They numb the entire toe..takes about 6 lil' pricks of a needle... Then they cut it out and typically laser that side so that the nail never grows back that way.

It aches and throbs for about a day after but noting that a lil' pain medication can't handle. its better then letting it get infected.

I had the surgery on each of my big toes. Think it's probably getting close to 10 years ago by now. I've never had an ingrown nail since then. I think it took 1 shot of novacane (sp?) on each side of the toe when I had it done. When I had it done the doctor basically cut away the skin over the side of the toe nail and basically just clipped the nail. When I had it done he used some acid (don't remember the name at all) that stunted the growth. Was actually kinda interesting to watch but I'm sure they will put a barrier up if you want. Think it was basically just stay off it as much as you could for a couple of days to let it heal and think shoes were a no no.

I'd recommend it for sure. I'd say it was well worth the time to not have worry about it after its done.

And rereading have you only had it twice in the last 5 years or so, or do you get them more frequently then that. I would get the every couple of months was why I had it done. Not really sure that I'd recommend it if is that infrequent.

i had a problem with my big toe a few years ago. the dr. thought it was an ingrown toenail, but it turned out to be a bone spur. she had to cut all the way down to the bone and clip the spur off.

the worst part was a novacaine shots in the foot. i won't lie; those are a bit painful. but that was the worst of it. the actual surgery didn't hurt at all and the recovery wasn't bad. the bone spur itself had been causing me quite a bit of discomfort, so it was relief to have it gone.

go get the toenail taken care of; it won't be bad and you'll feel so much better once it's done

I deal with this every week since I have wide width feet & the big toes get "funkified." I clip out the corners, pick the cuticle with tweezers & alcohol, wear sandals in hot weather, and soak in epsom salts or even a mild bleach solution as needed. Once you grow in big-toenails, file them down, don't clip anymore.
This probably won't make you feel better, but there's a video clip of someone removing a rotten toenail with pliers on

The doc told me to cut a small "V" in the middle of the nail that was giving me problems. Said that allows the nail to grow in towards the part that is cut out instead of growing to the sides. Don't take out a huge chunk or anything just a small "V" should help a bit.

the process doesn't hurt at all..I got two shots in my foot (and he rubbed a numbing cream on it first, so I didnt even feel those)...and during the whole process, I felt NOTHING...not even any discomfort or odd feelings. I know for some people, watching is the worst part, but many doctors have screens or soemthing to put between you and what he's doing, so you dont even have that.
