Angry It's not just strip clubs, it's everywhere!

Well, it's not just strip clubs. Restaurant owners suffer from the same short-sightedness. There is a great Chinese restaurant in my neighborhood and I've been a loyal customer since they opened two years ago. The manager/owner is a total dickhead but the food is good so I put up with it. Lately all these little things have been annoying me... like they started putting bell peppers in the kung pao (WTF?) but ONLY during lunch (HUH?), and other silly nonsense.

So I just called to place my usual delivery order and they told me I had to order more. I thought the minimum for delivery was $10. They said no, they raised it to $15 and they no longer include tax in that. So I got some spring rolls, and she said I'd have to get a beverage or something to get it over the $15 minimum. Whatever, okay. Then she says my total is over $19! WTF? A Diet Coke costs $4? Is this a strip club? She explains that now your order has to be a minimum $15 BEFORE tax, and then they add on a delivery charge.

I'm dying for some tofu, and I can stretch this out to two meals, so I reluctantly agreed. I said, "Well, okay, but this is probably the last time I'm going to order delivery." She got all defensive and snapped, "We're doing BUSINESS now. We had to HIRE PEOPLE." Translation: We got more customers, so we don't need our old customers anymore and fuck you.

I'm tempted to say I'll never go back, but I've said that before over this restaurant's shitty customer service so I might walk down there and get takeout sometime. Or not. There is a closer Chinese place that isn't *as* good but it's still good, and they treat their customers better... I guess I'll start ordering from there instead.

Stupid ass fees. I wonder if the owners of this restaurant also own any strip clubs.

Sounds typical. At least when my favourite Vietnamese restaurant raised prices, they improved the décor significantly. They are still competitive, for Box Hill, and it is so much nicer to eat there now. Box Hill is very very competitive, a Japanese restaurant can't even stay open there due to the much lower prices of everyone else.

I can hit up the SO and her brother for some tofu recipes, if you want. As long as it is not plain, it is good. Can you get tofu locally, and do you know how to tell if it is good or not? You have to be careful if you buy it at a Chinese place here, so I let the SO do it, she is very good with the fruit, vegetables, and tofu.

Sounds like it is time to find a better place. A friend once advised me, good places go bad, bad places get worse, and eventually the bad places go away.

I can deal with prices going up, but not attitude. I wouldn't go there anymore, don't care how good it is.

I can definitely buy tofu; this is Los Angeles. I just suck at cooking it. I'm a good cook, but tofu is difficult, and I can't afford to buy enough to experiment with. For all the ingredients and effort that go into good Chinese dishes, I might as well just get takeout.

Anyway, I'm going to the other place from now on. I hate it because the food really is incredible at this place, but their customer service is just atrocious and it's no longer worth their prices. I was pissed off when the food came - after her whole insistence that they had to add a delivery charge because they had to hire delivery people, it was still the same damn owner/manager who always delivered it before. Granted, they got it here in a red-hot hurry this one time, but I'm no longer willing to pay these stupid prices if they're going to be like that.

I had a spot I loooved and they hiked the prices but started using celery, mushrooms, water chestnuts as filler in their dishes to mask the cut in MEAT! My boyfriend argued that they f-ed up his order and nearly assaulted the manager over it. I used to spend $15-25 every time but they killed it for me. I go to their competitor who gives me free soda and friendly service.

Dammit, I HATE the mushrooms-and-water-chesnuts game. It seems like almost all Chinese places do that if they can. I hate water chesnuts and I hate those little penis mushrooms you find in Americanized Chinese food. Fortunately this place doesn't do that - in fact, I have to beg and pay a dollar extra to get some veggies at all. They will give you just a big double portion of meat and rice unless you ask for vegetables, and they charge more for the veg. Fortunately, it's good veg - fresh broccoli, crunchy fresh carrots, snow peas, even asparagus. One of the things I liked about this place was that they have no freezers and all the food is fresh.

But fuck them. They are no longer worth it. I don't eat in there anymore because the service is awful, and now that they are bleeding the delivery customers this way, fuck 'em. I about kept that restaurant going with me and my friends and I gave them so much advertising, and they know that. Charging me $20 for a single order of tofu and veg with some spring rolls and a Diet Coke is just ridiculous. Next thing they'll be doing like my LAST Chinese place and start charging for rice!

You want to hear the real kicker? Tofu here can be bought for about $0.50c AUD a pack. 2 packs would even fill me up at my hungriest. Just boil in the bag for about 10 seconds, slice it open, add sesame oil, soy sauce and sliced chilies. Alternatively you can sauté it the same way in the frying pan. You can also just sauté it and add some plum or soy sauce. Use Korean soy sauce for less salt, but still good taste.

I have never seen water chestnuts in a restaurant here. Korean family did not even know what they were. Then again I either get my Asian food in Box Hill, North Richmond, or China Town. All three areas have high Asian populations, and many authentic restaurants.

I know a few places that charge for rice, they do not do very well. In Box Hill, that is tantamount to treason. Although, some restaurants here will sometimes charge for tea, if it is of supreme quality, and yes it is usually worth the price.

Tofu's freakin' cheap! Where are you buying your tofu? hit up a Trader Joe's- they sell great tofu. If you go to a Japanese market, tofu can be had for a buck for a pack, or more. Organic tofu at Trader Joe's is 1.19 for a 1lb pack.

Tofu's not difficult to cook. what kind of issues do you have with it?

I know some parts of Sydney are real bad for Chinese food.... think outer burbs. Once had a family from Sydney, and entertained them in Chinatown, they could not eat the food, never had anything like it and they said they liked Chinese food. They meant sweet and sour pork, or honey/lemon chicken.

Yeah I can get the water chestnuts but have started to dislike them. Pity I'm still banned from using Chinese 5 spice in cooking. Koreans just don't like the taste.

Korean BBQ can be good, I know I get too much Korean food these days, but I'll miss it once I'm state side. Brother in Law is a very good Korean Chef. I will not talk about the SOs cooking, for fear of dismemberment. I do most of the cooking here.

I think the nearest Korean restaurant to where we are moving is three and a half hours away. We will have to airfreight kimche form SF.

SO is Korean. I'm about as Aussie as you can get for a Yankie. I am indeed from the far North. I feel a certain kinship with the character Horatio Caine on CSI Miami.

I've lived all up and down East Coast USA, as well as Melbourne and Auckland. Visited Sydney a few times, and Adelaide once.

Yes Soul will knock your socks off for Korean food! My mother-in-law was a Korean chef for 30+ years prior to her private taxi business. Her food rocks. Also just generally better in Korea. It is good if you can have a guide. Korea can be very off putting for westerners. I'll have to post some experiences there on the blue side sometime.

My brother-in-law is cooking Japanese/Korean tonight, Don Katsu. On of my favs, just have to eat in moderation.

Likewise, but I'm also aware that I don't want to fuck around with more than 6 or 7 ingredients and clean up.

Yes I cook you clean is a good deal.... you should help with the big ones though. More than 4 people to cook for can be tough. Best thing would be to plan something you can bake, or have some things prepared beforehand. I once did Japanese steaks for 8.... phew mamma what an experience.

-Yes my cooking is better than most restaurants, hence I hate going to Western restaurants. I'll go Asian or Mexican, because I can usually get something I either can't do, or they just do better.

My brother-in-law makes Korean food look easy, but it is not, and still messier than what I get up to.

I still let the SO buy the tofu, unless your raised on it, it is hard to tell when it is bad. Although I feel safe buying it at a few stores.
