated...And no, money was not the primary reason (though it was certainly a big incentive.)

But honestly, I think that anyone in a non-traditional job will be asked about how and why they got into it....

Like, when I meet a woman who says she works in construction, I will always ask her how she got into it, and I'll be interested to know more about her work experiences.

When I am working as a field biologist--doing really cool education/outreach work for non-profit conservation organizations, or humping 40-lb packs over truly treacherous terrain, skirting abundant cactus and assorted unexploded ordnance on a military base in an attempt to save an endangered species--people often ask me how I got involved in such interesting, unusual work.

When I was working in traditionally-female, “pink-collar” jobs, I was never asked such questions.

It's because the job is unusual, that's all....As writers, we should be glad that people are still curious about it, right?

I really dont want a regular job. I would only go back to the regular work force if Im getting into the field I really want. Other than that dancing is a way for me to freely live my life as I see fit. Its great for school and deciding that the day before a test I dont need to go in. I would say money and freedom pretty much sums it up.

when i was a waitress and just brought out the food in a timely, nearly-silent fashion, i did perfectly all right and got my 15-20% tips. no flirting or looking sexy, just taking the order and bringing the food out and refreshing the drinks. you know, waitress service. this was at restaurants ranging from upscale to just above all night diner.

with waiting tables, flirting occasionally and all that can certainly help increase tips, but it is NOT required. if you bring the food out quickly and keep the drinks full, you will still make money. the flirting is always optional because it's not one's main job in this case.

strippers, stripped of the affection-selling, are not offering anything else. they are convincing men they like them so that the men will hand them money. if we didn't sell intimacy, people would not find the field of sexwork so troubling and would not in fact judge it so harshly. and of course all sexworkers would make much less money than even current levels.

Well, dancing pays more than using my college degree would. A lot more. And I get to sleep in. And there's no dress code, at least at my club. And I can get my nails done however length and colors I want. And I can take a break as often as I want and walk away from rude people after telling them off. In several days I make more than some people do working 40+ hours. And it's fast paced enough for my short attention span. I guess of the top of my head that's why I do it.

I do it because I love to dance and I love strip clubs. The money is second to all of that.

The FREEDOM was always the number one reason for me. No schedule, no one telling me what to do and when to do it. My days are my own and I can do with them what I please. Frankly, some boss telling me I took too long of a lunch or potty break is immensely more degrading than anything outsiders are imagining we go through at the club. It's my life, I'm in control, I work when and for whom I want. There is nobody "over" me and i never have to ask for permission to live my own life as I please.

I do not agree with you on this. I am sure that question has been asked of many people regardless of the gender, but substitute

    lawyer
    pilot
    doctor
    teacher
    truckdriver

into the question and I’ll bet you it has been asked.

    So why the poll then?

There is a lot of discussion on this board about the crap dancers put up with and some dancers who have spoken about how much they hate customers etc. Now granted these are sometimes rants after a really bad day and I have learned to appreciate that. So I wondered do most dancers see this job as such a PITA thatthey do it only for the money, or do they get some enjoyment (and I am not implying sexual) out of it. Do they like the atmosphere, the art of dancing, meeting people, the attention a dancer can get? Or do they come in hating every minute but making enough to make it worthwhile?

With any job there are good and bad points and we would all like to have been given some of Bill Gates $$ and stay home. But at the end of it al,l I would like to think that people get some joy out of their chosen profession.

^Yekky, You're just in L.A. It's the fucking Evil Vortex of Doom. It sux in general, and has always been my absolute least favorite place to dance. I'd work a week in a SoCal club and go home with $20 bucks every night....Then I'd fly to Connecticut the next week and suddenly be making 600 a shift, with what felt like much less effort....

Seriously. Get out while the gittin is good....
