what a great thread. ive been to quebec 8 or so times(but only montreal once, recently). nobody has ever been rude to me there. mainly because im usually the only one of my english speaking friends(with obvious boston accents - therefor, not english canadian) who speaks french. so they hear all of us speak english, then here me try french and have never given me crap. granted they can't understand me because i speak french french and with a thick accent, whereas they speak canadian french. both are proper. as is american english/canadian english and british english are all proper. none of these CURRENT languages was the original language. they've all deviated on their own to some extent(some more than others). so french french is proper in france, as canadian french is proper in quebec. however, its my feeling that all people who speak the language should be taught their local dialect as well as the dialect of the county where it originated. i dont know of anywhere where this practice exists.
as far as quebecois snubbing me. thats never happened, but i'd love for it to happen. because i feel im far superior to everyone and would only take their action as their defense mechanism in an effort to shelter themselves from their obvious inferiority to me.
and fyi, on the whole, newfie's really aren't that bright, and im sure you're no different. so do what you can. you got yourself out of newfoundland, now educate yourself and prove everyone wrong...atleast in this one case.
and scarlett if you think vancouverites(what do you call yourselves anyway?) are bitches you've obviously never been to boston, new york city or philadelphia. we're true assholes. i mean, you people actually LET pedestrians cross the street... UNHEARD OF!

Bubbles and Sirens are really good! I worked at Sirens and they have acodimations (Sp?) for traveling girls. The staff I worked with there were AMAZING! We were all like one big family.
I've never worked at Bubbles but I've been there as a custy alot of time and there pretty nice the woman who owns it is actualy from Monteral (same with the owner at Sirens - who You don't see very often). Over all the girls are nice at bubbles no offiance I dont mean this to be taken in the wrong way but I remeber there was this one girl from Monteral working at bubbles who was the biggest bitch I ever met! I had no problems with the rest of the girls or staff.
Both places will make You good money. I didn't usualy come home with less than $100 a night from Sirens and that was on a BAD night. I use to make anywhere from $300-500 on an average night. Bubbles looks pretty bussy also! Exspecaily on the weekends! Hope I helped!

My French is terrible, and I live in one of the most 'bilingual' areas of the country (far as I can tell). I don't know why, but my accent just sounds different. "American" or whatever, so I've been telling people that I'm from Alberta for the last while (I tried to say that I actually was American for a while and if you want some Canadien/ Canadian animosity, try saying "I'm from Oregon"- holy shit! Just not a can of worms worth opening.). Alberta (and I did live there for a few years, but not half as long as I've been here, go figure) seems to be a good cover- both for the fact that my french is so very bad, and that I sound funny to some.
I guess this doesn't help you, but I like Jenny's advice. Just go with it. And do try French, even if it's really, really remedial. Any two French words you can string together will be preferable to the patriotic Quebecer's ears than English. They will show you patience if you make a show of trying (in my experience). Even if all you say is "merci" instead of "thanks". Most will speak at least a little English anyway (especially in Montreal I would think). Good luck to you!

I Don't speak french but I have been picking up on a little bit.
Thanks for everyones help You'r advice is going to go to use =).

I'm on My way to work right now....
Wish Me Luck Girls!! =p =) ....
Bonne chance!
Actually, I was recently in Philadelphia (for the first time), and there really were a lot of jerks. There were a lot of awesome people too, but the sheer amount of guys who got off on wasting my time, telling me 'how it is', or trying to impress me with references to their 'family in Sicily' was staggering.and scarlett if you think vancouverites(what do you call yourselves anyway?) are bitches you've obviously never been to boston, new york city or philadelphia. we're true assholes. i mean, you people actually LET pedestrians cross the street... [QUOTE=PaigeDWinter]Now most folks that know me locally will tell you I'm scared of Canadia... Its the milk in a bag thing. [QUOTE]
I can honestly say I've never seen milk in a bag. Is it dried milk or actual liquid milk? Come to think of it, I'm going to Safeway to poke around in the dairy section.

Okay, now you've piqued my curiousity. What's the deal with the rivalry with Oregon vs... oh, say, Alabama?Originally Posted by mollyzmoon

I would recommend the downtown clubs. If you're working outside the city, things get more french but if it's downtown people are more lenient about the french. I know I always got less flack for being anglo in those areas.
It's an Eastern thing...Ontario and Quebec, at least when I was a kid, (liquid) milk came in 2L bags...you had to get a special oval container to hold the bags...snip off one corner, and voila! Smart, actually- good for the environment. The kids with granola mums would bring their sandwiches to school in old washed out milk bags which would get reused forever (sturdy!).I can honestly say I've never seen milk in a bag. Is it dried milk or actual liquid milk?

1. how come ive never seen a milk bag?
2. i checked out that site... thats fucking assinine. i want nothing to do with milk bags ever again.
3. yah, the people (traffic/pedestrians) in boston is normally bad enough, but with all the construction and constantly changing open/closed streets, reroutes, detours its nearly impossible to get to where you're going efficiently. combine that with the fact that half the streets are one way(and usually you'll find 3 or 4 in a row going the same direction... you know, the opposite of the way you want to go) and by the time you finally FIND a parking spot that doesn't have a hydrant infront of it, you may as well have just parked in providence and walked to boston. so now you know why we have no fucking patience and bark at people for no fucking reason :-P

Milk. In a bag.

Paige, you can't escape the Canadians where you are. Your neighborhood basically becomes part of Canada in the winter. The joke in the run up to the last Canadian election -- which was in January, highly unusual -- is that it would be just like an American election. The winner would be whoever carries Florida.

Hah milk in a bag. I remember that but I'm pretty sure they sold it all over Canada. We moved from Toronto when I was 4 and I remember drinking it in Calgary. Oh, the 80's...hah. As for this whole french thing. My mother's side of the family is actually french, I can speak it decently enough, but I have to agree. When I spent time in Quebec the people were a little snobby. Beh I guess you will get people like that anywhere.

Hey dont diss milk in a bag!! Thats all I drink, the milk tastes better hehe... yes milk comes in 1 litre bags here, I cant imagine life without it![]()

I remember milk in a bag! I drank the Lactancia kind growing up in Montreal. They had blue milk bags![]()

Hah I like how the oval lipped containers you pour them in are pretty much useless for anything else. Except maybe a ghetto vase. Or am I remembering them wrong??

Call me crazy, but I want to buy milk in a bag!! I'm an avid recycler, and the bags look like they would be much easier to recycle than the waxed cardboard containers that milk is sold in here in the US.
Oh, and most restaurants use milk in bags and have a dispenser near the drink stations. those bags are 5+ liters in size, though.
I'm still wondering why Oregonians are annoying to Canadians??

Canada is not unique in that opinion.Originally Posted by Cally
