Default TWhat's the skinny on those canned diet drinks...

    So--
I haven't felt like eating lately due to stress. I'm okay-- I still make myself eat, but definitely not as much. I've also got a cold, so I'm trying to take care of myself. I picked up some of those canned diet drinks at trader joe's, they're protein shakes. Not bad. 170 cals, 35 g of protein and 4 g of carbs. Basically I just needed something prepackaged and small so when I'm not hungry I can just take a minute, chug it down and I'm good.

I've been taking them when I know I should eat but I'm just not hungry (but once again, don't worry, I've been eating really solid meals at least once or twice a day for the past few days.) I know my eating will go back to normal, but I was wondering about these drinks. I tend to skip breakfast and opt for lunch. so I'm thinking about trying to even out my metabolism by drinking these drinks two to three times a day, and having meals twice a day (which is my norm since I eat out a lot.)

Anyone have any favorites to recommend? Where's the cheapest place to get good ones? Anything that i have to watch for high levels in these drinks? Any other concerns?

I know if I was to just do a liquid diet (which might be nice to do for a couple days to slim down the bloated belly I occasionally get) that whatever I lose will just come back. But if I drank it a lot so I was still getting the 1200 or so calories per day needed, I wouldn't hurt my metabolism would I?

    Thanks.

Trader Joe's has a good selection because almost everything there is pretty good for you overall. I would just stay away from Slim Fasts and things of the sort just because they are pretty high in sugar and low in protein.
I personally like the Go-Lean brand. It is a powder that you can mix into smoothies, water (I don't like it like this though), or milk.

Okay, so I have the info on these Trader Joe's Drinks. Can someone tell me if they're too high in bad stuff? I was stoked to find that each had 100% Calcium (and since I'm on Depo, I need that. I'm kind of bad about taking Calcium on purpose.) My hunger is returning, but I'm also trying to be aware of portion control, because before I'd go out to eat once or twice a day. I think I'd like to use these cans maybe two to three times a day, and maybe more if I'm finding that the higher protein intake in my diet is slimming me down even more (but still eating one to two solid meals a day, probably just smaller, which would be good since real portions are always smaller than we actually eat.)

    So, here goes.

Frosty Chocolate Protein Shake has 170 calories, and 10 calories from fat.
Vanilla Cream Protein Shake has 160 calories, and 10 calories from fat.

    The BOTH have:
    Total Fat: 1g, 2%
    Sat Fat: 0.5 g, 3%
    Transfat: 0g
    Cholesterol: 10mg, 3%
    Sodium: 150mg, 6%
    Potassium: 240mg, 7%

    Frosty Chocolate has:
    Total Carb: 4g, 1%
    Dietary Fiber: 1g, 4%
    Sugars: 2g

    Vanilla Cream has:
    Total Carb: 2g, 1% (I don't understand how 2 and 4g are both 1%)
    Dietary Fiber: 0g
    Sugar: 1g

    They BOTH have:
    Protein: 35g, 70%
(aren't carbs and proteins supposed to be equal in a diet? How can Percent Daily Values determine that you need either 400 or 200g carbs and only like 50g protein?)
    Vitamin A: 0%
    Calcium: 100%
    Vitamin C: 0%

    Frosty Chocolate has:
Phosphorus: 50% (What is THIS useful for???)
    Iron: 8%
    Magnesium: 10%

    Vanilla Cream has:
    Phosphorus: 60%
    Iron: 4%
    Magnesium: 6%

If I drink a lot of these, what do I need (besides equal carbs and some fiber for good measure) to balance out my diet?

Really, you should try eating 3 solid meals (small, but with some roughage). I'm going to TJ's later today, and I'll look at the stuff. But, from what you posted, it looks ok. Not great, but better than Slim Fast.

The basic rule is that Protein should at least double the fat content (or more). Carbs do not have to be equal to protein.

What I am worried about, though, is that you are not getting any fiber. Make sure that you are eating your 5 servings of fruit and veggies/day. If you are not getting enough fiber, you will just be constipated no matter what else you do.

As for calcium, the best way to get calcium is by eating the greenest of the veggies. One serving of broccoli has 2 x's the amount of calcium in one 8 oz. glass of milk.

Venus, is there a better protein drink out there? I don't want to do powders because I like the convenience of the cans.

As far as fiber, if I'm getting 100% daily value (which I think I am, or darn near close to it) do I need to up it to match my much more than one hundred percent protein daily value?

p.s. congrats on your baby bigness-- I saw the meter. s/he's getting huge!!!

Really, you are going to do better with the protein drinks that are made for people who are serious about weight loss. Those other drinks are just "frou frou" drinks and while they say that they have "lots of good stuff" in them...they are loaded with sugars (or sugar by-products).

Have you thought of pre-mixing some shakes in the morning and then taking them with you? You can refridgerate them for the day and just shake them up well before you drink them. The only other bad thing about the store bought cans is that they do use preservatives...which are not that healthy, either. But, pre-mixing in the morning will allow you to use "fresh" stuff. It's much healthier for you.

As for fiber, you need to make sure that your fiber is coming from actual food and not from a pill or a drink. Wheat bread is not good fiber. Your best best is getting fiber from veggies/fruits or Whole Wheat or Whole Grain bread (preferably bread that is stone ground).

Also, watch your protein intake. It's important that you get enough protein for what your activity level is (and daily req's), however and EXCESS of protein puts undue strain on the liver/kidneys (even if you don't feel like it does). On the days that you work out hard with weights...eat/drink more protein...on the days that you do NOT work out...cut down on the protein intake. Getting 150% of your daily protein value is not good if you are not utilizing all of that protein consistently on a daily basis. Does that make sense?

p.s. congrats on your baby bigness-- I saw the meter. s/he's getting huge!!!
Thanks. Baby is getting really big and I still cannot believe I am more than 1/2 way through my pregnancy. The due date seems to be coming faster and faster!!
