Default ugh, i feel so bad.

So my cat caught his first bird, and it was a full grown one. No clue how he pulled that one off, but he left it alive in my basement. It had a lot of bleeding on its side, it's foot was half gone, but it was still aware and awake, afraid of me of course. I kept it warm and in place with a towel while I called around, all vets and wildlife centers were closed in my area, and I didn't think it would make the night, and it had to be have been in a lot of pain.

So basicly, I had to put it down as I didn't want to just let it suffer or put it outside to die slowly. I wrapped it up tight, and put the towel over his face tight, and he died in about 1 a minute without much struggle. I really feel bad, but I couldn't let it suffer, and I still feel bad. What would you guys have done?

Death is a part of life. Learn to accept this.

Feel good about yourself that you respect life so much.

It is a shame your cat was never taught how to kill quickly as cats learn in the wild. Sometimes it seems in our acts to be so much more civilized and kind, we end up dragging out the pain.

Definitely the right thing to do. I live in Oklahoma - it's a fact of life. If you see a crippled deer, or a squirrel that's been hit and not dead, whatever, you have to kill it - it's the most humane thing to do.

I agree with my cat not killing them quickly. I invested in a cat "bib" to go along with his bells. Seems as though it will work well. http://www.catgoods.com/testimonials5.html

It's a hard thing to do, my cat (when I was a kid) caught a rabbit and did not kill it. She had it on our back deck and when I opened the door to see what was going on the rabbit got away and jumped down the steps to the basement. I was 14 or 15 home alone and did not know what to do so I let the cat in to see if she would finish it off but It was freaking me out because the rabbit was putting up a fight so I grabbed a baseball bat and killed it. It messed with me for a while but I got over it. It was the rabbit going nuts and maybe hurting my cat or kill the rabbit. I did what I had to do. She got it and took it out to her kittens. She was one hell of a mouser but this rabbit was a big one and she bit off more than she could chew.

I remember most of my hunter cats (not all liked it) would find ways out of collars and such. Yes it is more humaine ending its life, than making it die slowly.

House cats remember the desire to hunt, but do not understand the necissity of a quick kill and eating its prey. One of those things we live with.

I think my gray cat would catch a mouse once a year, play with it, rarely ever injure it, and end up getting bored and letting it go.

I've used wooden boards to snap the necks of crippled birds that were hobbling around on the ground. It's the most humane thing to do. I hope that someone does the same to me if I'm ever broken beyond repair. Fuck all the pro-Terri Schiavo pro-lifers.

I thought about snapping its neck, but I didn't think I could do it. Suffocation seemed like the easiest way. Hopefull the bird didn't know what was going on.

Big Daddy, your cat could have easily killed that rabbit, no matter how large it was. Rabbits are prey. Cats, even small ones, are natural born killing machines!

A 70 pound cat (lean weight, if one existed) could kill a human without any diffculty at all.

That rabbit posed absolutely no danger to your cat, regardless of what you think.

Well, it did. The cat could have gotten scratched or bitten badly.

I had to do that once. We were hiking in Hawaii and some asshole before us had partially brained a rat. It was lying there just off the trail with this awful head wound, suffering major seizures, shaking and jerking as it lay there in its blood. My ex (we were on our honeymoon at the time) told me just to leave it, but I couldn't; it seemed like the humane thing to do would be to put it out of its misery. So I found a huge stick and finished the job. I was really upset about it. I mean yeah, it's a rat, but it probably wasn't hurting anybody.

Ah - I have never thought about that. Hypothermia is a good way to go.

I almost drowned once - I can say while it is scary to look at - it is actually kinda peaceful down there. (Needless to say I am a much better swimmer these days!)

I can understand you feeling bad, but you did the right thing. You have a good heart. I'm sure the bird was grateful to be out of it's misery.

I had a friend who had a pet snake as a child, and he used to use that way. Sometimes it would take up to 3 hours for them to die. I assume it's painless though.

defnitely the right thing to do.

i had to kill a baby mouse once. one of my cats caught it and was playing (ie: torturing) it. he was injured and too young to survive on his own so i shooed my cat away and put the mouse out of his misery.

i've worked in several vet clinics and have seen many animal euthanized, from cats to horses (the horses are a bit traumatic at first...) but that was the first time i actually had to do it myself. it is a hard thing to do, but if an animal is suffering and has little/no chance of recovery a quick death is the best option.

Aw, I've had to do the same too. "Feeling bad" is what separates us from animals.

For very small animals that need a "putting down," a Mason jar sealed shut is a easy way to do it. Otherwise, go get the .22 & go behind the barn.

That was so brave of you! When I was little I would find birds that neighbor's cats had mauled and try to save them. Thinking back on that, I feel horrible! You did the right thing.

This is why I don't have a cat. I don't want to deal with this stuff.
