    Default Thailand vacation

I havent taken a trip since I started dancing so I thought I'd go to Thailand. I go to school until May so I was thinking early June or even spring break which is in April.

How much money will I need when Im there?
Who should I book with to get there?
How many places can I see in a week?
What should I expect when visiting and dealing with the locals?
I'd like some suggestions on what to do there. My days would involve some partying, shopping, a day of relaxing and seeing the outdoors. I want to soak up this trip as much as possible since Ive never been out of the country before. I just want to start seeing the world.

Thailand is going to be HOT, probably too hot in June. i'd go for April. I'll be there in May 2007. YAY!

I'm going on a cruise though. it starts in Singapore and ends in Dubai. It stops in Phuket. I'm like you. I want to get as much out of a vacation as possible, which is why I like cruising. I feel like I get to sample many cultures over a couple of weeks. This is the one I'm taking....(maybe you'd want to look into something like this):
    http://www.crystalcruises.com/cruise....aspx?CID=7211

Just a heads up that I learned on my travel boards, that oil prices are expected to increase yet again since the BP pipelines are closed in Alaska for a long time. So flight prices will definitely go up, so don't wait too long to book if you are sure you want to do this.

How much money you need is relative. Thailand is relatively inexpensive for a country with so much beauty. I plan to spend a lot because I like to go luxury. I like cruising also because I leave all the legwork to them. They find all the cool things to do and book tour operators (or I can do so on my own.) Plus I can go "alone" without really being alone.

But if you just want to go and stay in one place, perhaps you should check out a travel guide like Frommer's. It'll tell you all the fun things and giv eyou an idea of what dining, sightseeing and lodging costs. That will be your major expense....besides shopping.

I spent a month in Thailand in March which is the start of the hot and dry season, its pretty much hot and dry or hot and wet over there all the time!

I went by myself with no idea where to stay and what to do, and on a limited budget but I had the best time and met some great people....

It depends how far you want to travel and how you go about it, you can fly from bangkok to some of the larger islands and go by boat to some of the smaller ones which will save time over taking to bus or trains.
That goes for the northern areas too, Chaing Mai has an airport and although I didnt go there I hear theres lots to see and do; elephant treks, moutain walks to the temples and feeding tigers!

Koh Pha-Ngan is great for parting, and theres bound to be a full moon or half moon party on when you there. I did a day tour elephant trekking, swimming in natural pools, and visiting temples there too and there are some beautiful beaches away from the party area....its easy to get stuck into the lifestyle there!

Bangkok's great for shopping but be prepared to bargin, the locals expect you to and even if prices seem cheap compared to Western prices the first price they give you will ususally way overpriced!
You'll get street sellers trying to sell you everything from wooden statues, crazy hats to fake rolex's and they don't like to give up!
If you stay in Bangkok for a while be sure to get a hotel with a pool as theres no sea to cool off in, the only place to escape the heat is in bars which was fine by me!

The locals are great though, most speak some English in the tourist areas and menus ect. are printed in English and Thai but they'll love you more if you can say some basic phrases in Thai.

Oh, and beware of the Tuk-Tuk scams and crazi roads! I want to go back now I've started remembering it all! oh, and the food...yum!

I think April is the hottest month of the year in Thailand. I was there in June and honestly, I've seen worse in the delta of Mississippi.

You're more than fine to go on your own...there are so many budget travellers travelling alone there...if you're in the khao sarn rd (banglampoo) area of Bangkok...along with any of the gulf islands.....you're bound to meet loads of people... Koh Samuii is mainly resorts... Koh Phangnang is party island and Koh Tao is the diving island...generally speaking..though each island is good for all. There are a heap of other smaller islands in the gulf but these are the most popular with travellers..
The Andaman side is gorgeous too though a little beat up after the tsunami's...it may be better now but it was a mess when i was there last....mind you that was only a month or so afterwards...

lol. i didnt even think of the connection with tigers and your screen!!

seriously tho, that place is awesome, i always rant on about it, but if you get there early in the morning and give the abbots $50 or so, they will let you spend a good hour or so in the cage with the baby tigers playing. for about $10 i think, you can have your photo taken with the adult tigers, but thats nowhere near as fun

So she is not afraid of the heat but she is afraid of the bugs?

If you go mid month, they have the Songkran, or the "water festival". I've heard that everyone throws water on each other, which should have some interesting implications

Are you going to Bangkok, or the beach like Pattaya or into the wilderness? I got to do the former and the latter but I never made it down to the party atmosphere of the beach. I remember the bugs in the wilderness were bad but not like crazy bad. Again, the comparison to summertime in Mississippi jumps to mind. But, if you are EXTREMELY squemish about bugs, may want to stick to town.

Pattaya is a bit creepy. Lots of old western men with REALLY young Thai girls. Unless that's what you're into...(kidding)
There is this one awesome kinky hotel there though. If you have a partner to go with. The only reason i'd go back to Pattaya

I read about this in some book somewhere.... you will get wet. Even if you avoid the crowds, they will find you, even the check in person at the hotel, and they love doing it to tourists.

Awww, Thailand is awesome!! I went there for a month and fell in love with the place. You can get REALLY cheap tickets through this company called Amnet-it's a Japanese travel agency based in New York. Here's their # 1(800) 929-2663. The best thing to do is get a travel guide and get some ideas of where you want to go. If you're flying into Bangkok, when you get your luggage go outside where the taxis are waiting (they are the ones who won't overcharge you) and tell them to take you to Khoasan Road. That's backpacker central and the starting point for pretty much everyone that backpacks there. There's tons of guesthouses, bars, restaurants, internet cafes, food vendors, etc. It's sooo cheap. Meals for a dollar, rooms for 5-10. They have the tourism thing there down to a science. Most guesthouse are also travel agencies and will have pictures behind the desk of different places you can go. You buy the ticket from them, someone will come and pick you up, and once you get to your destination, people will be waiting to take you their guesthouses-it's so easy to get around there. Oh, and don't miss the Full Moon Party. They have one every month on Ko Phangan-it's a blast! if you need any more info, PM me. And have fun!!!!!!

<whine> I wanna go with you!!

I highly recommend Malaysia Air. You'll probably have to make a connection in Kuala Lumpur, but Malaysia Air is a really wonderful airline with great service and AMAZING food. Every seat in coach has a personal TV screen with movies on demand and over 100 Nintendo games to keep you occupied... and did I mention the really amazing food? They also put us up in a hotel with a free meal for our six-hour layover in Kuala Lumpur (actually the airport is in Sepang). And it was cheaper than the other airlines, even though the service and food were so much better.

Oh yeah, and did I mention that the food was amazing?

OMG, TM, I was just going to say that I am sooooo jealous that you'll be going to Thailand--partly because they have such amazing insects there!!!

I got into bug collecting when I took my entomology class, and when I went to the Insect Fair at the natural history museum, all the coolest, most awesome bugs came from Thailand.

This is probably not what you wanted to hear, is it?

    Here's a link:

It's by no means a complete catalog, but there are some really cool photos.

Eva airways are the nicest planes that go out to Thailand, they should still have flights out of SFO. My first time in Thailand was awesome, I spent 3 weeks in Bangkok and one in gorgeous Hua Hin. I miss it so much, I was tempted to just stay there and go to school like some of my friends there. *sigh* oh well here I am stuck in the damn states again. Have fun!I'm jealous, I'll be lucky if I spend my spring break in Vegas.
