Default Nice, fancypants restaurant in San Francisco?

I need a recommendation for a nice restaurant to take my auntie and her girlfriend to in San Francisco. We're not going until November, but they're pretty much paying for my trip, so I've got to take them somewhere niiiiiiiice, and would like to make sure I can get a reservation.

    Ideas?

Literally hundreds and hundreds of great restaurant. You'd have to really dig hard to end up at a bad place.

    What kind of cuisine?

Well, is there any kind of 'local' cuisine? A place with a history, maybe. And a nice view.

They're kiwi, so they eat fish a lot already. NZ is full of asian fusion, so that won't impress them. Somewhere with a good selection of local wines.

I found this website before the last time I spent a day in San Francisco, but didn't use it due to spending over half the day having a second childhood at the Exploratorium. These are the opinions of one guy who lives there(and I guess I'd be careful considering one of his choices for the 15 most underrated & overlooked restaurants in San Francisco is Burger King!), but nvertheless I've saved his info for whenever I have a chance to go there again

Local wines are everywhere in San Francisco; you're less than an hour away from Sonoma County and the Napa Valley, which is North America's premier wine region. There is all KINDS of excellent food in San Francisco. It might be a little trite, but personally I like the Stinking Rose due to my obsession with garlic - everything on the menu is chock-full of garlic, yums.

You can get really good Chinese in Chinatown but it's not fancy... there are some great Italian places in Little Italy, but stay away from that joint that's owned by the Coppolas because the food is mediocre and they only have those shitty Coppola wines. On the pier there are some pretty pricey seafood places, but if they're from New Zealand they probably won't be impressed by the seafood.

Actually, if you'll have a car with you or don't mind a trip on the BART, I would think you'd do better in Sausalito. It's a really hoity-toity suburb just on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, so you can enjoy the THRILL that is crossing that bridge (try not to do it in rush hour... <shudder>) and head up to the next exit for much nicer, less touristy but still glorious times. There are a lot of really amazing fine restaurants in Sausalito, and some of them overlook the bay and the bridge. It's nice.

There's a restaurant at the top of the Bank of America building for views--don't remember the name. Gary Danko is considered one of the top restaurants in the city (down by Fisherman's Wharf). If you don't mind a drive, there's French Laundry up in Marin.

Those are some of the verrry fancy places in the city (dunno about the one at the top of the BoA building, actually)...
