Default Question for you girls who use self-tanners?

For those of you who use fake tanning lotions, gels, et., how often do you exfoliate? Do you do it every time you apply? What if the first coat isn't dark enough? Do you apply again without exfoliatiing?

Just curious. I notice if I do it too much, I end up rubbing my elbows raw

I exfoliate everyday. I have found that I have the best luck with the tanning lotions that build up gradually. I like the Jergens daily moisturizer. If you apply it everyday it will gradually build up over a week. I also try not to apply it twice in one day. I found it is more effective to wait a day, exfoliate then reapply.

I exfoliate before I start, then after that I dont start exfoliating again until its the desired shade ( I agree gradual tanners are better). Then I dont exfoliate again until before re-application. Or I can tell by looking when its starting to look a little bit 'rougher', not so smooth.
Sometimes I might re-apply the tanner more than once in a day, it builds up colour a bit better that way as its not very dark.

Whats everyones favorite gradual self tanner?

Do you have to wait for it to dry like regular self tanner, and watch what you wear? Or is it more like regular lotion?

BTW, you can make your own gradual self-tanner. This was on Sunless.com before all the lotion companies ripped off the idea. Buy some sunless tanning airbrush solution and mix it in a ratio of 1 part solution to 3 parts lotion. Do NOT use an AHA lotion because it won't develop. Add a few drops of vanilla extract (not imitation) to help reduce the DHA smell.

Airbrush solution is pretty inexpensive. The brands I've tried were Avivalabs and Jamaica Me Tan--the second smelled better and gave me really great color, but the second gave me the *exact* color of my natural tan. Both gave very good results.

Anyway, I always suggest doing that because Jergens and other build-up lotions are expensive compared to making your own lotion. A 16oz bottle of JMT Medium is $27 plus shipping, and a couple big bottles of regular Jergens (or even generic) would be another $10, and that'd give you half a GALLON of the same stuff that sells for $8 for a 5oz tube.

I make my own gradual tanner by mixing regular tanner (not airbrush solutions, just regular self-tanner) and my everyday lotion.

    I also exfoliate weekly.

    It goes like this:
Sunday - exfoliate totally, apply tanner
    Monday - apply another layer
    Thursday - apply "gradual" tanner

Then I'm good for the rest of the week.

When I exfoliate, I don't make the scrubbies do all the work (it aggrevates my skin), and I use a towel when I get out of the shower and rub my skin really well with it.
