You can sterilize drinking water with a small amount of bleach (teaspoon or less to a gallon) and let it sit for the bleach smell to dissipate. You can also hit a camping good store (or the Outdoor section at Wal-Mart) for iodine pills that do the same but make the water iodine-tinged.

AW, this sucks. Pobrecito Jim. Time to get drunk!

How long do ya have to let the water sit to get rid of the bleach?

    Default Hell weekend in STL...

Wednesday evening and i'm working all of a sudden i look out the window and the sky is just pitch black. All of a sudden trees are just out there bent over under like 90 mph winds. This lasts all of an hour. Terrible storm. I go home to... you guessed it, not a stitch of power. Apparently 500,000 homes in the Saint Louis area are doornail dead as far as lights (and AC) go. Much swearing commences.

Lambert St. Louis international airport LOST POWER. How in the name of christ does the fucking AIRPORT lose power? These are the same people who poke their noses up my very asshole to make triple sure i don't have a boxcutter stuffed up there and something as simple as a power outage just parylizes them? Incredible! No-one can get their luggage, no planes can take off and half the people can't leave. I was in there ten minutes and i swear to god it just stunk to high heaven like body odor.

I go through thursday without any power. AND, to add insult to injury, there comes this goddamned boil order for water in my area. The treatment plant is powerless, so i can't drink any water unless i boil it. Now i'm fine with boiling water, but... figure this one out, how do you boil water in the middle of a blackout on an electric stove? I was ready to build a fire in my back yard. It's the middle of july, in a heatwave, with a blackout, and i have all of two bottles of water in my rapidly warming up fridge. Wound up going door to door to find a gas stove, or who knows what may have happened.

Then, friday morning my lights come back on!! JOY!! I go to work and guess what happens... ANOTHER storm rolls through. Sky's as dark as satan's pubes and i'm quaking in my shoes because after my power came back on i figured i could boil my own water so i just left it figuring i could boil some when i get home. Storm passes and i call home. Answering machine is set to pick up on the 4th ring. It rings, ringe a second time, i'm practically dying, rings again, and again... and again, and againandagainandagain... My power was on all of THREE FUCKING HOURS before mother nature (the spiteful broad) deems it necessary to knock it back out. Back to knocking on doors for a stove to boil some drinking water.

This time i can't get ice, no place in the city is selling ice now. It's gone. My food in the fridge is fucked. No way am i eating that stuff. I'd have gotten a room immediately after the second hit, but there wasn't one. Get this, every hotel within 100 MILES was booked up...

I have lights now, and they say more storms are rolling in at the end of the week... I'll have some friggin drinking water by that time if it kills me.
