    Default license and permanent records

does anyone know if you get licensed to dance, if it shows up on background checks, and/or if potential employers can get that information too. I am considering getting licensed in Detroit and/or Romulus, MI. Money else where in the state is hard to come by. I've been told (by an agency) that it won't show up, but I was wondering if this is them just trying to get me to work for them.

    thanks!

I've been wondering the same thing myself. I work in a club in the Detroit suburbs, but I've been to paranoid to try any clubs that require a license. Once I start my career, I know there will be an extensive backround check made.

Any license is a matter of public record. While it may not be logged into a public database today for searching, you can probably bet that sometime in the future all public records will be searchable and available to view.

Just look at county property assessor databases and credit reports for an example.
Good luck on keeping anything private in today's world. It won't happen.

Even today on the internet, big brother is requesting that all ip traffic be archived to be available to the government. ... every website logged, every google search you did, every post you made.

    Every breath you take
    Every move you make
    Every bond you break
    Every step you take
    Ill be watching you

    Every single day
    Every word you say
    Every game you play
    Every night you stay
    Ill be watching you

    I love freedom.

A license to dance is required in Michigan, or just the Detroit area? Would you need a license for the Alcatraz in Monroe?
You would not need a license in Ohio. There is Platinum and Scarletts right at the state line, and a little farther is Diamonds. Also, a new and very well run place near the state line called Bella's.

Don't know if you want to go that far to avoid the license, though.
    Good luck!

Gotta agree with Sitri. These days it seems like nothing is private.

I work with a teacher and I asked her about it. She said that while they do a background check, they don't look up past licenses. And... that's teaching. So, with other jobs, you can REALLY fly under the radar.

I had same quest. when i needed lisence. I asked the lady in the office when it was issued -- and she said that is private information that is not released to public -(future emploeyr) and etc.
now i know this is in Toronto, so i don't know in us.

on the end.. how do you trust some office? uh huh!

maybe a goodidea to ask some lawyer. business laywyer?

Well now I have two agencies telling me that the license is not a public record, and only filed in detriot, so it would be hard for other people/places to find out.

Anyone have any experience with Detroit Agencies?

Any license IS public record. It is true that currently it would be difficult for most people to find out you have a license to strip with a standard background check. But the fact is, as Sitri says, that won't remain so in the not-so-distant future. It may not happen in the next few years, but I'm betting that at some point all these stripper licenses will be searchable online for practically anyone to see.

As far as employment goes, currently employers mostly check criminal and/or credit reports - they don't really do license checks unless it is directly related to the industry, and that would only be to confirm that you do have the necessary license for whatever job you're applying for. This doesn't mean that in the future they won't start checking, but for most jobs I find that somewhat unlikely. This type of thing is mostly an issue if you're planning a future in public office or government job.

All that said, if someone REALLY wanted to know if you'd ever been a stripper in areas that require licensing, they could find out. It's just highly unlikely that most people will take that measure in the present or near future.

Point: If you're planning a career that requires heavy background checking such as government, better not get the license. But for most of us, it's not really an issue.

I was in the military for a year, if you are planning on doing anything government or miltary related they WILL find it, I promise. I was a security clearance investigator, it will amaze you some of the things the government can find out. But as far as other jobs, they only require what's called in interim background check. Which is your debts, you criminal and driving record. It will not include if you have a dancers license or not.

Guess I had to "bump" this and put some good old 2 cents in (yet it seems like I can barely come up with the 2 cents these days...LOL)

I don't know specific Michigan law, but here in Ohio when they run a "BCI check", which is a criminal background check, they only pull up a history of any arrests or felony convictions. I worked in child care previously and if you lived outside of Ohio within a 5 year period then you also did a FBI check. My husband is a teacher too, and he told me that here in Ohio to check if he is licensed the person would actually have to write to the State of Ohio and request the inquiry. The inquiry then shows up like an inquiry to your credit...who was checking, date, time, purpose. Again, don't know about Michigan, but I think many of their laws are pretty much the same.
If you're going to be a teacher and are afraid "the past" may show, it shouldn't. Again, the background checks done just specify if you've been convicted of a felony and certain misdemeanors or arrests. Trust me on this...I got a ticket from a Metropark for peeing outside (damned porta-potty was locked!) and was sweating bullets it would show up. It doesn't. I don't know how checks are run in other states, but it's pretty much this way in Ohio and Michigan that I am aware of.

I have had licenses in Detroit over the years. The last time I got ome (03) they didn't even have me on record from my past licenses at the cabaret D licensing dept of the Detroit Police Dept. In 10 yrs of dancing in the Detroit area, I have yet to see ANY dancer encounter problems with other jobs and cabaret D licenses.

On a sidenote............. I would stay away from the agents though. They will call you every day to make sure you're going in to work and it is quite an inconvenience to say the least. Also, they will require you to be on a schedule and work 3 days/wk instead of freelancing at the club.

I wouldn't drive to OH either. Many girls from Toledo drive to Flight Club and Subi's to work everyday complaining that there's no $$ in Toledo.

If you are working in an industry, like I do, that does background checks for insurance and/or bonding, yes, it can show up. It's why I don't have one. It will also show up in some other types investigations, which happened to a friend of mine trying to get into Pratt & Whitney's for Aerospace design: they are a gov't contractor working on gov't projects, so she had to get a full background check. And yes, it turned up. She still got the job, fortunately, but it's in her employment file (it's how she put herself through UofM). If you ever need clearance, such as a POP--common for many jobs that deal in any way at all Anything with higher clearance than a POP and it almost certainly will. Keep in mind that investigation such as this can be for someone other than youself, such as a husband or child in the future if they are interested in working for the gov't or a civilian contractor.

It doesn't have to be searchable by database--all they do is call the city or cities local to you and ask for public records. The cities that require written request have faxes, which is enough for most of them. Databases will make this easier and are certainly coming, but it's definitely possible already for this to pop up.

Licenses are a matter of public record, as are all licenses issued by the State, cities, counties or municipalities in Michigan for entertainers or service suppliers. That is the point of the license. Agents will tell you *anything,* as it's not the rest of their lives they are dealing with.

If none of this is an issue, go for it. It very well may never become an issues for you; but, never believe what an agent or club tells you, and most of the office workers frankly only know how to do their jobs, not what it is for.
