Yay! I'm making the shift from medium chestnut brown to black soon! Why? No one knows. I just hope it looks good.![]()
Also, is it ok to color your hair the night before swimming at the beach?

I wouldnt colour it before going to the beach. My colourist said that you should let the colour set for 24 - 48 hours before washing/getting wet.
Good to know.Loreal's a decent brand, right?
For black I wouldnt do the 'at home' colours. Black is a tricky colour because if it fucks up it takes FOREVER for your colourist to strip it.

Yay for black!! (I'm not biased, really) I agree about not doing it at home. Hello purple skin!

Eep. I've done dark brown at home before but now I'm rethinking my plan to use this tidy little box of color I have sitting here...
Im trying to find a thread on here about a girl dying her hair black at home and it FRIED her hair and took hours to fix the colour mess up. Also someone told me if you go black you should strip other colours first or it will mess up. I dont know I havnt done black. My natural colour is almost black but I always colour it lighter.

I dont think it was Pam maybe I should look at that one though lol. It was another girl who mentioned it in passing in another thread I cant remember who or what though.
At-home black hair dye always looks so inky...I think you should either go to a salon, or get the darkest brown boxed colour possible, and do the underneath half of your hair in black and the top layer in dark brown. That way you'll have some 'depth' to your hair, and it won't look like you just slathered it in L'oreal boxed colour.

Good idea about the black-on-bottom, brown-on-top... I should probably do that to avoid serious ugliness. Luckily the black I got is at least one step above "actual black". Hopefully the bottom layers will look normal.
If you're going for the jet black I have to recomend starry night by Feria, I used it for years and I love it! But if you don't want jet black I do like the idea of doing the darkest brown, that's a great idea. I did notice that when I had been using black for a while it started to look more natural because I was dyeing over and over black which kept the undertone from showing as bad. It looks "inky" when you have blond hair and the blue/purple undertone shows through. If you have med brown to dark hair it's not as bad. And, yeah, it does stain you if you're not careful and you let it drip, LOL!
YAY for black! Love it !!!! But if you are not sure what you are doing , then let a professional do it . Haircolor is one of those things that I personally don't like to risk. Good luck going dark!
USe a dark ash brown...I did that a few months ago, and it did look BLACK, and it didnt look to fakey like most of the usual black dyes
i have to disagree i think black is the easiest color to do at home. just put vasaline around your hairline when you do it, and no dye will stick to your face or neck.

I don't think you should go all black at once. Go for a deep brown interspersed with soft black lowlights. kinda like one typically doesn't go all blonde in one step. Going totally black might be a bit too shocking.
go to the salon. that way if you don't like it. she'll definitely know how to fix it.

As someone who has done colour at home, I would really advise you against it.
Yeah, I have to disagree about black being hard to do at home, too... it always comes out pretty much the same. You buy a box of black hair dye, put it on your head, and your hair will be black.
It's bleaching it back out again that's the bitch...

yeah, i dyed my hair black at home and it was fine. although it was just a demi-permnant dye. it stayed black for a long time still though...Originally Posted by Miss. Kristina Lee
I think the key about dyeing hair black at home is if you are going from hair that's been colored lighter before, or if it's naturally very blonde. I just got mine a very dark brown at the salon and they had to do a brown base coat to cover all my blonde highlights. And it did look better than the time I did it at home. Not sure if it looked $100 better though...
Yeah I would be going from medium chestnut brown to black... I think what I'll do is go through with the dye process, and if it looks crappy I'll have a salon appointment pre-scheduled!I'll let you all know how it goes!
