Now I'm free to travel around the globe again. It's been at least 15 years since I've been outside the USA. Considering there are so many delightful SW posters up in Canada, eh, maybe that should be my first trip? (Besides, Canada is close.)

You don't need a passport to get into Canada, though.
Oh, boo. But do you still need one to get back into the USA? I'd hate to take a weekend trip only to find myself an accidental ex-pat living & loving in Toronto.

We just went to Canada a few months ago...all we needed was a drivers license and a birth certificate. Didn't have problems coming back, either.

Canada and Mexico are the same just a DL , but I take mine ( passport) anyways just in case .
for now that's the case, but it's going to be difficult to get into the USA
at the end of this year, you can't enter the US from Mexico or Canada without one if you are coming in by air or sea.
And then then on Jan 1, 2008, for all travel

When I went to Winnipeg a a few years ago all it took to get back into the US was a little bit of ribbing from the border guy. My best friend from high school and I went up there and were going to rival state colleges. Gave us crap about hanging out together and then we drove off. All in all took about a minute tops. (Was the spring break after 9/11) Getting in to Canada took like 45 minutes though. Could have been just because Winnipeg is a popular spring break destination around here that they had alot of college kids going through or something.
If you're going to travel, you otta try Amsterdam! I had a blast there in 2000!
Everything was quite cheap, but now that the Euro is in use I'll bet everything went up in price. Hotels were expensive though, even when priced in Guilden...

GCG,
Actually, ever since I watched Crocodile Dundee as a lad, I have wondered about your continent, mostly for what I hear are its friendly, laid-back inhabitants.
But it is a hell of a long flight, I don't know a soul, and
have no place to stay. [Hint, hint.]

How cool Chicago! Yes definitely take advantage of that passport. exploring other countries is one of the most amazing experiences ever. When you do you will be wondering why you left it so long.
Where have you travelled to outside the US so far?
Seraya.

I hear lots of good things about Cairns, and the many more good things about the Gold Coast.
Well it is currently a chilly 52F in Melbourne.... actually seems a more like 40. Not much precipitation. Roses are still doing well. Further north it is much nicer now. On the Gold Coast it is 72F with showers, I'd think it could be hotter also. It is down right winter in Tasmania, actually about the same as here when I last checked, but they do get snow. I have not seen snow in Melbourne in 12 years.
Melbourne Australia is much more urban than you expect. I still have relatives that don’t understand I’m not in Walkabout Creek.
I'm disappointed I have not see more, and I'm heading back to the US.
I've been around a lot of Victoria (where Melbourne is). We have also visited Echuka, Swan Hill, Hanging Rock, Phillip Island, and more. We circumnavigated Tasmania. Spent about 1 week in Sydney (New South Wales). Been to Adelaide once for 3 weeks not fun, but that was as a 16 year old boy.

Lmfao - oh dear!
Yes Australia is good, and Nz I hear. Sydney is a great city, beautiful with lots to do. Definatly worth the long plane ride! The country varies quite a bit, definatly an interesting place to visit and hop around. (-:

Stick to the South Island, every picture I have ever seen there is beautiful. Auckland could be ok if you got out far enough. Bay of Islands, was nice, but I always had strange expereinces there.
