    Default tanning?

ok so since i'm tired of all the stains caused by the self tanner (you can't really see them in the club but they look horrible under the sunlight, i'm gonna leave the self tanner for winter when i don't have to walk around with bare arms and legs) i've decided to go to the salon and get a tan. i have two questions for you ladies:

    - what's better in terms of safer and longer lasting tan, the tanning bed (that has a longer exposure time) or the vertical tanning booth (shorter exposure time but -i suppose- more intense)

-and would you put on sunscreen lotion before or it's useless/not advisable?

    thanks!

A UVA tan (from a high-pressure booth) will last longer with fewer exposures than a UVB booth. But no tan is 'safe', and each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. Either you're getting more frequent exposures with a tan that doesn't penetrate the dermis as deeply, or you're getting less frequent exposures with a tan that does.

You could put sunscreen on your face if you're worried about facial aging, but otherwise, what's the point of putting on sunscreen if you're going to the tanning booth? You're *trying* to expose yourself to UV.

If you're concerned about overexposure, you could get a package that allows unlimited visits, or better yet one that uses minutes instead of sessions, and start with very short sessions (about 3-4 minutes) and work your way up gradually. When starting from pale, I usually start at 3 minutes for 3 sessions, then go up to 5 for 3 sessions, then 7 for three sessions, etc. It takes a while to develop color, but I have never burned from that method.

The more expensive, but faster choice would be to get a package of high-pressure sessions. In 3-4 sessions, you will have a good tan and since the beds are 99% UVA, you should not burn. (I've gone a whole month between sessions and not burned when I went back. In fact, today I plan to do precisely that.)

Do Mystic. I just had it done for the first time a few days ago- it's quick and painless (and no premie aging!). I got a good package deal, 3 for $33 (you can buy as many "3" packages as you want) at Paradise Tan, if you have those near you.

And as for stains, I don't think there are any as long as you don't use the optional bronzer spray.

Be sure to get a really good tanning lotion. You're drying your skin out so don't forget to moisturize!!!!!

There's a website that's devoted to people who do the tanning salon thing IAmTan.com

    It's informative, and amusing.

if you can, try to find a tanning salon that is a registered member of the smart tan network.

Here's another vote for the mystic tan. It's much more time-efficient, too -- you'll lie in tanning beds (even the high pressure ones) for weeks before you'll get the dark tan you can get in 15 seconds in the mystic tan booth.

Perfect color, no streaking, and no cancer!

OliviaDc - Where is Paradise Tan? 3 for 33 is an awesome deal. I tried to look it up myself, but I could find one in this area.

Also, tanforless.com has good discounts on lotions. I've been using Worship Me by Designer Skin, and it smells very good and does work quite well. I was skeptical about the whole lotion thing, but my tan does develop faster and more evenly when I use one.

I will say that spending 20 minutes in a high-pressure booth today when it was 95 outside wasn't exactly the most comfortable of experiences. Thank God they have fans.

Thanks OliviaDC I am going to go there today. I was looking everywhere for Paradise Tan. All of the other mystic tan places I called today were offering one tan for 30.
