    Default Pets Dreams

I was woke up last night or rather early this morning by a loud whining sound form my one of my dogs . At first I thought maybe he was hurt or something so I got out of bed to take a look . He was in the front room legs thrashing about kind of growling mixed in with the yelps and such .
I decided to wake him up because whatever he was experiencing it didnt look enjoyable , he was kind startled a bit and got rite up onto his feet . He then realized it was me and settled back down to the floor lol . Poor guy I wonder what pets dream about and does anyone else have animals that do this ?

My dog does it all the time. She woofs and makes all kind of noises in her sleep and twitches her feet and she even snores too! She's 12 years old and it seems like as she's gotten older it happens more. I know once I touched her during a dream and she growled at me and got really mad.

^^ I hope they're not having nightmares, but that's what it seems like. When I first got my small dog, I would hear her yelping real lound, like crying screaming. I would run to check on her and she'd be waking up. I think she was just having dreams from adjusting to her new home. who knows

My dog does this a lot too. Animals dream just like people do.

I wonder if animals can sleepwalk?

My cat does this. One time awhile back he was passed out and snoring as usual, when all of a sudden his body jerked. He lurched forward, front paws out like he'd just caught something, and eagerly bit down into - nothing. As he slowly woke up and realized there was nothing there in his paws, he looked quite irritable and gave a big "HMPH!" before going back to sleep.

I always just assumed dogs were chasing cats in their dreams and cats are chasing mice lol.

My horse used to have weird dreams while she was asleep.. my coach always said she figured she was dreaming about doing a jumper course lol.

Human fetuses dream in the womb. All mammals I believe dream. Someone told me they saw her cat trying to hunt while dreaming.

After all the cats I have had in my life I am a firm believer that they do have dreams! Of course they don't remember the dream once they are awake (similiar to me at times) however they do dream! Puddy (my flatmate's cat) snores and at times will "talk in his sleep" Most of the time it is just alot of twitching and breathing differently depending on what they're dreaming about.... granted, I also tend to wake the cat(s) up if they seem to be having a "not so good" dream. They're always a little dopey and not totally "with it" at first when I do that naturally.

my dog seems to be dreaming all the time when she sleeps. her feet twitch and she makes these little whining and half barking noises. if i wake her up she looks around like she doesn't know where she is. and one of my cats will make chirping noises in his sleep. don't know what they're dreaming about though...

same here! Mine sleeps in the bed with me and often falls asleep next to me on the sofa too and constantly snores and dreams. Sometimes I'll be on the phone with my mom and I'll go "hold on" and put the phone by her and she can hear her and laughs. Sometimes she farts in the bed too which is always lovely, especially since she often sleeps near my head.

You shouldn't do that. Disturbing a dream even a bad one is not recommended. Dreaming is how the body and the brain learn. Its purpose is to filter out unneeded memories while committing the day's events that are important for survival and learning into long-term memory (that's one school of thought; another one says that dreaming is the primitive part of the brain taking over because the enlightened part is unconscious during sleep). I tend to side more with the former.

Usually, when humans and animals dream, their eyeballs will tend to flutter underneath the eyelids. This is called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Also they may twitch a little bit. The twitching is strong in the extremities like the legs and also the head.

Yes, all mammals do dream. There's only one mammal which does not dream. Its name is the echidna, it looks like a porcupine.

The reason it's a bad idea to disturb a dream (REM sleep) is that there have been studies that show that if we don't get enough REM sleep we feel very tired even if we sleep for 10 hours, we still feel tired and drowsy. Plus if we are deprived of REM sleep during the night, the next day we can't perform analytical tasks requiring the cognitive powers of the brain. So dreaming is very important and should not be disturbed.

I know I usually act like an idiot on this board. But I know this stuff like very deeply. I'm only posting here just to tell people to please don't disturb your pet's dream if you want it to have a good quality of life. I've seen the results of people and animals who were continously deprived of dreaming, and I can honestly say that it's a form of torture if it's done over and over again.

It's one of the few useful bits my X-wife added to pet care. She called the twitching of the legs "chasing rabbits". I was always more atuned to the phyisiological needs of pets. Now, when I look down on my old man, in his geriatric state, I smile and see him running in fields that are so far beyond his physical capability.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I believe it's the last stage of sleeping (REM). You can't really make yourself get it. Just fall asleep i guess.

I feel the same way about my elderly cat. Whenever the old man twitches or grabs out and bites in his sleep, I think about all the fields and forests he must be running through and all the birds he must be dreaming about catching, birds that he probably caught with little trouble when he was young and svelte. Now he knows he's a fat old man and he can't hunt or fight, but I know he still dreams about it. I'm sort of jealous. Those must be wonderful dreams for him.
