Drink some protein shakes. You cannot build muscle if you are not eating enough protein.

There are all kinds of different supplements. Some have whey/lactose, others do not. Read the contents on the back and it will state exactly what is found in the product.

Juice fast? If you are concerned about losing muscle than you are going about things the wrong way. To lose weight you need to focus on morning cardio first thing when you wake up. Drink a single serving of plain whey protein in water to preserve muscle as you are already in a catabolic state after sleeping for 7-9 hours. Do that for 40minutes keeping your heart range in the 70 range. Higher is doing nothing more than burning muscle for fuel and lower is not efficient at all. Do this 5 days a week.

Stay away from fasts or fad diets. For every lb lost dieting 60% is muscle, 40% is fat. Build more lean tissue (muscle mass) by doing plenty of free weight movements such as squats (no smith bullshit), bench press, bent over barbell row, standing press, deadlifts, etc. Work on adding weight to the bar (even a 2.5lb plate is progress) or more reps in good form each week.

The more lean tissue you have, the more fat you burn 24 hours a day. Eat small, complete meals every 3 hours. A good example for breakfast (after the morning cardio) would be 2 eggs whites with one whole egg, one piece of whole grain bread OR a small bowl of slow cooked oats and a piece of fresh fruit. Don't avoid carbs but don't go overboard on bulky grains as it can upset your crohns.

It's better to eat many small meals through out the day rather than 2-3 big ones. When our bodies are not given the proper nutrients through out the day or worse yet when someone fasts or does fad diets, the metabolism slows down. It does this to protect the body. During this no fat is burned as it the body is saving it. It eats lean muscle instead. Then when you eat normal again any weight lost is put right back on. Although this time it is mostly fat that is put back on.

I would recommend a book call The Truth by Frank Sepe. It has some decent no nonsense basic advice that is at least better than the bs found in mags lik oxygen.

Keep in mind that while in a fat burning phase, you cannot build muscle. Even with such drastic measures as hgh, igf1 or anabolics it isn't possible. The body doesn't like to do two drastic things at once. However the high protein diet is a very good idea to preserve your muscle while stripping off bodyfat.

One more thing, don't become a slave to the scale. The scale means nothing. Nobody looks at someone and weighs them before deciding if they look good or not. Go by what you see in the mirror. And remember fat loss is a long term goal. There are no shortcuts. Good luck.

Ps. The smaller, frequent, balanced meals will really help with the crohns. I myself have had to deal with it. Those juice things work or seem to work short term but in the end not the best idea. It's like putting a bandaid on a leaky pipe.

I know pretty much FA about protein powders and such, but I think you can get a brown rice protein powder cos I've seen it advertised for vegans and people with allergies.

I am not trying to loose weight here.. the fast is to control my condition which I have had 5years.

I am simply wanting to retain muscle whilst fasting for the next 12-20 todays longer. I will give the protein shakes a try

    Thanks for all the advice

She's not trying to lose weight. She's trying to (trying to think of a word here) control her Krohns. It's a disease.

To either build muscle or retain muscle- heavy weights. Heavy meaning you could lift that weight for no more than 8 repetitions. Compound movements, squats, bench pressing, rows, shoulder presses.
Cardio should not be the focus while trying to hold onto muscle, by all means do it for cardiovascular fitness if you wish. How long/often do you have to fast to keep your condition at bay, and do you have energy to work out?
How does protein figure into your fast? Im guessing that would 'break' the fast to ingest protein powders?

I have the energy to work out at the moment, am doing 30minutes weights each night plus walking to work daytimes and jogging.. pretty high energy atm.

Am thinking of introducing some small peices of soft vegetable in about ten days and seeing how it goes.

Will try using some heavier weights, at the moment am using 2kg and 5kg which seems to be doing the trick..

14 days of juice, you will lose a lot of muscle. Resistance training will help, but wont counter a juice diet for two entire weeks. Some drugs would help, but you probably don't have access or interest in that. As for treatments, I would follow the Life Extension Foundation's protocol:

The 4-R Program for Crohn’s Disease

The following steps are recommended to help patients with Crohn's disease first reduce their symptoms and then begin long-term repair of the damage caused by their disease:

    * Remove. Remove all suspicious foods from the patient's diet that precipitate inflammation. The following are the most likely to be troublesome: dairy, eggs, nuts, fruit, tomatoes, corn, wheat (or gluten), and red meat. All refined carbohydrates should be removed. All fats except for essential fatty acids should be eliminated, because hard or trans fats are detrimental to people with Crohn's disease (Heckers H et al 1988; Lorenz-Meyer H et al 1996). Products such as Vivonex®, UltraMaintain®, or UltraClear® can be used at the outset. UltraClear® is preferable because it contains sufficient fiber to maintain regular bowel evacuation. Removal of gastrointestinal parasites, undesirable bacteria, or fungal elements is important.
    * Replace. The diets of most patients who have inflammatory bowel disease are nutritionally imbalanced. Replacement of vital nutrients consists of a good multivitamin, together with minerals that are lacking. The vitamins that most patients with inflammatory bowel disease lack are the B-complex vitamins such as folic acid and vitamin B6, and particularly vitamin B12 (Rogler G et al 2004). Iron and calcium deficiencies are frequently found in patients with Crohn's disease (Capurso G et al 2002; Lomer MC et al 2004; Siffledeen JS et al 2003), as well as deficiencies in zinc, protein, vitamin D, and folic acid (Rath HC et al 1998; Siffledeen JS et al 2003). Patients with Crohn’s disease are usually under increased oxidative stress and have lower levels of antioxidant vitamins. Supplementation with vitamins C and E reduces oxidative stress (Aghdassi E et al 2003). Long-term use of corticosteroids warrants the inclusion of supplemental calcium and vitamin D to prevent corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis.
    * Reinoculate. A normal healthy intestine contains 5 to 7 pounds of friendly bacteria, the good bacteria that are responsible for manufacturing some vitamins and cell food in the intestine. In a diseased intestine, these bacteria are not present in adequate amounts or are absent, having been replaced by pathogenic organisms or yeast overgrowth. Reinoculation consists of taking mixtures of the friendly bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus along with fructose oligosaccharides to promote continued repopulation with these beneficial bacteria (Fedorak RN et al 2004). Inhibition of pathogens by lactobacilli follows the lowering of pH through liberation of acids, resulting in an antimicrobial action. Stool samples provide information regarding these overgrowth factors, pH, and the balance of fatty acids.
    * Repair. Frequently the lining of the small intestine becomes permeable, allowing antigens and other incompletely digested products to pass through the bowel wall. Repair of the protective layer consists of adding nutrients such as pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), zinc (Cario E et al 2000; Kapp A et al 1991; Weimann BI et al 1999), fructose oligosaccharides, and vitamin C to build up the integrity of the intestinal wall itself.

In a study of patients who had Crohn’s disease with “leaky gut” (increased intestinal permeability as measured by a lactose/mannitol challenge), patients who did not have their small bowel mucosal integrity restored (those who still had a leaky gut), relapsed within 1 year (76 percent to 81 percent of the patients). Patients with normal intestinal mucosal integrity and healing had less than a 5 percent probability of relapse (Wyatt J et al 1993).

Thanks for the information Will, appriciate the time spent

I have read a whole lot of these regimes and things for crohns and to be honest they either want you to eat a whole lot of crap.. ie the low residue things(mm refined carbs n no roughage..id end up in hospital) or introduce foods which would cause me massive bleeding.

I have probiotics daily these really do seem to make a big difference .. however after 5yrs of this condition are so many foods I cannot tolerate I have had to get to this extreme.. I see it as the lesser of two evils.. lol

At the moment the working out seems to be keeping some tone, I know I will loose some muscle is unavoidable!

Thanks for the msg n links hun

Hi = i have had crohns for 8 years now (well thats how long its been diagnosed for anyway). Apparently I have quite a chronic case but I try not to dwell on it! The one thing that really has worked for me when I have been going through a particularly rough patch is the diet in a book called "Breaking the vicious cycle - intestinal health through diet" It's by Elaine Gottschall. Basically its food plan for sufferers of chrons disease, ulcerative colitis etc. It's worked WONDERS for me and not too hard to follow either - you won't feel like your giving up too many of your fav foods! PM me if you want any specific details on this etc. Also i've found that if i take a good multi-vitamin and extra calcium it seems to help. I know every case is different nonetheless - hopefully you find something that works for you
