    Default Therapy

Hi. I know this might sound like a dumb question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. How has counseling helped you with personal problems? I'm starting therapy on Saturday. I have major depression and self-esteem issues that pop up every now and then and just won't seem to go away. Luckily, I found a good counselor who charges with a sliding scale.

Yes, it can help. But the old saw, "You have to want to change" is true, too. Plus, if the depression is incapacitating, don't listen to the anti-med zealots. The drugs can get you out of a dark, empty place and give you enough energy to work on changing your behavors and mind. Good luck, Pinup.

Counseling helped me put things into perspective and not blow them out of proportion and to not get hung up on what *could* be instead of what is. I'm glad you found a good one; it can be challenging to find one that you can establish a good rapport with.

I saw a counsellor in college who taught me how to manage panic disorder without a drug dependency. She helped me a lot. I've been thinking lately that I need counselling again, but I can't afford it and I don't know any place that offers it for free now that I'm not in college. I've become way too cynical and jaded lately, to the point that I have lost all my ambition and drive. I want to return to my art and I want to believe in hope again. Wish I could afford a therapist.

If you're seeing a cognitive therapist, it can really help you break out of negative thinking. Therapy really helped me put things in perspective and feel like life was more manageable rather than feeling overwhelmed by little things. I hope you have a good experience as I think it can be incredibly helpful.

Yes it has. I have been through it twice on my own and once with my wife to address some issues we needed help with.

I learned a lot about myself, my reactions and actions and am a much happier and more stable person because of it. It is a lot of work and you have to learn to be honest with yourself and the therapist. Otherwise you are wasting your money and time.

Congratulations on taking the step. When it is done you will be a better person for it.

In terms of meds., I have never understood the anti med school of thought. If you had a bad infection you would take antibiotics to get over it. Why would you not do the same with depression?
