    Default overseas disaster (long)

i think my uncle has been scammed, kidnapped, or something worse.

he went to visit a woman he met online that he had met while he was married to his now ex-wife. they sponsered her and paid for her enternet and got her a cell phone, sent her clothes and money and showed her the path to god, the things most christian based sponser programs do.

his wife started cheating on him, some bad things went down and they divorced. where things get sticky is this girl, lets call her jane, stayed in contact with him the whole time but not as just a friend. she started to "fall in love" and then she started talking to my mom and over the course of a few months she talked him into flying out there to see her. she's in the philipeans and he's never left the country, yet he agrees to go see her.

i thought the whole thing was shady from the begining because when my mom would ask her questions she would reply with how much she loves god and she's so thankful she met my uncle, always the same answer. the way she talked about her family was strange and sounded nothing at all like the usual traditions of that region, plus she knows perfect english, always knew exactly what to say and kept pushing for him to go see her, but never tried to keep in contact with his ex wife who was a very good friend of hers.

now my uncle has vanished. he's the type of man who calls you every day, calls his mom every day, calls my mom every day. he's kept in contact with us every single day since the divorce happened and the last time we heard from him was last tuesday. he was supposed to be back today, and some odd things have happened since the last time we talked to him. he sent an email to my mom but it sounded like 'jane' sent it rather than him, and a card was sent to his mom 's but he had not signed it, 'jane' did. at first i told mom he may be jet lagged but something happened with this girl's mom and she had to go to the hostpital and my uncle was left with her twin brother, alone. i believe that is the last time he contacted us. i opposed the whole affair in the first place but no one listened to me. now it seems like something has happened and i'm not sure what to tell my mom. grandma is not the type of person that would know what to do, she's a small town trusting person like her son, my uncle, and my mom doesn't know much about scams or things like this. just what we've seen in movies.

i told her to call the embassy if she can't get a hold of him but that might not be what she's suppoesd to do. has anyone been in this situation or have any clue as to what to do? we are getting worried and i know some dancers go over seas and maybe someone might know what to do in this situation. we are stuck right now and really getting worried. i would really appreciate any help. we can't be sure of what city he is in right now but we know the country.

thank you for taking the time to read this. this isn't a situation i thought my family could ever be in but mom's side of the family is so trusting, they don't think they could ever be scammed. i warned him but..he didn't listen. again, any help and thank you for you time.

Fuck yea call the embassy! Hopefully he checked in with them when he got there. (It is like the first item right in your passport on the "While in a foreign country" page. He may have left contact information there.

They will know who to contact locally to look in on him - but you be sure to get that phone number too!

he did check in with the embassy but he changed his travel plans due to storms. i told mom to find out exactly when his flight back to america is and if he isn't already home or if he doesn't get on the flight to call the embassy and tell them the story and see what we can do. he left him a voice mail and if he doesn't call back we are going to really start to worry. a friend of mine is from the philipeans and my dad was once stationed there but they might not know too much about these things.

thank you for your support. we will definately be calling the embassy so see whats up.

i hope he's ok!!! this has the potential to be a very bad situation.

there's a website about internet scames...

    http://www.419eater.com/

It mostly deals with Nigerian scams, but there is a "romance and love" section in their forum section where they might be able to give you some advice. The people on this website make a habit of outwitting and baiting the scammers and such, but they also inform people about these scams. Hopefully, it's nothing major. However, the "love" and "God" references are textbook scam scripts.

That sounds very fightening. Is it possible to contact the authorities over there and use his cell signal to at least track his movements? Can an official subpoena the call records to find out the towers that have handled your calls? Maybe you can leave a message that would suggest he has a cashflow problem. If he's been abducted that could make them put him back in contact. Suggest something that he'd have to sign to release the funds and, of course, a family member would have to meet him to do it.

me too and my family. mom said she'd call the cops and say he was trying to smuggle drugs the next time he tried to leave the country for a stranger like that. i admire his faith in people but i fear the people he might encounter, like he just did. i'm just glad they were mostly harmless. it could have been so much worse, i'm just glad it turned out so well. i hope everyone else who read this thread thinks long and hard before becoming a sponser for someone like that. it can be a good thing but there are also some scams out there to be aware of. i am all for helping my fellow wo/man, but i am also big on safety.

she wanted money. she said she was poor, then her 'house burned down' so he had to send her money to rebuild but it was quite a bit of money but when he got there she didn't want to show him the house..and she tried to get even more money out of him when he was there..he said she is quite beautiful but that doesnt make up for it. he's got two last names on her, a philipean name and an american name, all her kids have american names and he only got to meet one of them. too much stuff didn't add up when he got there. he could not call home because he was never ever alone, he's also diabetic. he didn't want to be in a position where he could not have his insulin.

i think he should have looked into it more before he went over but he was heart broken over his divorce and she was there wooing him from the second the said "i think my marraige is over" and didn't stop from there. he was looking for affection. i understand that but he could have really been hurt.

Thanks for sharing the conclusion Piper. A sad tail, but perhaps a lesson learned, and wisedom gained. I've heard many philapina tails, not that it is unlikely to happen anywhere else. It is good to help people, but yes somtimes if you don't watch it you will get burned.

There is something that he could have done. I've only just thought of it myself. If you could bring a mobile phone with you, or get a pre pay while over there, you would have a means of contacting family. All you'd have to do is go the the toilet and make a txt. We often found txt will get through in even the most uncivilized of places, as long as some phone service is available. Also have some predetermined code phrases to use. Something that sounds normal, but you know is anything but.
