I had the surgery on each of my big toes. Think it's probably getting close to 10 years ago by now. I've never had an ingrown nail since then. I think it took 1 shot of novacane (sp?) on each side of the toe when I had it done. When I had it done the doctor basically cut away the skin over the side of the toe nail and basically just clipped the nail. When I had it done he used some acid (don't remember the name at all) that stunted the growth. Was actually kinda interesting to watch but I'm sure they will put a barrier up if you want. Think it was basically just stay off it as much as you could for a couple of days to let it heal and think shoes were a no no.
I'd recommend it for sure. I'd say it was well worth the time to not have worry about it after its done.
And rereading have you only had it twice in the last 5 years or so, or do you get them more frequently then that. I would get the every couple of months was why I had it done. Not really sure that I'd recommend it if is that infrequent.
