Default saw a disturbing post further down....

im not flaming anyone, but the post about job searching really has given me some second thoughts about going to school in the fall. i was planning to start school this fall to get an occupatinal certificate to be an administrative assistant. but when i saw that post about job searching, i think it was phillydancer, i am having second thoughts about even going to school. what should i do? how am i going to be motivated to complete training, if i wont be able to get a job when i finish?
this is actually the reason i got into stripping, because i moved to LA just because of the weather. i grew up in seattle, i moved down here and didnt know anyone. i have been told its not normal to relocate somewhere where you dont know anyone. is that true? the reason i got into stripping is because you can get hired immediately. other jobs take many months to get. so tell me, what motivation do i have to even go to school if i wont get a job when i finish?

That is a legitimate concern of all college students. But as someone with a BA in computer science and dances full time, I think you're doing yourself a great disservice by seeing college as only job training. It's a way to grow in a lot of ways and I wouldn't trade my very expensive education for anything. I use it every day (ironically more now than I did when I was in that field.) In retrospect, I'm glad I graduated college before I started dancing. It kept me focused.

It also depends on what field you want to go in. Some fields are easier to find work in than others, obviously. Maybe you want to go to grad school?

As for that comment of moving to a place just because you like the weather.....I'm sure it's very common. Why else would people live in southern CA?

there are lots of places with sunshine, or not as much rain, that arent so heavily populated. maybe its all those illegals coming across the border, but Texas doesnt seem to have that problem. Is Houston newar the Mexican border?

It depends on your field and where you live. And Emily's right, school has benefits beyond simple job training. It's good for you and will help you grow as a person.

    Keep a stiff upper lip!

Many people move to strange and exciting places where they don't know anyone, maybe it is because of family, maybe because of a wandering spirit, maybe even just for the weather.

The thing about life is that it is never easy. Some days I strugle to get up and keep fighting, but I find a way.

Yes finding a job after college is hard work, hell finding a good job is even harder, but I've seen that anything worth having takes effort and hard work to obtain. I write from time to time, and it is hard work, but I love it so much I do not care how hard it is.

Some of the best days I've had have been full of hard work. I had two very well paying jobs, one where I was constantly put down, annother where I was needed and my skills were highly valued. The hardest day at the second job mentioned, was still better than the best day at the first one.

I'm going to repeat some of my post in the other article now. The books can be helpful, if you implement them. Sometimes you have to adapt them to your situation, but they are good.

Two books that I have excerpts from but have yet to actually find:

Guerrilla Tactics in the Job Market
    Tom Jackson

College Grad Job Hunter: Insider Techniques and Tactics for Finding a Top-Paying Entry Level Job
Brian D. Krueger –This one seems to be in a similar vein to Guerrilla Tactics.

I know what you mean about it not being normal to be moving around, sort of...

Most of the people I knew in graduate school had moved from far away -- they were going there for the education quality rather than location. But it's true that most of the people I've met who didn't go to graduate school are within a 100 miles or so of where they were born. Even a lot of graduate students stay within the same state. I've moved all over the place for career, and it's always starting over knowing nobody, which has, I'm sure, taken it's toll on my sanity, but yet I've also lived in a lot of different types of cultures, with different types of outlooks, which has given me a pretty wide perspective on the world. In my field, I always knew I could find a job, just never knew if I could find a job I liked, where I liked, with the pay I wanted, etc., etc.

That's totally subjective. If it's normal for YOU, then YES it's normal. It is not normal for everyone, but there is no one set of "normals" that fit for everyone.

As for the rest of your post, the job market is different in every city. You basically HAVE to have some type of education beyond high school (or loads of experience) these days to get any job that pays anything close to decent. If you don't have much experience, you will need an education. I would recommend going for that certificate if that's what you want to do, and in the meantime, get some temp jobs and/or work through the school to get some experience. But no matter what, you can't expect to get a great job if you don't earn it, which means you'll have to start at the bottom and get the proper training and background experience.

I don't know the thread you're referring to, so I'm just answering the question you asked based on what you posted. Everyone's job search experience will be different, with MANY factors that come into play.

are you from seattle? originally? dont you hate the rain? to the point where it makes you so mad? do you know what the job market in LA is like for administrative jobs? you are basically saying that you cant get a decent job without skills, and that is what you go to school for. If you have experience, then you must have the skills, right? isnt that what it comes down to?

I'm not from Seattle, just moved here a couple weeks ago. I don't KNOW what the LA admin job market is like, but I reckon it's pretty tough, like everything in LA. The point was, you shouldn't NOT go to school because someone else in another city finds it difficult to get a job after school, in another field even. Without education you will find it even HARDER to find a decent job. You have to pay the dues by working through education and struggling through shit jobs for a while to gain experience to get the good jobs. That's really the bottom line. It really doesn't work any other way, unless of course you're born into a family business or some such.

But admin jobs are relatively easy to get, in comparison to other fields. You can start by going to temp agencies and going out on whatever assignments you can get. You work hard, take whatever computer training they offer, and before you know it, they'll be calling you for better assignments and then even long term or permanent positions. If you pick things up quickly, show up to work on time and do a good job, it won't take long to start getting the better offers with the agencies. You could try that route instead of or while going for your certification. But considering the current market, I'd advise going for your certification and temping for experience to qualify for better paying jobs. Companies ALWAYS take notice of applicants who have some training beyond high school before those who don't.

Another thing is to read up on good resume writing. Get a library card, get magazines, read online, etc. A nicely formatted and well-written resume will go a LONG way to getting you a job. It is, after all, the very first impression you give to a potential employer. Read other people's posted resumes for your field, read job postings, learn the keywords employers look for and use them in your resume. Use as many buzzwords as apply to you and your skills. God, I think I should start a resume-writing and interview training service. LOL

Getting more educated is NEVER bad. Just make sure that the education you get is a GOOD one, not a diploma mill education.

I'm from New Orleans originally but been all over.

I know admin jobs require skill - I have done it lots. This is why you should get your certification: they will TEACH you the skills in your classes. Temp agencies will also offer training if you register with them. You can take their computer skill tests over and over for free until you score well and they will use your highest scores to place you in jobs.

Only way to improve your situation is to get off your ass and get busy learning. If you have Microsoft Office on your home computer, open up the programs and use them. Register with some temp agencies (all the major ones offer some type of computer training) and take their tests - then ask about any available training or practice sessions. After taking some computer tests at some agencies, practice at home if you have the software. The agencies want to have as many qualified people in their employee pools as possible, so they will do alot to help you learn if you are willing to work at it.

The only way anyone acquires these skills is through training (school) and working shit clerical jobs to get the practice.

Typing speed is the EASIEST thing to get. Just practice typing. You can post here often to help with that But any typing will help improve your speed.

Go for your certification - you will probably qualify for finacial aid so when you apply at a school ask them about it. They will be glad to help.

And as for learning computers, those 'For Dummies' books are priceless. Believe me, they won't make you an expert, but lots of Ph.D.'s use them to get started, since the other 'Teach Yourself' books still tend to be full of lots of confusing jargon.

I was born in the North East USA. I've lived in CT, TN, GA, NC, FLA multiple places. I've also Lived in Melbourne Australia, and Auckland New Zealand. I've moved 30 times if I've moved 1. Sometimes you want to get a better job, you just have to move.

I will strongly agree with Widget here, for Dummies books will get you up and running faster than just about anything else. There are some people that get more out of a course, but for Dummies works. By background I work with computers. I'd done a lot of different things, but making computers work for you has always been a big goal. I don't work for my computer. I aced my university first level database course using the Access for Dummies book.

Now if you don't mind some levity I'll dispense with it anyway.

Yep, go to college. My biggest regret is not following through on anything I learned there. Or finishing a degree, heh.

You don't want to be stuck in the service industry slot all your life. It's rough going, especially now.

School is pricey these days, but the right 2 year program can land you a comfortable living wage-type job.

I moved from a town of 2800 people to Los Angeles in 1988 at the age of 17.... I knew NOBODY. However, I met many people, whom I am still friends with today. I do not regret moving to a place where I knew no one, I started stripping in LA in late 1988, at the height of the strip club/ 80's rock genre movement... it put me through college, and some of the girls I worked with who were in their mid to late 20's then were like sisters and mother figures to me, whom I still confide in and admire to this day... And, it wasnt' easy either, however, if you are a strong person, and you are able to survive with what you have and have a positive attitude, you can accomplish just about anything.
And, I'm a pro-advocate on higher education.. get that degree.. it will be the best investment you'll ever make... spend only what you need, save the rest and get educated.

Oh my god sweetheart, GO TO SCHOOL! You are not always going to be able to make money off your looks! If you make a career of stripping, awesome, more power to you, but what are you going to do with no education and no practical work experience when things are no longer pointing up? If you are dancing and not going to school or investing your money somehow (through financial investments or being an entrepeneur), you are wasting your future.
