Default Booking a room with Super 8? Watch out for this scam.

So here I am perusing lodging accomidations for my vacation next month and decide to check options for Des Moines which happens to be the last stop on my trip. I'm only going to be there one night and don't need anything fancy so I go to where any budget minded traveler goes, Motel 6, and yikes, they want $57/night (mind you this is a Monday). I've stayed in Des Moines before and can't remember room prices being this high.

I try the next best alternative which is usually a Super 8/Days Inn type place to see if I can possibly do better, and double yikes, now were talking $60-80/night. Then I suddenly remember I have AAA membership and check the AAA rate for a Super 8. $49.50/night. That's more my speed.

I normally wait until there's a few days left to make reservations, but I have no clue whats bumping up the demand for motel rooms in Des Moines and figure that I'd better book a room while there's still one available.

So I make my reservation and the screen seems to lag for a few minutes, and then this chat box comes up...

...and I figure, well its Super 8's website, so it must be legit, and I type HI. Then they tell me I've been enrolled in some program called Travelers Advantage, and they'll bill my credit card for $10/month unless I cancel. Damn it, I just wanted to book a room!!!

So I immediately cancel my reservation, although I'm not sure that cancels my enrollment in this program. So I check Super 8's website for information about Travelers Advantage and lo and behold I can't find anything. It apparently is some third party outfit.

I check to see if Travelers Advantage is some kind of scam and find out that its one of many names used by an outfit called Trilegiant/Cendant, who apparently are running this enrollment scam through a number of legitimate businesses, namely ones related to the travel and banking industries.

    http://www.consumeraffairs.com/scam_...omplaints.html
    http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/ripoff112211.htm

This is so NOT what I needed just two weeks from vacation, and I will NOT be doing business with Super 8 until they knock this shit off. How any legitimate business can possibly be associated with an outfit like this I'll never know.

Needless to say, I'll be monitoring my CC statement online very closely over the next few months.

And why can't our authorities shut these scam operations down? Like permanently?

You need to scour that website, check your email, etc in search of a way to cancel that membership. If you can't find anything, watch your statements and dispute dispute dispute. I might even go so far as to cancel my card and send for another asap. Do you have another card you can use in the interim?

    Ugh sorry to see

OH shit that happened to me too. I booked a room with the ramada in west hollywood. I called to cancel a few weeks back and they kept avoiding my question and gave me a plane ticket instead. I just checked their website again and nothing is really a deal..I can find the same deals somewhere else w/o being charged $10. Fuck them Im calling in the morning now to speak to a manager and cancel.

    Oh, this gets even better!!

I booked another room for a Days Inn in Wisconsin, and looky what comes up after submitting it. "Jessica" must get around apparently.

This will apparently happen with any hotel chain affiliated with the Cendant Corporation which will include the following:

    Amerihost Inn
    Days Inn
    Howard Johnson
    Knights Inn
    Ramada Inn (explains TM's situation)
    Super 8
    Travelodge
    Wingate Inn

There's nothing on my CC statement...yet. I'm going to keep an eye on it and let this ride until something shows up. I will gladly forward everything I've found out to the CC company, my state AG, and the news media if I can get their attention.

    Your best bet is choicehotels.com

I wonder if its the company or if its a sour employee with Cendant lol. I used to do car bookings for them as they own Avis and Budget as well as all those hotels. They are a bitch company to work for...

Either way thats a stupid scam.. ffs its $10, doesnt really make a difference for a hotel booking..

Doc, get the spy ware scanners and Anti-virus software on your system going. Your system might need an exorcism.

Whoa, the scary thing is, that's my real name.

It's not me Doc, I swear!

I've had similar bad experiences with booking rooms online, so now I always reserve a room by calling the hotel. It sucks because it was more convenient to do it online, plus I hate talking on the phone.

That blows!!! I was targeted by some outfit pretending to represent Southwest Airlines. Suppoesedly I won tickets and I called Southwest about my winnings and they didn't have any contest going on. It was a phishing scam. They still e-mail me. I feel your pain, man. I just knew I had a free trip!

I've always done the same thing, unless I have purchased a vacation package from Expedia or Carnival Cruises or something.

I will research hotels/motels on line, then look up the direct number to the exact location I wish to stay with and make my reservation that way. I always ask for the corporate rate. If they ask me what business I'm with I'll say something like eBay. I once got a good rate in Billings Montana by saying I was with Haliburton. The hotel staff doesn't check. They could care less anyway. Their butts are covered if the customer says the right thing, and it looks good on their performance records to keep the rooms rented.

Also try saying that you have the coupon deal from the newspaper. If they ask which newspaper, just say you can't remember as you have already clipped the coupon! If that phrase doesn't work try saying you saw a discount deal in Conde Nast magazine or Sunset magazine. I got a room at the NYNY in Las Vegas for $48 a night using that phrase. It was a one bedroom suite in the tower that I shared with two other people. Sweet! This was a weekend stay, also.

These deals can be found, but usually you have to go directly to the source. Don't mess around with reservations centers (Priceline might be okay for finding good deals, but that is all in the timing).

Good luck Doc, and thanks for the warning. I'll keep an eye out for that crap going on.

I just called to cancel. I feel dumb for being scammed. They let me cancel w/o too much of a fight. They gave me a cancelation number and I'll have to watch my bank statment to see if they did really cancelled it. The membership line and to cancel number is: 1-800-548-1116 and its EST time.

These fucking people!! So, I had to call them again today b/c apperently they are still charging me for a separate membership I didnt know I had. Its from the same company/group charging me for a different type of membership. MOFO's!!!!!! Its annoying people who keep charging me eventhough its only 9$ - thats 9 more dollars I have pay interest on.

I just hope they stop charging my card now. If I have to call back they are getting a mouth full of me.
