Default Can Race & Size Ever Seem Like An Issue?

I have been dancing for over a year just recently this April. Due to my nature i am a very adventurous traveling type female. Being a dancer I feel as if I have worked at every type of club, with that being said it seems as if it is harder to aquire a job at the better paying mostly white clubs if you are curvy. I am not fat i just have a big booty and hips some white clubs like in the south do not mind it. And I notice when i show up after calling it is a wayyy different scenario. I expect club owners to be picky but I am tired of not having a choice because of my body shape or race to work at a particular club, It has gotten to the point where I was considering surgery to become thinner but I do love my body. My question is how do you over come the racial barriers, because they are there wheither or not anyone wants to admit it. I like working at all kinds of clubs. But in ohio all the good paying jobs are mostly white clubs that do not consider me.

Aww you're such a pretty girl. Eventhough me, and a handful of other dancers on SW like posts like this. Majority of the SW powers at be do not. There are alot of "race" threads...just do a search.

I know what you mean about not being able to pick a club bc of your bodytype/race. I've experienced it, and I'm pretty sure alot of other SW ladies (not just WOC, but my caucasian sisters as well) have gone through it. I'm startin to learn that it's not what the customer wants, its what the manager finds hot! And if I'm not what he wants, I need to either come back on another day to get hired, or find a club where they do appreciate my look!

Oh, I see you're in Ohio too..Well duh..you answered your own question there lmao.

Thank you ! Cinna. & Candie. Having a lot of white girlfriends and being partially white i know how there is such a extreme struggle between the two. I have a white girl friend who loves rock n roll but has a body type simliar to mine and she is gorgeous. I was so surprised when a club told her no. And a question i have for any white girls do you like working with a lot of black girls or do you feel as if the girls can be intimidating. I am from Columbus, Ohio. And the main club that everyone frequents is a club called Plush. It is a afterhours club. Mainly the staff is all black females no white girls ever stay unless they like dancing to rap & so forth. I really like working with all different races cause I feel like we learn more about each other when we do. Or I do for that matter. I know firsthand that girls try to run any girl they feel intimated by. So let me know what you think!

At My club there is alittle more white girls than black but theres still a nice few black girls. They do great stage show and sum are pretty curvy and noone at the club seems to mind. But of course You will get a few custys here and there who prefure white girls. But I still see the black girls go to the V.I.P rooms all the time. Its pretty equal at My club.

And the staff don't mind have a mix racal club. We aloud all rasicst ....

You'r even alot prettyer looking than alot of the girls are My club so You would do really well ....

I think that while you might have trouble finding a club, once you're in you will be fine. If there are 30 white girls running around for every 2 black girls, you will be in high demand. It's like a club full of brunettes with one blonde, obviously all the guys wanting a blonde will flock to the one and she will constantly be busy.

I personally love working with black girls. Not to be steriotypical, but in general the ones I have worked with are hilarous and a lot of fun.

This is very true. At my first club, I was hired by the manager. At the time, the owner was in prison, but got out like 6 months later. I had already established myself, not only as having regulars, but also as a money maker, a reliable dancer, and I had bulit a rapport with the other girls. The club was small, so all of this mattered. The owner actually wanted to get rid of me, because of my size, because he didn't find me attractive. Luckily, the manager was totally on my side and was able to keep me there! I think personality and attitude can totally help get you to where you want to be in this business.

i'm white but i grew up as the minority in my hometown. i get along with all kinds of races/shapes/sizes but i noticed people of a different ethinic background are much nicer than most caucasions. i think it's becasue life was not handed to them on a silver platter so they appreciate people more.. regardless of their background. the only white girls from small richer towns are snooty, stuck up and act like they own the world. which is sad because i'm sure they would be nice if they opened up to people. but that is just my personal opinion.

Im shocked that they did that to you at plush. i was one of the first girls that worked there when they opened back in 2003. they had all kind of girls there, black, white, and also latina. If your willing to travel, you should try cheeks caberet in dayton or pazzaz showclub.

by the way i dont want to sound crude, but a lot of the upper class clubs do tend to want the dancers to be in great height/weight proportionate. I`m not saying that you are playing the race card, but i`m a very dark skinned female that has worked in L.A, vegas, columbus ohio, dayton, and florida. i have never once been turned away from a club for being black.

I agree that size is probably more of an issue than race in general, but in Ohio I'm sure race is an issue too.

I can't say I like or don't like working with black girls. A couple of them I've loved working with, mostly I don't talk to girls at work a lot, a couple of them have been awful. Just like any other race, I guess. I've worked at a couple clubs where I've been the only white girl or one of two white girls (with a mostly white customer base) and that's been really good for my money.

Me too, Deluxxe. For the exact same reason.

It's boring as hell working somewhere where everyone is the same.

I dunno I've never got that misperception either, a lot of black and hispanic girls think that white girls are intimidated by or scared of them. I think the white chick who stopped taking her lithium (that would be me) and carries a knife every day at work is the most intimidating of all- well maybe not all, I guess the tweakers are scarriest of all.

haha! tweakers aren't scary, there's a few at my club, and i find them hilarious...or maybe i just find making fun of them hilarious?

but then again, i'm with you, Gia, i'm the crazy girl that stopped taking her medsa long time ago, and carries a set of throwing knives (and yes, i know how to use them, i'm just trying to figure out how to incorporate them into my stage shows!) with me everywhere i go.

the owner of the club i work at tries to hire a wide variety of girls, but what i've noticed is that certain types of girls just dont stick around very long. there are a lot of reasons for it... they either didnt make as much money as they wanted to, they don't like the kind of music we play (we're not allowed to play music with a lot of cussing, which a lot of times rules out rap and hard rock), they dont like the girls that already work there, or they start trouble.

i personally do not find any girls intimidating at all, regardless of race. a lot of it is attitude; around here, a lot of girls, mostly latina and black, act like they have a chip on their shoulder, these girls don't get the job. the ones that act normal and don't have a bad attitude get the job. management doesnt want to deal with girls with bad attitudes. the girls that did get hired just dont stick around long. and it's sad because a lot of them were really nice and fun to work with.

Default Re: Can Race & Size Ever Seem Like An Issue?

As of now, I'm currently the top banking black girl at my club and I definitely think it has a lot to do with my size. I'm 5'1 (5'8 with the shoes) and 95 lbs, measurements 32C-23-33. I've seen a lot of black girls, more than any other race, come and go. Mostly because they come here and the money is horrid for them. There are a lot of "Barbie dolls" (blonde, thin, big-breasted) at my club, and they tend to do the best. The top earners are thin, blonde, and average-to-busty. So when a curvy black girl comes in, automatically she's uncomfortable. I see it from the moment they walk into the dressing room and see those girls. They get nervous and their confidence hits the floor. Also, they usually dance to hip-hop and that's not the norm at my club. So that adds an additional notch of discomfort. I think before they even get out on the floor they're already feeling defeated and ready to leave.

However, to flip it, when I went to dance at a more urban hip-hop club one weekend, I walked with $20. It was because I'm not very curvy and that's the general urban standard of attractive, in addition to the fact that I don't dance to mainstream hip-hop. So there are a lot of things to consider when in this debate.

No, your body type may not do well at a mostly white club just as mine doesn't do well at a mostly black club. But, be reminded that personality is also a big part of it. At my club, I'm always positive, smiling, cracking jokes, and having fun. I think that in itself goes a long way. I wasn't doing that at the hip-hop club because, as I mentioned, I was intimidated the moment I walked in.

I work at a club with mostly white clientele. The city I work in is more diverse but the club clientele is not. I am a curvy (34D-26-36) black girl and people often think I'm Puerto Rican or Cuban or mixed black/white. I can dance and I am sensual and inviting on stage. I'm intelligent and well spoken and I am never rude or pushy or anything like that. I smile and make jokes and I never show when I'm in a bad mood or having a bad day. So why is it that on Monday I walked out of the fucking club with $20 while the skinny, vapid white girls with zero personality or body left with $400????? I'm watching them go back and forth to the lap dance area and up to the VIP rooms with guys who declined dances with me even after I sat and talked for a bit. These girls come up, say "Wanna dance?" and BAM! there they go. I only sold ONE lap dance my entire 8 hour shift! I have never made more than $200 per shift there and I even worked a double on FRIDAY and came home with $400 total! The other (non colored) dancers are making at least that much in one shift. Why am I struggling?

Something is wrong at my club and the other black girls know it. Even the manager told me it was like that but I thought I could overcome all of that because of my personality and my looks. I'm off to look for a new club where they actually appreciate my race and body type

^^^You might not want to start with that question again, b/c for some reason the mods tend to close the race threads just when they're getting into this topic well. Just do a search and look at the ones that are already established or PM some of the girls that you think will give you good and honest feedback (you can PM me if you like). I am just saying this b/c these threads always get closed and the same things are said over and over.

Yeah, I was just venting. I'm not going to delve into this subject again! It has been discussed to death.

No, I don't blame you. It's going to be an issue until it truly goes away in our society (not the fake, "I don't see color" thing, either). I love discussing it, but it frustrates the shit out of me when the thread gets closed, so now I don't bother. It's a shame though. We have such good, lengthy discussions about everything else and have differences of opinion, but this topic seems to be too touchy to stay open for long.

Being a moderator and a woman of color I DON'T have a problem with this sort of topic. I have had numerous PM's from SW members of color outraged when topics of this sort get removed so I won't be removing it. I WILL NEVER REMOVE A RACIAL POST!

Club owners tend to be middle aged and white and many are intimidated of the black race That is the problem . Period. This does not just happen in strip clubs but in life as well, right? Replace the ownership of the majority of clubs with articulate and intellectual astute businesspeople who are black and most strip clubs can become more ethnically balanced.

The way a club is run has a lot to do with guys buying dances from white girls, black girls or both. A hyped up DJ, along with dancer training IN THE CLUB can teach dancers, DJ's and managers how to make the customers feel obligated to spend money on the dancers. It can make the white customers loosen up with black girls, and the black customers who try to be macho change their behavior and spend more freely.

We all need to be able to express our frustrations on racial issues here. SW is a place for all of us black, white, hispanic, asian, etc to have a soft place to fall.

Just keep in mind that if derogatory comments or arguing amongst members ever occurs in this type of thread, the derogatory posts WILL BE DELETED along with warnings issued to the offending members. I WILL NOT CLOSE THE THREAD THOUGH!!!

We all need to express our racial frustrations. Just no name calling or arguing please!

Thanks Tina for doing that. I admit I was annoyed when the last thread we had like this was closed- I thought there were thoughtful posts and no one was out of line...threads like that should be kept open. Many Americans are so afraid to discuss race issues. How can we begin to find solutions if people just ignore the problem?

Anyhow when I first started dancing I was the only woman of color at my club- some days I made no money, other days I could barely hold all the tips with both hands. But I couldn't just depend on stage money- almost no one would get and VIP with me. (Honestly because of club rules it was hard for almost every dancer to sell but I couldn't get one period) It began to get me down and I knew I needed to make a change and find another place of employment.

You just said it the reason yourself as to why you didn't make any money. When you work at your majority white clubs, you're friendly social, and your personality shines through while you are on stage. Why would it be no different when you went to the urban club?

I've always thought that I could NEVER work in an urban hip hop club either. I changed my perception of that real quick last week. I went to work in my first black/latin club down in Miami. As soon as I walked in the door I was uncomfortable. But I did what I had to do. I treated the customers there (black, latins, whites) just as well as I treated the customers at my home club.

At first I was intimidated by the other black and latina girls at the club..why cause I'm self conscience about my ass. Anyway after walking out of that club EVERYNIGHT I was there making all the money I realized it wasn't about my bodytype. Again, ALL men have preferances. All men dont' like WOC to be thick, with 40in asses and dance to hip hop!

i currently have a 40 inch ass, do not dance to hip-hop and mostly sell to white and hispanic guys. and most of my dancing time i've been 35-37 inches in the booty and done quite all right selling to a diverse clientele.
