No, it's not true. Epidurals go into your spine, tattoos are just on the surface of your skin.
Check out my new eBay auctions.......
I have performed spinal taps through tattoos. The needle is much larger than the needle and catheter used with epidurals. Can't imagine any problem a tattoo would cause. I do know that tattoos, especially ones with red pigments can potentially cause problems with MRI.
I can't see the tattoo messing up the epidural, but I could possibly see an epidural messing up your tattoo.
I heard the same thing! It got me scared.
They said that a tattoo on your lower back, can result in NOT having an epidural, because the ink might seek into the spinal cord.
I have no idea on the truth of that, but hopefully it's not true.

More info that might be useful to you.
The problem isn't so much that tattoos can cause problems with epidurals, it's that those who perform them are afraid to be held liable if there is a problem - mainly concern over ink getting into the spinal column.
However, there's no data to justify this and plenty of women have had epidural through their tattoos with no problem.
So, while tattoos may not cuase any physical problems techinically, they could pose a problem in the sense that your provider may not be willing not give you an epidural becuase you have one.
My mom works in labor and delivery and she told me that many patients come in and get epidurals with lower back tats.I would be more worried bout the epidural killing my butterfly.
