That is a good question.
Where does the pay end up? In a US bank or an Australian bank?
Basically I am saying Australia can talk shit all they want - but if the money is going into an American bank - fuck em cuz they can't touch it (at least easily.)
I ran this past my mum who used to work in Centrelink. She ouldnt answer but said that if you did the above and worked for an American company with the money going to an American bank account you would probably bypass the Australian Tax system, but on the other hand that could effect your ability to stay here.
She suggested looking on the Department Of Immagration website. She said from all her years of working in Goverment departments she cant stress enough how important it is to get advice and information from the CORRECT DEPARTMENT! In the long run this will save you alot of bother! Good luck (-:
This would be a good question for DIMIA. They really are helpful there.
Yes, definitely ask. I know that for Americans who work and make money outside of the actual US of A, they are still required to report and file any and all money earned. So, I BELIEVE that if you are an American citizen living in another country and being paid by an AMERICAN company, you would have to report and pay all applicable taxes to the US. If you are working for a company in another country and are NOT living in the US or it's territories, then you would STILL have to pay taxes to the US, but you would also have to report/pay taxes to the country in which you are earning money/living. But, the lines get all muddled in there, so I would definitely find out for sure well in advance of having to actually pay the taxes..
Oh, and when you find out...could you post that here?

this is going to be really muddy. If you are a US citizen officially residing outside of the USA, then generally the first $100k of foreign income is exempt from US taxes. It remains to be seen whether or not paychecks issued by a US corporation to a US bank account held by a US citizen will be considered foreign income (I bet not but can't say with any authority). But if you are officially residing in Australia, you may be subject to Australian tax on foreign earnings you 'repatriate' to Australia. If so, then you can probably file for a US tax credit for Australian taxes paid on the 'repatriated' income, or vice versa, depending on where your official international residency actually lies.

My question isn't reffering to taxes but my legality to work. I'm fully willing to pay both taxes BUT if I'm not legally allowed to work in Australia - but work online for an American company... is it still illegal? o.O;
I thought you'd have a good answer Melonie, I was waiting for yours. Since it doesn't seem you're sure (damn!) I'll call DIMIA myself and post an update.

^^^ my gut feeling is that if you are working online for an American company, and if the paychecks are deposited in an American bank, there is no way the Aussies can consider this to be 'working illegally' in their country. The whole principle of 'working illegally' revolves around resident non-citizens taking jobs away from citizens - which dancing in an Aussie club would clearly do, but online work for a US website would not.
