    How Much Is Too Much

Okay, I'm considering buying another pet. I live alone in a one bedroom apartment. The complex allows cats. I have a ferret. She takes a good amount of time... But I've always wanted one of those bald cats... The egyptian ones. You know what I mean? I wouldn't want to let the cat outside... seeing as there are lots of predators around where I live and someone might steal it because they are kind of expensive. I'd want to get one from the shelter if I could just cuz it's expensive otherwise and I'd feel better about it. I'm a full-time student. Do you guys think I should just wait? I've never had a cat before, but I heard they were easy to take care of.

I don't see any reason why not. I am convinced that strippers all have some sort of pet, be it furry or human. Youc an afford it, you have the time and you will give it lots of love. That's the perfect situation!

As someone with ferrets, I know where you are coming from. They are fun and all, but they don't sleep in bed with you and they aren't excited to see you when you come home. I refer to msyself as "the lady that fills the food bowl" with them

I would be afraid of the cat killing the ferret. And you'd be pretty lucky to find an expensive exotic breed of cat at the shelter. Usually the people who buy specialty breeds know what they're getting into from the get-go, and don't give them up. Specialty breeds also have special needs.

I've never had one of these cats - I've only actually seen and touched one like 3 times, so take it for what it is worth. Hairless cats (Sphinx) are actually Canadian (they used to be called Canadian Hairless), and in some areas there is a waiting list of up to 2 years (as there is no guarantee that each litter will contain hairless cats). You are unlikely (profoundly) to find one in a shelter because they are very, very expensive, highly bred animals. You can't let them outside, summer or winter because they are prone to disease, sun burn and of course, cold. Around here, if I remember correctly, they are between $800 and $1200. Generally you agree when you buy the animal to have it neutered and to surrender it back to the cattery if you give it up, so there aren't a bunch of them wandering around homeless and in need.
You might also consider a Cornish or Devon Rex - they are short, curly haired non-shedding cats, very popular with the hypoallergenic crowd. But same things apply - they have to stay indoors, etc., etc. Cats are not hard to take care of, but they do require a certain amount of routine. You need to be home everyday, for a certain amount of time to talk to it and play with it, and you can't take it with you places as easily as you could a dog. I have heard that the Sphinxes are very trainable and affectionate. Let me know - I've always been interested in them too.

I don't think the cat would hurt a ferret unless it was just a mean cat (like the type that would try to attack another cat or dog.) I know a lady with 9 cats and 42 ferrets (yeah, I know) and either the cats like the ferrets, are afraid of them, don't care, or just sit there and stalk them and then try to bat them with their paw. I had a roommate with a cat and he would just stare at mine all day and sometimes try to sneak some of their food.

Ferrets are tough and even my jack russell terrier won't mess with them. It was the funniest thing when all my ferrets surrounded him and he just laid on his back. But even then, I don't let them mingle unsupervised.

Joe's cousin has 2 cats and a ferret...and they are the best buddies. The ferret won't sleep in her bed, but he will snuggle up with the cats for a nice nap. They play all the time and while it looks really rough, none of them ever came out with a scratch. But, I guess it does depend on the cat. If you got an older cat who lived a lot outside, it may not be a good idea to put the ferret and cat together...but if you get a kitten...that would probably be fine.

Haha! Awww! Keep it coming with the stories!

Yea... my bf was trying to tell me I could get one for $80. I started laughing! I wish! I looked up info on the Cornish Rex. They seem to have similar personalities to the... sphinx? Hopefully they're cheaper? My mom's SERIOUSLY allergic to cats... Another reason I wanted the hairless kind... I think it might hurt her feelings otherwise, you know?

Cats are great. I have 2, and love them very much. They do run up to greet me when I get home (they can hear the garage door opener), but I've kind of trained them to do that. I have a bag of cat treats next to the door, and I throw them a couple of treats everytime I get home.

Also if you have a little "dinner time" song you sing at them, they will come to you when you call. They recognize your pitch and tone, not the words you are saying. If sing to them every time you feed them, they will develop a mental link to the song, and come running if they are in ear shot. Same with the can opener.

My ferret's actually a doll. If I click my tounge, she'll come running (because she wants a treat) and when she's out of her cage, she'll follow me around the house. But, if I don't pay attention to her back, she'll start attacking my feet. It's really annoying. I want something to just laze around the house with me and that's low-maintenance

BTW, you can train cats. You can train them to walk on a lead so that when you want to give them some outdoor time (you will need to do this as it is unhealthy for a cat to stay indoors all the time... some of them will get bored) they will walk on the lead without fuss. You can train them to use the human toilet as their toilet and thus reducing your need for kitty litter (oh how I wish I had done this with mine!!!). You can train your cat to do tricks and various other behaviours...........................only if you get them when they are young.

The "shelter cats" are rather inexpensive and usually moggy breads which means they are generally speaking a hardier/sturdier bread than a pure-bred cat. I actually prefer moggy cats and females at that. Male cats (the ones I've been exposed to) can be too territorial, domineering etc with other cats etc. Females cats are the best (for me.. my preferance).

Cats are low maintenance compared to a dog however it doesn't mean they require no maintenance! You still need to feed them, water them and give them love/affection/attention.

and please please please DE SEX YOUR CAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
