    Default Weird sleep..

Okay.. i've been having the worse sleep latley. I went through a period of time where i was hardly ever sleeping... now when I sleep its just weird. I toss and turn for awhile and then just pass out cold. But when I wake up it takes me forever to actually wake up. I feel like im climbing out of the sleep.. like dragging myself out and I feel like I weigh a thousend pounds and I cant move.. its this heavy god awful feeling I just cant explain. And to top it off my jaw hurts like a mofo!(thats from my TMJ). I also end up with a horrid headache and super bad pains in my neck almost like a pinched nerv type thing. I know I should probably go to the doctors.. I will it just sucks I dont have a family doctor and going to a walk in for this sort of thing is just weird because you always get that one stupid doctor who doesnt want to help you.

I have sleep problems and I think it's stress related. Are you under a lot of stress? I have trouble going to sleep but then once I get to sleep I can't wake up. Like really I have trouble even waking up by noon.

There's an accupressure point in the webbish part beween your big toe and the toe next to it that will help the muscles in your jaw release. When I just rub it my whole face relaxes and stops hurting.

The slow painful waking up is probably related to the TMJ flare up, and massaging that same accupressure point regularly *might* help it.

Thanks Lena im going to try that.

Fancy TMJ is(I copied/pasted this from Wikipedia) ..

    - Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD or TMD), or TMJ syndrome, is an acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment. Because the disorder transcends the boundaries between several health-care disciplines—in particular, dentistry, neurology, physical therapy and psychology—there is a variety of quite different treatment approaches.

Really it comes down to.. I grind my teeth heavy in my sleep. My jaw snaps and pops when I eat or talk and my jaw also locks up. There are times when I wake up where I cant open my mouth because my jaw is locked. Its a weird feeling. I had braces originally to get rid of it(my first orthodontist was on crack I swear) but it didnt help. Im hesitant to get the surgry because I will be off work for to long and its not a promise it will work and OHIP doesnt cover it because its somewhow still considered cosmetic. I used to use a bite guard in my sleep that was supposed to help but it did nothing.

The jaw and head aching sounds like you need a new pillow... and maybe a new mattress.... also, you might be grinding your teeth in your sleep... if you already do, you might just be doing it moreso now.... the rest of it sounds... well to me that is... sounds like you arent getting enough sleep, or enough restful sleep and you're exhausted/burned out from it when you wake up.

omg in the winter my sleep was just like that. I would toss and turn sometimes but mostly I'd fall asleep but I would be half awake at the same time and like unable to move at all. My body would feel sooooo heavy and waking up was the worst thing ever. I dont know what caused it to happen, possibly stress or something, but it rarely happens anymore. I also have tmj though. For tmj I have a mouthguard the dentist made me, it was very expensive though and I know you can get a nonfitted mouth guard at a drugstore like cvs which will help with your grinding/clenching of your jaw at night. I find that my tmj does get worse with stress though.

I'm sorry that I don't have any advice other than that, but hope you feel better!

oops I didn't read everything, I just saw that you do actually have a biteplate. Mine doesn't work too well either. : ( I heard the surgery isn't really a good idea, my tmj guy wanted to give me shots in the jaw muscle but he is really old and I talked to a newer doctor who advised against that. It's really tough because not many people are very skilled in TMJ or have good advice to "cure" it. good luck

If it's agrravated by stress you can either release it through strenuous excercise like tennis or boxing or you can do yoga or get body massage. I carry tension in my shoulders so that's why I like massages or knocking the crap out of something. Or try triptophan pills for about $20 a bottle.

Cally, i always sleep like shit (tossing/turning) i'm lucky if i get 2 hours straight. That's due to stress (and i work 3rd shift with my white collar job-so that fucks me up too) i found leaving a fan on helps me stay asleep...anything to make "white noise"

that wierd heavy feeling thing..holy shit is that scary!! i've had that feeling a few times (nothing recently) never figured out what causes it..never asked my doc about it either (kinda forgot about it till you mentioned it) but my doc had my on lunesta for 2 weeks (which didn't work for me) so i gave up on the druggy sleep approach.

so maybe a fan and some sleep aides with help out until you can get your body clock on track??

It sounds like you may be suffering from a little bit of stress or depression. If you have a lot on your mind it will usually result in your body being unable to get into the relaxed state that it needs to be in before sleep is possible.
When I returned to the UK after a year in Oz some nights I would be so physically exhausted I could literally DRAG my tired bones up the stairs into bed but then lie there for hours unable to nod off. The pain in your jaw sounds like its also stress related. When you do finally fall asleep you may be either grinding your teeth or just have your jaws clenched in stress all night.
In the UK you can buy these herbal tablets called "Calms". I dont know if you have them, or something similar where you are but they're WICKED! They dont knock you out like prescription sleepers do, but if you take them about 10 mins before you go to bed they allow your body to relax, and then drift into sleep. You wont feel crappy in the morning either. x

Ugh thats exactly how mine is, my lower jaw, neck, head(like a pressure headache) and down your shoulders... I really wish treatment was covered by OHIP, im thinking I pay try acupuncture for it and see if it works cuz this is getting to be out of control.

the chiropractor can help too. mine used to massage the muscle inside my mouth where my jaw it with his finger (i know, it sounds gross and weird, but he had a glove on), it really helped. i used to wear a guard. for the first few months i had to where it all day and night, then only at night after that. worked wonders! it doesn't fit anymore now since having babies moved my teeth a tad lol

I have a thing about Chircopractors.. I avoid them like the plague...I went to three different ones for my back and they all made it worse in the long run.

Hmmm you might be having some sort of sleep seizure. I always wake up tired and sore, and it's from thrashing around in my sleep and all my muscles tightening up.

i can understand the doctors not wanting to help, i dont know why doctors are like that. my husband has sleep apnea and insomnia....i've told him for years he stops breathing..when he does i have a panic attack about it (because of this we no longer sleep together), when he was in the hospital for pancriatitis(sp) even the nurses told him about the apnea. he finaly went to a sleep specialist who kept him for obersvation and said...oh no, you're fine....go home. ::sigh::
