    Default Night Terrors

I get these all the time, it's SO horrible, I wake up and am drenched in sweat and hyperventilating and usually remember vividly every minute of the dream I had and I can't calm myself down. I'm too scared to even move(ever been so scared you were literally paralyzed?) I can't turn on the light or do anything, I don't know what to do about it. I'm scared to take sleeping medicine becuase I'm afraid it will just make me sleep so hard that I can't wake up from the terrifying dreams. I don't know what to do I get so scared and just cry my eyes out sometimes cuz I live by myself and I'm almost afraid of going to sleep at night. I've developed some insomnia as well, I think it's from the fear of going to sleep. Has anybody ever had these night terrors and ever gotten rid of them? I hate being scared all the time. Can anybody help?

sounds more like nightmares and sleep paralysis-- but don't quote me, im not a professional, but I was always under the impression that night terrors are characterized by NOT being able to remember a damn thing that went on in your dream-- but again, Im not an expert...

I wish i could make ya feel better, but not only do i have insomnia, ive had night terrors and nightmares my entire life... good luck, im gonna try for the doctor tomorrow cuz i cant handle the insomnia anymore!

I've always been deathly afraid of the dark and monsters under my bed. I live alone, too and whenever I think there might be a ghost around, I start imagining sounds and shadows and I can't move... I guess I could if I had to but I'm so scared I hold my breath. I've found a nightlight helps. Have you been stressed lately? Have you gone here? http://www.nightterrors.org/
It says you shouldn't remember your dreams if they're terrors.

Yeah I do that too, my imagination gets SO carried away. I hate being scared all the time. I wake up and can't move and I was raped last year on my birthday in Las Vegas, so that might have something to do with it. I always wake up thinking there's a man in my bedroom hiding in the dark. It scares me so much.

I sometimes will wake up and SWEAR there is some strange person or object in my room, like a man standing over me or vines growing out of the wall. I mean for a few seconds (that feel like eternity) I really believe they are there. It feels like my heart skips a beat and then when I really wake up I'll realize it's not real. I also have been having terrible dreams lately. I think it's all stress related.

It would be sleep paralysis if she actually cant move. Or open her eyes, or speak.

No I'm just paralyzed with fear, I can actually wake up and stuff but I do really believe that there is a man in my room, all the time it happens. It will take me a long time to snap out of it and know that there is nobody really there. I am too scared to go back to sleep and it's just terrible. Is there medication that I can take to stop these horrible terrors??

what do you think about before you go to sleep? It happens to me sometimes when I think of something before I go to bed I have a bad dream about it.

There is a night terrors book if you care to read it I found this website http://www.nightterrors.info/

For the medication I would go and see your doctor. Night terrors are also caused by lack of sleep so if you try to go to bed earlier for a few nights your night terrors might just go away + if you do suffer from any sort of stress then talk to your mum or someone who is really close to you to solve any problems you maybe having.

I hate anyone to have poblems sleeping espically my dad he does all the time.

I hope ive given you some helpful advice.

    Take care!!

You could be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder after your assault. Talk to your doctor. See if there are any rape support groups in your area.

Of course it's because of your rape. I second boxing doc's advice. Also realize that there's various stages in the REM cycle. I don't know if this is exactly how it works, but research it. From what I understand, your deepest level of sleep (your REM or rapid eye movement time) is when you're dreaming. The thing with sleeping pills is that they're not good to be on permanently because you don't get your deepest level of sleep. I would hypothesize that if these are nightmares and not night terrors, you won't have any dreams.
In the meantime, go to a doctor, a rape support group, a post-traumatic stress group and that way you can be on sleeping pills so you can actually think straight. In the future with therapy I really hope that the nightmares will go away and you can get off the sleeping pills.

If you're scared about trying them, of course consult a doctor, but try taking half a sleeping pill and have a friend stay with you. If it looks like you're reacting to a dream but not able to shake your way out of it, they can wake you up.

I'm so sorry hon that you got raped. That was wrong and that man or men should burn in hell. I hope they burn on earth too.

i'd agree with fancygirl here....get support for the trama you've sustained in the past, it could very well be the "root cause" of the night terrors. also talk to your doctor about the night terrors in the meantime, from the reserch i've done (i'm facinated by sleep disorders) night terrors are usualy pretty treatable....but a sleep specialist will want to keep you overnight to watch your sleep patters. most people have night terrors as children then grow out of them but some just dont
