what's your skin type? I lilke Hope In a Jar by philsophy, but I have combination skin.
I think that my skin tends to be a little on the oily side, but not bad. I use Cetaphil for my face and it works really well, but it's just that the moisturizers seem greasy when I apply them and for hours after....
aveda has a good oil free tourmaline moisturizer for oily skin. also l'oreal's active daily moisture is good. i mix a little benzyl peroxide with mine or other acne/spot treatment.
That's a really good idea, I'm gonna try it, I'll let you know how it works for me. Thanks!![]()
do you use a toner?
I don't use a toner, I use an astringent like once a week, it's the blue Sea Breeze stuff for sensitive skin. Is that bad for my skin?? And should I be using a toner? Sorry, I've always been kinda low maintenance(obviously I should keep up on myself a little better) but I don't know what kind of toner to use. Actually i don't really know what toner does![]()
a toner will remove any dirt and oil thast your cleanser did not and will also remove dead skin.
You want to make sure you exfoliate so your moisturizer is most effective. If you don't get all the gunk off, it's like waxing a car that isn't clean.
What about those face "scrubs" with the little gritty stuff in them? Do those count for exfoliation or do I need something else? I've heard St Ives has good apricot scrubs and stuff, do they work??

I have this problem also.. but when I swipe my face with with hazel first, it tends to keep the oilies down.

Where do you expierience the oliness? Nose, forhead, and chin or is it mainly on the nose? Also, how long does it take you to see the shine after you cleanse? What cleanser are you using? The reason I ask all this is because I want to figure out your skin type and the other products you use could be effecting the way your skin is absorbing your moisturizer.Originally Posted by metal_n_mitsu
I agree that proper exfoliation is critical. The manual exfoliators (scrubs) are great to use 1-3 times a week, but a chemical exfoliater (AHA, BHA, retynol, etc)should be used at least 3 times a week. It doesn't have to be a prescription strength one, a mild OTC one that's built into a moisturizer will work well and be less likely to irratate.
Also, I'd stop using the Seabreeze and switch to an alcohol free toner or softener.

I like Keihl's Face Fuel. It's mattifying so it keeps the greasies away and it has a neat cooling feel on the skin. It's supposed to be for guys, but what does that matter. the great thing about Kiehl's is that you can get samples of EVERYTHING, so you can try them out and see what works.

I have really oily skin and I use medicated Apricot Scrub (can't live without it, actually), followed by witch hazel. Keeps the oilies away for a LONG time.

It's on my nose, and chin, and sometimes my forehead as well. And it doesn't take long to show the shiny, it's shows up real quick unfortunately. I am using back and forth between Cetaphil and Clean and Cleardailt pore cleanser.

Okay, so you're probaly a combination skin type. If your cetaphil cleanser is the lotion type, ditch it for a gentle foaming cleanser. I'd switch the Seabreeze to Neutrogena's Alcohol-Free Toner and use it after every cleansing. A good toner will restore the skins pH level and basically help your moisturizer work better and you'll find you'll use less moistuzer, too.
Another Khiels product recommendation- Oil Free Sodium PCA. Last I check it was only around $25 and you don't need much. If you're strapped for cash, try Neutrogena's Oil Free Moisture for combination skin.
Keep in mind, if you purchase a moisturizer containing a SPF, the sunscreen will make the product feel heavier or oilier than a product without SPF. I'm a firm believer in sunscreen, but I recommend using a seperate sunscreen in the lowest SPF for your skin type (the higher the SPF, the greasier) and layering it on top of your moisture for day.
Let us know when you find something that works... Good luck!
I'm gonna go get some today and try and see if it does the trick. Thanks! Also do you know if mixing something like Neutrogena On The Spot Acne Treatment with the moisturizer works well for times when I tend to get pimples and such. Or is mixing those two products bad??
Haha sorry I have one Post Script. I know there are ways to prevent black heads, but once they are there how do I get rid of them without squeezing out every pore in my face until it's sore and red? Is there some kind of spa treatment that doesn't cost an arm and a leg that will get rid of them??

Dammit! i had a big reponse to your latest questions but when I tried to post it, it frickin' dissapeared!
Anyhow, don't mix your moisturizer with an spot acne treatment then apply it to skin. It could cause dry/ flakey patches. It's just fine to layer your acne treatment where you need it on top of your moisturizer.
Again, using a chemical exfoliator daily will help minimize and control blackheads and breakouts. I find that with oily and combo skin, blackheads on the nose can be minimized but never completly gone. I really like Origins Look Alive ($21) or Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Anti Wrinkle Anti Blemish ($14). The texture of these products may be a little creamier than you're used to, so use them sparingly. A pea sized amount should do. Use it at night only as your moisturizer and use a sunscreen during the day. Do not use other cleansers, toners, or moisturizers containing AHA, BHA, Retinyl, salisylic acid, or benzol peroxide. Acne spot treatments when and where needed are okay.
Within the first week or two of using a chemical exfoliator, some expierience a little breakout. It'll go away. You're taking off the first layer of dead skin cells so the icky stuff underneath will surface faster. Don't freak out. I didn't breakout and after a week my skin was clearer, more radiant, and manageable.
You can give yourself a purifying spa facial. It's not as relaxing but it'll save you some change. Bring a pot of water to a low boil. You want to produce steam without making violent bubbling water. Cleanse and scub skin with a mild manual exfoliator. If the scrub hurts when you use it, it's time to find another.
Apply a clay or mud mask to entire face avoiding eyes. Steam your skin for at least 10 minutes. I like to drape a towel over my head like a veil while I stand over the pot so the steam is consistantly directed to my face. The mask should not harden or dry. You want the heat and steam to keep it moist so that the blackhead and blemishs soften. Gently remove mask with warm, damp wash cloth. Rinse any remaining mask residue with warm water.
Using two QTips, gently squeeze out blackheads and pimples. If you gotta work to extract it, LEAVE IT ALONE! You could cause scabbing, bruising, or scaring if you're too aggressive. You just want to extract the ones that are ready to leave.
Apply toner and moisturizer. Use a little acne spot treatment (a salisylic acid one is most effective without causing drynes) on blemished areas as well as lightly where you've performed extractions.
Wonderful expertise! Thank you, I'm gonna do it and I'm sure it will help a lot!
i use hydrocortisone on my shiny forehead and nose it dulls the shine and is great under makeup

I hear semen is great.
I can't believe no ones suggested this already- Use a moisturizer made for men, they usually have some type of mattifier already in them, or are made with less oil, or none at all. Make sure to put on your moisturizer at night after either just having gotten out of the shower, or put a warm damp cloth on your face. You want your skin to be warmed up, and still damp when you put the moisturizer on fror it to absorb the best.
With moisturizers with spf, make sure skin is completely dry though. Also, with the scrubs, I notice I have a lot more oil when I use a scrub, or manual exfoliator(sp?), I think it stimulates the oil glands for me.
I'd say, pick a few, but not all of the suggestions you've read in this thread, because too much action against oil will cause your skin to go crazy, and just start producing more to defend itself.
