Sad What am I doing with life?

I've got a few options and I'm have such a hard time figuring out what I want So I've just finished my second year at UC Riverside as a Language major. I want to go to grad school, but a "language" major doesn't turn into any grad school program directly.. I could do Comparative lit, or Linguistics, but it would be hard to get into those programs because they're not what I'll have my BA in.

Simple answer would be to change my major to linguistics (I love the field), but alas, UCR has no linguistic major. UCLA, however, has a wonderful linguistics department, as well as a grad program in linguistics.

The tricky part is that I've got a full scholarship at UCR. I could transfer to UCLA (and changing majors so late into my BA would mean I would probably have an extra year or so of classes to complete), but I would suddenly have to pay my own tuition, and move out to LA. I love LA, I drive out there all the time to see my friends, and my boyfriend goes to UCLA, too. Is it worth giving up my scholarship?

Also, I'd have to find a good club out there. I guess that wouldn't be too difficult. Sigh.. I don't know what to do I should just be able to make this decision myself... Urgh.

Pro (positive) and con (negative) lists can help you make up your mind.

List the positives and negatives you can for-see about each choice basically.

That's all I can offer. I'm not a big believer that a "college" education will get you somewhere unless that is what your field of future employment requires. I'm trying to not ever have a JOB. I'm trying to eventually be the employer not employee ever again.

Have you spoken to an advisor?

Sometimes getting into grad programs isn't so hard when you are staying in the same school and relatively close field. I think as a language major you would have no problem getting into a linguistics program.

Oh, you're in languages...switch. Unless you have a clear goal to apply it to.

What is Languages, anyways? Do you learn a bunch of languages? Or the history of language?

I've spoken with my advisor a whole lot.. I think she's sick of the sight of me, lol.. :-P Also with 90% of the language professors I've had so far.

The language major requires you to study 3 languages and do a bit of linguistics. Kind of an odd major, but enjoyable.

The thing is... I would love to just switch, but switching to linguistics means I have to apply to transfer.. and I don't know how much luck I have when it comes to getting into UCLA.. They already rejected me once (straight out of high school )

I've never heard of audiology.. I'll have to check that out, thanks

Sometimes your grad program will be different than your undergrad major (the degree of this difference will depend on your field). I was kind of in your situation....I started my undergrad career with a certain major in mind, then switched after the first semester, and my school wasn't well known for my new field. However, I also had a full scholarship, so I stayed. And my grad program was different as well....if you decide to stay, take as many courses as you can in linguistics, and then you should have a decent foundation for a grad program in linguisitics. Knowing many languages will also help. Good luck to you!

Do you want to go for a Master's or a PHD ? I cannot really say something specific about linguistics but grad school is a really hard road to take if you want to go for a PHD. I saw many people who said they love their major while doing undergrad but after a couple of years later in grad school they start to hate what they study. Master's is generally easier and shorter; hence even you start to dislike what you are doing, you can still a get a degree in 1-2 years, and that is not a total loss of time. But PHD is a lot harder and longer road; hence you should really be sure you want to do it and be really passionate about the subject you want to study.

This is gonna sound weird, but once you get into languages, depending on the language, the DOD is apt to pick you up. Had a friend (female, dancer actually) who studied at UCLA and the DOD picked her up, paid her whole tuition through her masters, and taught her nine languages.

Don't know what she does now (she can't tell me). No lie. But she's really happy.

Whoops. Sorry. Department of Defense. Don't laugh. I am not a America First dude. But if you can speak it, they need it translated. Pretty much everywhere, I'm afraid. And they will pay for it. Great benefits, too. Put those tax dollars to work! I am not kidding.
