    Thumbs up Hustle & Flow

I am listening to the soundtrack to the excellent movie Hustle & Flow...

And man, there is NOTHING like "Whoop That Trick" when you're in a bad mood. Crank that shit up and engage! I feel better already. Anyway.

In the movie, the main character, D-Jay, is a pimp with two girls (actually three, but one is pregnant and not working). One of them also works at a strip club, and the club in the movie (King of Clubs) is an actual skanky extras club in Memphis. The girl in the movie is definitely pulling extras and there's one line that bothers me. D-Jay goes in to talk to her and she goes off on him after he interrupts her with a customer: "I WAS on my third dance... n*gga, I ain't even made payout yet!"

This clip is included at the beginning of "Whoop That Trick" on the CD and it always bugs me. Are payouts really that high in Memphis? Seems to me that if you're doing extras and you still haven't made payout after three dances, then the payout is too damn high. Is this an error in the script, or are payouts really that high there?

That club seemed really trashy. I don't know about tipouts in Memphis, though.

Ha... yeah, the club stood in for itself and except for the one actress, all the other girls in the scene were girls that actually danced there. I haven't been in there but I hear it's just like that in real life.

I just can't imagine not having pay out after doing three dances with extras.

I thought that movie kind of sucked. It was too long and that pimp character was completely unsympathetic.

Something for everyone, I guess. I liked it, but it did cure me of any lingering desires to move back home. I left Memphis for a reason - so I wouldn't wind up trapped and desperate there like D-Jay and his girls.

I personally luved it 2 death and even more so the soundtrack. The auctual characters were kind of pathetic and I didnt like them as people. Especially the part when he throws the stripper out of the house then sets the baby outside the doorstep. Ya think that he would have had some concern bout the baby being on the street.

Well, way back in the 90s when I briefly worked at PP in Memphis the tipout was $50 I think plus a DJ tip . . . so yeah maybe 2 dances @ $20 apiece (and it looked like she was doing $20 table dances rather than $40 couch dances or whatever they are there) isn't payout yet.

Damn. That tipout is way too damn high.

And taintedlove, that was the whole point of that scene... that he CAN'T care about the baby. The other women did, but they were powerless. I saw that scene as a reminder that people in such dire financial straits are more like lions or other predators; you have to take care of your own business and the male must maintain his authority above all else. It was heartbreaking but it was honest. That's exactly what would've happened.

The problem is that as a pimp, you're exploiting people, and NOT taking care of your own business.

It's the "all about me" thing- as long as I gots mine, fuck you type of attitude.

I have a hard time with that movie because I worked with troubled teens, of which many were connvied into prostitutiton by street pimps. I have no love, respect or the desire to see them glamourized in any way.

I don't think it DID glamorize it. Of course it was the movie version, but I think the girls were very well-rounded characters and it was perfectly apparent what D-Jay was doing.
