It was May of 1994, and I was desperate to stay the summer in my college town. There was just no way I wanted to go back to mom and dad's. My friend felt the same way so we set out to find jobs for the summer. We probably applied at every restaurant, grocery store, coffee shop, and retail store in town. No luck. We couldn't get hired to save our lives, there were just too many other college kids in town trying to do the same thing.
At one point we were going down to the plasma bank twice a week to sell our blood. Talk about desperate! Throughout all of this we joked about going to the local strip club and getting a job. But it was just a joke, I never thought I would/could actually do it. Plus I had no idea what it was all about.
After a month went by we became desperate. On a Monday we said that if we didn't get hired somewhere by Friday we were going into the club. Well, Friday came and went and we decided to go in and have a look at the place. It was a tiny bar, but it seemed huge to me. There was this tall, voluptuous blonde on stage dancing, and I thought she was a goddess. I felt like a troll.
We asked the manager what we needed to try out and he said we needed "t-bottoms." I'll be honest, we didn't really even know what they were. Sooooo, we went to Wal-Mart and got some plain black cotton thong panties. I'm sure they were lovely. haha. At this point we were still treating it like a joke, because we were exceptionally clueless about the whole thing.
Monday came and we showed up at the club. I can't remember the outfit I wore, but I remember the two inch black heels I wore along with my cotton t-bottom. My friend, who, by the way, was not that attractive, wore something similar. The manager kind of eyeballed us and told us to pick out some songs on the jukebox. We were to dance together on stage.
I picked "Like a Prayer," by Madonna. There were about two customers in the place, along with five or six dancers. Strangely, I wasn't nervous at all. One of the girls asked me what my name was going to be. I hadn't realized that I needed a stage name so I said the first thing that popped into my head, Andy. This same girl stood in front of me and adjusted my bottoms, telling me, "You need to pull them up over your hips."
The music started up and we got on stage. I couldn't tell you what moves we did, but I'm sure they were pretty bad. After we got off stage the manager pulled me to the side and told me that I was hired but that my friend was NOT. No problem, she was pretty mortified at the whole thing.
And that was it. I started on the day shift the next day and the rest is history.
What was your first time like?
