Default HELP!! I need advice when interviewing/ applying for a NORMAL job!

Alright... I am trying to get a "normal" day job, I am looking into maitenance and carpet steaming businesses, considering they pay enough and dont involve me and a register or me and too many customers.

My question... what do I do if I get discriminated upon due to my work history? I was pretty honest (I padded the dates on one job by a few months... but all my friends who are hiring managers said that much is expected from any applicant). I have 3 dancing and one bartender/cocktail waitress job on my resume for the past 3 years, volunteer work for a search and rescue team for a little over a year, A high-school diploma with a graduating GPA of 3.4, and good references (captain from the volunteer team, friend of the family who is an ex-school teacher, and my landlord). I am planning on dressing quite conservative, with flat black shoes, black slacks, and a muted-colored button up shirt, I am even removing my cartilage piercing (although I must leave in my gauges because the holes look even worse, they are not too garish).

Anyhoo... any other tips to help me make it in the real world? Any advice would be VASTLY appreciated!

Any time you get called for an interview with ANY company, act 100% interested in the job and company. Spend 5 minutes online reading up on it. No matter how small a company is, you SHOULD be able to find something online, When you get to the interview, act professional (don't chew gum, don't say 'um' a lot and make good eye contact while talking, etc) At the end, they'll usually ask if you have any questions. SAY YES! ASK A QUESTION! If you need tips or questions to ask, let me know.

Play up the volunteer work and cocktail waitress stuff. Maybe even change dancing to cocktailing....if possible.

Good luck. Be prepared for the shock of (most likely) making a LOT less money than you are used to and not always having cash readily available. I know a handful of dancers who quit in order to hold 'normal' jobs and none of them lasted more than 8-10 months. Main reason was $$, secondary reason was freedom.

I hold down a "normal" job.

I would never let a potential employer know that I danced or was a cocktail waitress. If it leaves a gap in employment time and they ask, I would say something to the point of "you were in a long term relationship and you didn't need to work at that time," "Or you were married and didn't work during that time," or "you lived in London (or some other place) for that period of time ... or you were taking classes here and there but did not obtain a degree ...

come up with something - just do not let them know that you worked as a cocktail waitress or dancer ... unless, of course, the job pertains to waitressing

.... or if you live in Vegas - then I think potential employers might not be so shocked to read a resume that has cocktail waitress or dancer

I hate to say it, but it shouldn't surprise you that people can be judgmental - no matter how qualified you are for a job - your past or current job can stop you from getting that job.
