    Default more pet questions

This one is for a cat.
Right now I live in a house, with another person, a cat and 2 dogs. The cat generally sticks to the basement because she is unsocial and high strung. (we don't lock her down there or anything). We are likely moving, probably to an apartment. Much smaller, cat is thrown in with the dogs and us all the time. We are anticipating some litterbox troubles. Unfortunately, the apartments we are looking at are carpeted. Anyone have any ideas on stuff we can doo to the carpet in advance to make the carpet someone kind of SuperCarpet, invulnerable to cat urine? (The cat's name is Cally, by the way. Not after Cally. Just a coincidence).

I would just keep the cat box immaculate... I mean scoop a few times a day. My cats are spoiled and if they have even a slightly dirty box... they pee/poop/whatever anywhere else. The basterds...

I was going to suggest the same. I read somewhere you can put down pepper in places you dont want them to pee. Either that or it'll piss in your stripper bag...like mine did.

Also, keep things clean in your house so that it has no "private" place to pee such as corners, plastic bags or piles of clothes.

Feliway-- we call it kitty repellant! i think its expensive, but get it, and SPRAY... calms them down like you wouldnt believe... i have a cat who bites and pretty much beats the shit out of me, if you spray it near him, he just stares at it... its like kitty haldol... a miracle... ive also been using Nature's Miracle, cuz that same cat pees on our carpet, lol

yup, feliway also comes in a plug in and helps cats adjust to transitions. They also have a dog one, Comfort something. They're about $40 and I think have two vials of the stuff. Then you just get replacements whenever-- you might consider keeping the feliway going even after she's had a few weeks to adjust as it does help with unsocialized cats.

Hmm never had a problem with this. They are all pretty well toilet trained instinctually. Just make sure you let her know where the box is-put her in it and take her paw and make the scooping motion they make when they have to cover their waste. This makes the connection for them that this is where they have to go.

Never had a problem with this method, and at one point, I was fostering 12 cats and kittens. Good luck with Cally

Don't know how to keep her from peeing on the carpet, but the only thing I've used that totally got rid of the smell was Urine Gone. You can get it at walmart or on the "as seen on tv" websites. Comes with a blacklight so you can find the pee (it glows). Also nice to have a portable blacklight when you're stripper clothes shopping

We used to sell Feliway at the vet's and used it on the housecats...mehhh. It's pretty expensive for the very slight effects it has. On a truly stressed cat, it will do little. In the apartment, I would suggest (if at all possible), finding her a little closet to put her litter box in (it's a pain to sacrifice the floor of an apartment closet, I know, sorry). Keep the door slightly open. If she likes to hide, she'll learn to hide there and won't urinate on the carpets. Urinating is *usually* more of a male cat's habit of dealing with stress. With females, giving her a hiding spot, and keeping another litter box somewhere else in the apartment (it's veterinary advice to have one more litterbox than number of cats in house, so for one cat two boxes- and again, I know this is a pain, but it makes a huge difference for behavioural problems). Pick out both boxes daily; change the litter entirely once a week. This will almost guarantee her not to make messes, though is no doubt a lot of maintenance. I do the same thing for my nervous cat, and it's a damn pain. But effective.

And a cheap, nice smelling cat repellant is anything citrus smelling. Orange peels in flower pots, orange room spray, citrus febreze for a carpet, etc
