    Default Spider attack on stage!

Gah- so last night, it was super quiet when I went on stage...maybe two customers? So I was dancing kinda half-heartedly and then all of a sudden my hand touches this sticky thing- a spider web and this big huge daddy long legs dangles down to my nose. I lost it. I screamed and freaked and the manager had to come with a broom to get the web and creature away from me. He thought it was the funniest thing he ever saw. So did the bartender and waitress and dj. Then all night I felt like I had spiders in my hair, and I couldn't go on stage without looking up every second.

Just a pointless anecdote, but seriously, ew. haha

I would be having a Ninja In Heels moment. I'm not scared of spiders, but after my tango with a Recluse, I dont trust anything that doesnt have eyebrows.

Well, at least it was a daddy longlegs. They're harmless, at least to humans.

Last week a dancer at my club was nearly attacked by a cockroach while dancing on stage. I have to give her credit- she stayed and finished her set while the DJ was killing it with his shoe.

I'm still a little paranoid when I go onstage, because I don't think there's anything more vile than a cockroach.

I worked at one club (which is no longer open) that had a huge cricket problem. HUGE. I'd be onstage shaking my sexy shimmies, and THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! Crickets would be randomly jumping into me. Occasionally a girl onstage would step on one. No way in hell was I doing any floorwork down there amongst the cricket guts.

I worked there four days. After that, I just couldn't take it.

Is it true that the daddy long legs has the most toxic venom? I heard that somewhere the only reason they are harmless is that their mouths are too tiny to harm us. Weird.

urrggh just looking at pics of spiders gives me the creeps.

i got bitten by a white-tail spider when i was young and i got really sick. thankfully i've never encountered one on stage, as i'm sure my screaming, crying and hyperventilating would be really embarassing!

I'm no longer complaining about dock spiders after seeing aussie spiders. The red one was sort of neat though....but I definitely won't be inspecting one up close.

    kitty260,
that red one that looks kind of neat is one of the deadliest spiders we have in australia (and the world). they are very small (smaller than size of a key on your keyboard) so they are perfect at hiding in plant pots/broom/ boots left by the back door. something that we aussies are all very cautious of especially in the warmer months. don't quote me on ths, but i have heard that out of the 10 deadliest animals on the earth, australia has 8 of them or something like that.....
lilith morrigan would have forgotten to mention the white tailed spider and funnel web spiders which are closly related and very venomous, the trap door spider is another one... the list goes on.

that why i choose to live many floors up in an apartment in the middle of the city. damn things can't crawl this high.... i hope

It's funny how the middle one is huge but not poisonous but the other two are tiny and deadly as hell. My boyfriend says that if it looks deadly it's not but he you can't see it, it'll kill you.

Heh I think spiders are great(the ones we have here since they are harmless) they dont faze me at all. Though when I was in Aust I quickly got into the habbit of checking my sneakers before I put them on because of all the little insects that roam around.

LOL, apparently we have black widows and brown recluses up where I am but I've never seen one or heard of anyone being bitten by them, so maybe they're just going by ideal-climate instead of sightings.

There was a nasty spider hanging around at work a couple months ago, but he never bit me, just a couple of the dancers. I think he was hiding somewhere in the dressing room.

A good rule of thumb in Australia with any wildlife, not just spiders, is this:

The prettier it is, the more deadly it is.

Anything with bright, flashy colors is going to be poisonous as all hell. That means spiders, seashells, every kind of bug or animal. There might be exceptions but this is a pretty good rule of thumb. The plain brown ugly stuff usually won't hurt you at all. So if it's pretty or colorful, DON'T touch it! (Especially in Queensland - they even have SEASHELLS that will kill you!)

Haha, yeah I was pissed! In the CR there was this little string of web in the corner too and I told the manager as soon as I was out. He still teases me (said for the rest of the stage routine after the rescue I was hiding behind the pole...which come to think of it, I totally was- just holding it tightly and looking at the ceiling all paranoid!), but dude promised to bring a big can of Raid the next day.

And yeah, foreign bugs are a big part of the reason I do 90% of travel through the vicarious joy of binging on colourful, glossy brochures. I also don't discriminate on the variety of 'bugs'- after reading the "Hot Zone" when I was twelve, I vowed to never get anywhere the continent of Africa.
