It's horrible that people treat you like this because of your origins (an American friend of mine has also suffered from anti-American racism here in Canada), but it's not like you can do much about it without hemorraging potential customers... much better to take the Racist One's money away from him, is how I'd look at it :-).

As lalitha suggests, saying that you're Canadian would probably work most of the time. Somehow, I had actually been under the impression that you were... Having been to Australia, I didn't get any hostility for being Canadian. I may have just been lucky, though: I suspect that to the average Australian, our accents probably sound about the same, unless yours is a thick Southern one, or something like that. Generally, identifying a Canadian accent is a one-way thing: there are some people that you know are definitely *not* Canadian, but there are Americans who sound so close to Canadian that I could speak with them for a few minutes without being sure. There are also Canadians who have accents that are close to some American accents... there's a huge grey zone in there... effectively, I'm saying that unless yours is a marked regional accent, you'd be able to pull this off fairly readily.

Anyway, all I really wanted to say is that I didn't get any hostility in Australia, as a Canadian, who may or may not have been identifiable as such.

I totally agree. But your accent is kind of a part of who you are, I wouldn't want to change that ever. That's just MY opinion though

Anyway, being an Australian myself, I can definately attest to the fact that we are generally ignorant in the sound between an American and Canadian accent unless your accent is something obvious like a Southern drawl.

So, if you really want to avoid the anti-american stuff just say you're from Canada. It's not like the person is going to want to see your passport as you are just using this in "polite conversation" as such.

    There's a real good solution.

fun, I wasn't meaning to be tense about it, I was just making a comment. Sorry if it came out wrong.

I've tried the "I'm from Canada" bit. it works a lot of the time (yes, you guys are REALLY bad at telling) but there's been times where I've talked and gotten "What part of America are you from?" and even, "Hey you're from Orange County!!!" (WTF???!) because of my accent.

But I've thought of just saing I'm Canadian anyway, what do you mean?! Because who's going to argue even if they don't believe me? You guys KNOW how much Canadians hate being called American (because, fuck, they don't like them either).

Either way, I start classes on Monday.

Yeh, if they say what part of America you are from and they are an Aussie... retaliate with saying "What part of New Zealand are you from?" in a cheeky manner with the explanation that just like us Aussies don't like to be called Kiwi, nor do Canadians like to be called Americans

As for the Orange County part, just say that you are Canadian except you spend the last 6 months living there prior to moving to Australia so you may have picked up some of the local accent there.

Just keep re-itterating that you are Canadian in the end.

In the mean time you could say that you were born in Australia but lived overseas for most of your life. That should shut most people up too.

I personally think a South African (think Charlize Theron when she's not acting or Nicole Kidman in The Interpreter)accent is VERY sexy and melodic and you could always say your family is South African but lived all over the world or moved to Canada or something!

The same reason many Americans care that someone is foreign and dislike him/her for it.

YES, many people in other countries really do despise Americans for a variety of socio-political reasons. I myself experienced some of that when I lived in London and some of the various times I've travelled abroad. I also experienced it to a lesser degree in Puerto Rico, and that is a US territory even

I imagine the situation is much worse now, since the whole Bush-Iraq fiasco Thanks alot Dubya

Yep. The abuse I get is nearly one hundred percent political. It really is bad for the American overseas image that he's around.

Yeah I know. I was living in London when the stoopid fuck got elected the first time, and lemme tell ya, America/ns were a straight up laughing stock over there at that time.

    Irish accents are lovely.

Much easier to say you're Canadian, though. Say you're from Whistler, and you'll make money off of it, I guarantee. The whole town is run by Aussies- they're everywhere up there. Read up on the town a bit on the internet so you can answer questions (I can give you a speil if you want).

Start inflecting your 'out' words, and you're there.
