I think for most of these meds, they tell you not to drink while on them because they're not entirely sure of how the meds are affected by alcohol. I and a few people I know have found that when you combine the two, you have less of a tolerance for the alcohol. A friend of mine, who is usually quite a tank and can drink anyone under the table, recently went on some sort of lithium-type drug, and after 2 drinks the other night, he was smashed.
I had researched online a while back, and I think doctors aren't quite sure, but they figure the antidepressant multiplies the effects of the alcohol, or else it can do things like make you more depressed or anxious when drinking. In my experiences, there hasn't been anything harmful, but it's always good to check with a doctor.

Yeah check with doctor deffinately
I had one drink when I was taking anti d early this years and ended up in a bad state.. so be careful!...
I am currently taking zoloft and my Dr. advised me not to drink. Actually he told me that you should not drink on any type of anti depressant. My Dr. said that they kind of work against each other. I have not had even one drink since I starting taking zoloft. The zoloft seems to being working very well for me and I am afraid to mess it up by drinking.
when I took prozac I went out and drank quite a bit at a party and got really depressed and came home crying and got in bed with my mom which is not something I'd normally do if I was drunk. I would still drink taking my prozac after that but would limit myself to only one drink and didn't have a problem.

Alcohol is a depressant so yeah it wouldn't make sense to mix a depressant with an anti-depressant.Originally Posted by CC_Mist
I used to drink heavily while on anti-depressants. It never seemed to have any kind of interaction at all.

as far as i know it isnt dangerous, but it can really lower your tolerance. start off with somthing really weak, watered down wine a cocktail with 1/4 of a shot.
alcohol does use up seretonin (happy brain chemical) which is what the zoloft is effecting in your brain,so you could get a "come down" from being drunk
some people i know are fine socialy drining on meds, and on the other hand my mom had one glass of champagne and couldnt walk with out help. i also think the longer you've been on the meds the better. if youve been on a consitant dose for a month your body isnt in "transition stage" so it would safer to try then.

Drinking while on an anti depressent can lead you into a suicidal state. Think about it, alcohol is the biggest depressent there is, your on an anti depressent which is helping your chemical imbalance, you add something else to fuck up the imbalance and it leads to a whole mess. I know a girl who tried to hang herself when she was drinking and on zoloft. Its not a smart thing to do at all.

Is there a reason you need to be able to drink?
