    ibook g4 battery help needed

Ive had my ibook g4 for a year now. i just upgraded the ram to 512 about 2 weeks ago.

last night i was using it on battery power and all of a sudden it just shut off for no reason.

ever since then when it gets down to about 25 percent battery power it warns me that it is running on reserve and then shuts off right after the messege is displayed.

prior to that, it would operate on reserve untill the battery power went down to zero which would take another 15-20 minutes (i dont normally let it run down that low)

is there any reason it might be doing that? did the battery short out or something?

Batteries tend to do this. Lithium Ion batteries can get a "Memory" in them if you don't drain them and recharge them completely from time to time.

The first generation of g4s had this issue. But later NiMH models and Lith Ion's had the technology that retards the memory creation.

    Anywho, try this.

When it shorts out, try turning it back on. Does it turn on? Call apple support to, they, for free, can direct you to their battery relearning software if it's still available. Otherwise I have a few in shop you're welcome to, or you can buy from apple/ebay.

yes it will restart just fine. ill see if it keep sit up and give them a call.

i just wanted to make sure it wasnt an error on my part.

oh i also forgot to add that when i do restart it it complely screws up my time date settings and i have to reset them. it doesnt seem that any other information is lost on it though.

That's your logic board battery. Something else entirely. You will need someone to replace it, your problems will only get worse with that.

The logic board battery saves hardware settings in it, like battery usage percentage, date/time. State of your laptop's system checks, power status, hardware addressing.

If your mac stops starting two things:

Your logic board battery lacks the power to fuel the soft power switch.

If this continues, your PRAM will get corrupted. Then your mac just wont start.

Do you notice if your bootups take longer?

    Try this miss,

    1. Locate the following keys on your keyboard - Command (Apple), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 2.

    2. Restart your Macintosh and hold down the Command-Option-P-R key combination. You must press this key combination before the Welcome to Macintosh screen appears.

    3. Hold the keys down until the Macintosh restarts itself four times.

    4. Release the keys after the Macintosh restarts four times.

    5. Your Parameter RAM in your Macintosh is reset to the default values. The clock settings are not changed.

If it continues after that, get a hold of apple or someone to replace tha battery before it becomes a paperweight. Again I will help if I can.
