I know doctors who will flat out refuse to put girls on depo because of all the long term effects of it. I was on it for a year... it took 3 years for my period to come back.. even now its all messed up. It causes osteoporosis, weight gain, moodyness, your period to vanish completly, decrease in sex drive etc... It makes your body think your preg.. so think of all the effects. My gf who is a fitness freak and super healthy eater gained 100lbs on depo for no known reason. I gained 50lbs on it and I was a super active person with healthy eating habbits. Ugh im so against depo its insane. Nevermind the migraines it caused me.

I recomend going for the nuvaring... all the girls are raving about it plus it doesnt mess with your body.

do a search. It's been worth it for me, but it seems I'm one of the few on this website who's been lucky with it. Little bit of weight gain (since I started 3-4 years ago, I'm steadily at about 20 lbs up.) That sounds like a lot but I also started taking it when I was eighteen before I went to college. I can get my weight down so that I'm only 10-15 lbs. up from my high school days, but you get the drift--not all of it is depo's fault.

you're going to get a lot of horror stories.
I'd suggest going with the Luna one month injection first and see if you have any side effects, because really, if you get side effects with depo, there's not a damn thing they can do about it til the injection runs its course.

    good luck!

PS. I personally am so glad NOT to have a period, but not everyone has that effect. Now, if they could fry my uterus instead of saying no since I'm in prime child bearing years! Sheesh! Help out overpopulation!

I didnt have a good experience with it at all. I gained almost 20lbs in 6 months, crazy, irritable, and depressed. I only did 2 series of it and that was that for me. I said no and went back on the pill. I had bad spotting for only the first month though and after that I had no period at all. For me there were more cons than pros.

Facygirl's idea sounds great to try out at first. That nuvaring man I swear every chic has one. Its the new black dress or something.

I was on depo for 8 years. I love dnot having any periods, and had no side affects becodes the weight gain, which was around 20 lbs. I lost the weight as soon as I stopped depo. Something important tho - If you take depo, you MUST take calcium suppliment, as it does cause bone density loss, which can lead to osteoporosis later in life, and make you more prone to breaking a bone. I had my bone density tested a few months ago and was suprised to find that it was in the bad range, and then I remembered reading about how it causes beon density loss, unfortunatly, when I was on the shot, they did not know that yet, and noone ever told me to take a suppliment

I'm on depo and I didn't turn into a cow or go mad. The doctor gave me a little booklet about all the facts, good and bad, about the stuff. It was really helpful. Anyways, if you constantly took it for maybe over 6 or 7 years it could start weakening your bones, but I don't plan on taking it that long. I barely have a period, usually none which is good. My periods, from the start, used to last a month with only a week break. I had developed anemia... :o Anyways... off topic. Birth control is good to regulate crazy periods.

I experienced depression & weight gain on depo. It took it for about 2 and a half years. It also causes bone loss long term (by terminating your period). I am not a fan... The weight gain was totally controlable with increased vigilance, BUT the depression and mood swings were RIDICULOUS and ended up needing medical treatment. Furtherrmore, once your body has been wired for depression you have to be that much more careful not to head down that road again especially when pregnant/postpartum, etc.

Not having a perriod was great though. You may not respond to it badly, but you MUST keep an eye out for the possible side effects.

If you're not planning on havingn kids within the next 5 years, maybe you should try Mirena?

By the way... about NuvaRing... I'm very sensitive, but it was irritating for me.

Depression. Weight gain. ZERO sex drive. Blech. Thank God I'm off of that mess now. If you don't want the periods, just take the pill contiunuously (your doc should be able to tell you how to do it.) Have maybe two a year, just to flush your system. The only reason that there are those placebo pills in the BC at all is because back in the time they first came out with the pill, they thought it would be reassuring to women to get their monthly.

I had a horrible experience on depo. I gained 20 pounds almost overnight. I did not have a period for one year. I was very moody and felt crazy at times. There are options out there that I think would be worthwhile to look into before taking depo.

I also had a really bad experience on Depo. It made me really moody& depressed. It was like the worst PMS I have ever had times 10.
I gained weight, had no sex drive, felt crazy & depressed, was in a constant bad mood.....

However, I am pretty sensitive to hormones and even Birth Control pills made me fell like shit. But nothing compared to how bad the depo shot made me feel. Except maybe being pregnant.

I really liked the Nuva Ring but unfortunately, I had some sort of allergic reaction to it and it caused me to get this rash all over my stomach. But other than that I loved it! I suggest trying the Nuva Ring before trying something as extreme as Depo. It seems like the people who do well on depo are few and far between.

Depo has been great for me. I didn't gain any weight, and my period is nonexistant. After 4 years on it, I do notice that I get a bit down (depressed) a few days before my next dose is due. It's DEFINITELY not for everyone, though, since every body is different...I've had friends who tried it and had their period for three weeks straight!

I became fat & frigid while on depo. No mood swings though. Not having a period was nice, but definately didn't outweigh (no pun intended) zero sex dive and putting on almost 20 lbs in less than 1 year. Like Hearts said, everybodys different.

Now that I think about it....I was on depo when I went crazy and tried to kill myself... I ended up in the hospital for over a week on meds trying to calm me down because I kept freaking out. I was severly depressed.

Everyone talks about gaining weight on depo... I never did! I was already 55 kgs and then lost the weight.... was off depo for near or over 6 months recently (until two days ago when I got a shot)... and no weight gain. Also.. the moodyness etc... nothing out of the ordinary.. nothing that I didn't experience PRIOR to being on depo. I've always had bouts of being down (not depression, there IS a difference), moody etc.. it's never been because of Depo due to having had these "symptoms" prior to Depo.

As for the bone density, how do you get this tested? This is the only side-effect which I may or may not been experiencing (tho' I consume cheese like it is going out of fashion and have two eggs a day... ?? does that help??)

Oh yeh ... and I don't get my period. I've been on it for years now.

I'm also one of the few who have no problems with it. Definately prefer this to the pill!!!

No ... novaring is not available for us Australians.

*sigh* just a slight rant: just because something is available for you guys in America does NOT mean it is available for the rest of the world. Please take the OP's location (Australia) into consideration when reply-ing...

Weight gain is a possible side affect. You can see just from this thread, some gained none, most averaged about 20lbs weight gain, and some it sent the weight off the charts. I had 2 shots, gained 20 lbs with EACH one, took me just over a year to lose it all. Never again for me!

    Implanon -
    http://www.fpahealth.org.au/sex-matt...sheets/28.html
    http://www.implanon.organon.com.au/h...on.02.2003.pdf

This is secondary information as I have personally not used it yet I have known of other females who have used it. Just like depo, it can have side-effects. Personally I wouldn't do it as depo works for me and I've seen how this Implanon has affected the other females who had it... no thank you.

Personally, give Depo a shot. If you have troubles with Depo, give the Implanon a go. If you have troubles with both, then it is best that you go back to the daily pill or just abstain from sex all together.

I came across the following which might prove good reading:
