    Default Cicada Killer Wasps

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada_killer_wasp

I've never seen these before! It says they're not really a stinging problem unless molested so I am not really worried that we have a couple in the yard. I sprayed one the other day in the grass because...well, holy shit it was HUGE. I like bugs though, so I have been sitting on the porch and watching a couple of them fly around. I identified them online a day or two ago, but just now I was having a smoke out front and there was a really loud buzzing coming from the hedges. Out comes one, carrying a cicada. It then half flew, half-fell across the walkway into a little flower garden we have . I moved apart some of the stems and sure enough, there was the burrow. Anyway, I just thought it was cool. It says they're common in Texas, any of you Texans seen them?

    Those are cool.

Not cool when they nest by the door or something, but cool when they know their distance.

They are common in New Jersey. I used to see them every summer growing up, and the fear they inspired in the neighborhood kids were legendary. All someone had to do was yell "Cicada Killer!" and we would all scatter and run. I remember my older brother sneeking up on one and smashing it with a shovel. He was my hero that day.

Mr. Chris, that is so way cool!!!

But I admit I am more impressed by the tarantula hawks:

    http://insects.tamu.edu/images/insec...t/cimg333.html

Those things get seriously fucking HUGE. There are a couple in the insect collection at school that are close to 3 inches long.

The wikipedia entry says they have one of the most painful stings of all the hymenoptera:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarantula_hawk

Check out the "Schmidt Sting Pain Index." I like the way he uses those goofy, overly poetic, taking-ourselves-way-too-seriously wine-tasting-type phrases to describe each sting.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schmidt_Sting_Pain_Index

I saw lots of acacia ants and quite a few bullet ants in Costa Rica. Funny that velvet ants aren't included in the Pain Index. They're pretty common here in SoCal, and supposedly have a very painful sting.

Anyone experienced any of the stings listed the Index?

Not that it's important, but we (Ohio) have two types. There is the annual cicada, which is green and large, then the 18 year cicada, which is small and has red eyes. It last hit a couple years ago and as usual, kills tons of small trees while laying eggs. Weirdest damn thing...ugly...noisy...and thinks it can screw your lawn mower when it's running.

oh...and your cats and dogs eat them then puke the carcasses all over the house WHEEEEE

I can up you here, MrChris. We have aggressive hornets, large grasshoppers & huge roach-like bugs up here, in addition to grizzly bears....Nature is awesome here because people are not on the top of the food chain.

I once had cicadas outside the house in NZ. Actually, one had 'burrowed' into the roof. Drove me nuts. I'd have loved a few of those Cicada Killer Wasps there. After a few days I looked out my window and saw the bastard. Suffice to say no more cicadas.

An somewhat funny anecdote for you, I used to have to pay the bills for my father when he was away on business. Sometimes it had to be done in person. The old power company was at 666 Doncaster Road. The trees were filled with cicadas. I thought they were locusts. Which of course could make one think the power company was the devil... in that joking sort of way. I noticed a few years ago Doncaster Road was renumbered in that area and the power company was gone.

I've seen tarantula hawks, but never in the actual act of draggin the spider into a burrow. The cool part for me with this one was watching it attempt to fly with the cicada in its grip. Anyhoo, Nicolina, I worked at a summer camp as the wildlife director guy in Florida many moons ago. If it lived there, I'm sure I was bitten/stung/whatever by it. I have been hit by a velvet ant a couple of times. INCREDIBLY unpleasant. I would say it hurt more than the sting of the common scorpion down there, I don't recall the common name and don't want to attempt the latin. Suffice it to say it sucked. That guy's descriptions were hilarious, thanks for the link.

Yes, ma'am. I live in North Wilmington, up by the PA line. So they're definitely in Delaware. Enjoy!

It is a Seventeen year cycle for some cicadas. Noisy things, they remind me of summer even in the winter, when I hear their sound effects. But ugly is the word for them, and intimidating, if you don't understand them.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.
