Smiley I finally got a job call!

After weeks of hard-core sending out resumes, and eagerly answering phone calls from unfamiliar phone numbers just to get a solicitor or non-employer, I finally got a phone call in response to my resume! Yes! People hardly ever respond to my inexperienced resume. It was a lady calling to see if I was still interested in a receptionist position, and the position is in a town only 15mins from where I live, so it's very convenient. She said that she will be calling me back in a few minutes to set up an interview time for tomorrow.

She also reminded me to wear "professional" clothing to the interview, and said that she's had countless girls walk into the interview, and even onto the job after being hired, wearing miniskirts and tank tops! ???!!!!! What kinda job applicant would have the nerve to do that?(apparently a bunch of girls who don't realize the definition of office professionalism!) I think that I already have a slight edge over some of the apparently not-as-professional applicants, because I ALWAYS wear a dark-colored blazer-and-pants suit to offices, even in 90 degree summer weather when I'm simply inquiring about job openings or dropping off a resume. So hopefully my professionalism and effort will pay off! I really hope I get the job, but I'm going to still be on the look-out in case any jobs more in line with my degree start calling, but at least I will have a stable employment in the mean time...wish me luck! :-D

    Good Luck!

I am so excited for you. I recently got a new job myself. I hate interviews. Sell yourself and stay calm.

not to be off topic but ive never understood office attire. suites and whatnot. it just seems silly for people to wear uncomfortable clothes to try and look proffessional, and we all know looks dont mean anything about your skills.

    wierd wierd.

And I also dont get why they would be so cruel as to demand people wear all these suits, pants, and hose. Especially in AZ...hello, 100+ degrees here, thats just not right.

Whew! It all paid off. Now go rock their socks off and win them over! I hear wearing blue is a good color for interviews.

You don't have to wear pants, jackets, or hose to look professional in the heat. A light dress with sleeves, knee-length or longer, is fine in most office environments.

You women don't really have it that bad! You have a lot more leeway (well at least in my client's line of business) than us guys do.

I'll wear my flip-flops to the office on hot Fridays during the summer. I always get a comment or two on how unusual I look, or 'how I've dressed for the weather'. Sheesh!

Oh girl, I am so happy for you. The last straight job I BS-ed my way into, I wore a blazer & blouse with a black skirt, pulled my hair back into a ponytail, and had a totally straight face when I was asked about the big gaps in my (sad-looking) resume.

IMO the order of the day is to be "Miss Ice Cream"....So cool & confident about getting the job, they'll want to hand it to you....

Personally I don't mind wearing blazer suits in the summer, because most offices are overly air conditioned anyway. And I'm the type of person who gets cold really easily but can tolerate heat. I don't know why offices make us dress up so much, but to be honest I kinda like it because then I can feel like a Big Important Adult, as opposed to a job like McDonalds where I'd have to wear bright-colored polo shirts...how tacky! :-( I had so many of those "McJobs" in the past that required ugly polo shirt uniforms, that being able to wear my own clothes is freedom enough! (That's also one of the things that I liked about dancing, that I was able to pick my own outfits and wear things that flattered my figure and were my style)

So far, the lady that said she was calling me back for the interview hasn't called me...and it's been 5 hours. :-( But I got an e-mail from another company, and the girl scheduled me a 10am interview, so I'm ready for that. It gives me an excuse to not be able to work in Atlantic City tonight!(the ride is long, my car is overdue for an oil change but mechanics refuse to do it until tomorrow, and lately there hasn't been any money in AC) The interview tomorrow is for a receptionist position, and the schedule consists of 3 8-hr shifts per week, which is good because it'd leave Tuesdays and Thursdays free for further jobsearching. I'm thinking of checking out a few clubs in Philly too, so that I can dance on Monday nights, Wednesday nights, and weekends for the extra cash that I'll need...I might go down to Crazy Horse later today, or check out Risque Bristol tomorrow. Anyone have any (local) ideas for clubs around Philly?(cause I'm tired of driving to AC for clubs that aren't much busier than the Philly ones)

    Philly,

Kick ass, and keep kicking it. Follow every lead you have earned. Don't stop getting new leads till you have a signed contract and are actually working.

Regarding the person that has not called you back, you can always call to politly express your interest in a position. Don't let yourself appear desperate, because somtimes you need to follow up.

Uncomfortable as in six inch heels on stripper shoes and ride your ass thongs?

Seriously though - there should be a sense of formality in most business places. Ones clothes do say something whether it is T-Shirt slogans or style of shoes.

We tend to get away with other du-dads to stand out - I like to wear cuff links (even without a tie or jacket.)

Would you wear a black evening dress to breakfast?

Good advice - you don't have a job UNTIL you have a job.

Even then, while I have a job - I am looking for the next job.

Here is something to think about.

I came to this forum because i was working at a credit union and I ( with another girl from work )was thinking of waitressing at a strip club for extra cash. My friend and I talked about it and decided not to do it. Why? If it was found out that we worked at strip clubs at night we would of been fired. In the professional world you sign a paper stating that you will not do anything that is considered a conflict of interest with your position. So maybe dancing out of town would be a good idea still.

The main reason for dress codes is sexual harassment. The credit union had to change their dress code alot. Girls would come in with low cut tops, mid driffs, short skirts, and show as much skin as possible. The credit union felt it created too much tension. Thankfully they have business casual now, so it isnt so bad.

Get that job and use it for resume experience while you continue the real job search.

I'll send you an email this weekend, in time for you to post / respond to Sunday's listings.

    Well...

Turns out, the interview wasn't for a specific job but for a temp agency. Basically almost ANYONE gets an "interview" for it. They did mention other jobs that might be of interest to me, such as one in the title department for Daimler-Chrysler. Apparently the company is outsourcing so they're in the process of bringing in temps and laying off their employees...the temp agency recruiter asked if I'd have any problems with that and to be prepared that some employees might have a bad attitude towards the temps...but I don't care at all! First off, I dealt with LOTS of drama from strippers!(I wouldn't say that though) Second, I'VE lost jobs, and worst yet got passed over from merely being hired, for so many years, that I am coldly indifferent to taking someone's job because, as selfish as this sounds, I feel that I deserve that job after all the rejections I've faced.

But nothing's definite...and the other temp agency couldn't put me in their system because one of my job references cannot be reached. This is because the reference is a teacher from my college, who also served as supervisor of my work study job, and no shit she is on summer vacation and not at her office during the summer. But they're going to try and override that if possible, so at least I know of a few people that are rooting for me. For yet another temp place, I have a $9/hr data entry job interview scheduled on Monday...I made my cut-off at $10/hr, so I'm already dropping my standards. But I NEED MONEY. I literally made no money at work last night, and I all these obligations to pay by the end of the month...and it's not any "want" items either, it's all "need" items such as gasoline, rent, and legal fees.

Philly, I’ve been there with the agencies.

If your working, money is coming in, and income is better than outcome. Remember once you are inside a company, it is much easier to get connected.

Working at a company, You'll have access to the internal job postings, and people within the company. Also if there is nothing available at the company, and you have made good contacts, they may offer you some good leads or even an introduction. These are very valuable resources.

Use the tools at your disposal, if agents are working that is good. You will eventually do well. My wife has always had good luck and success with agencies, and they kept sending her good work till she took her current job. I am still amazed at how well she did with agencies. I do know that with agents you have to take and preform many successful jobs with them before they will promote you to the better ones.

I on the other hand have had miserable experiences with agencies. I hate the bait and switch routine, or the 'oh this skill is out of date' BS. Agents that don't understand exactly what a job entails, or what I actually do disgust me. My networking has come from people that I either knew personally, or through my tech support jobs. I was even beginning to have success with cold calling. Too many companies are using agents to outsource their human resources department. I’ll stop here before I go into rant mode. If I can avoid or circumvent agencies I will.

    Keep fighting.
