Exclamation Pissed Off Skin and the Quest for Repair

Hi ladies, I did some searching and it didn't quite help.

I'm having a terrible time with my skin. It's been like this for the longest time, goes through cycles. The problem is it's condition. Most of the time it's like an oil slick. Other times it gets patchy with dry disgusting flakes. My pores are also huge. No matter what I do, expensive or not, my skin usually is grossly over oiled. I'm also acne prone. Living in AZ doesn't help either with all the sweating we do. I read olive oil makes you look younger, but I cant stand MORE OIL on my face. I'd like to look younger, no one believes I'm only 21, and many make it clear they're judging by looks.( IE seeing a pic of me, etc.) My questions....

    1. How do you degrease your skin??? Even alcohol doesn't work, and it's tough on my skin.

    2. How do you keep from breaking out all over? Not just talking about face, but my poor breasts, butt, back, etc. Particularly when you're sweating A LOT as I tend to do in constant 100 degree weather.

    3. How do you shrink your pores/looks younger? Deal with acne scars?I have a good hair cut, so its not that. Its my face...

Keep in mind this all needs to be on a budget. (Rough times)

    Thanks guys ahead of time..

I may have a solution for you. I have suffered for years with skin problems. I have extremely oily skin and no matter what I do it always would look oily and breakout. I have been to so many dermatologists and have tried so many different approaches to clear my skin. A couple of months ago I became determined to end my battle with acne and oil. This is what I have done on my own and it seems to be working.

I wash my face on 2x a day with a product called acne free * it is a Benzoyl-Peroxide product that also has tea tree oil in it. Tea tree oil is highly effective and not as harsh on your skin. You can also wash the other areas of your body with this soloution. The soap is cheap too. I bought a large bottle for around 7 dollars at target.

Once a day in the morning I also use an apricot scrub made by St. Ives that is oil free and contains salicylic acid. You can use this apricot scrub on other areas of your body as well. It will be most effective if you do this daily.

I then use a lot of moisturizer made by purpose. My dermatologist told me to use this product. I did not do this before. I thought that I did not need to moisturize since I have such oily skin. I have found that this is not the case. Using the moisturizer has actually helped my skin from producing so much oil.

At night I have been using clearasil maximum strength acne treatment cream. I apply the moisturizer before I apply the clearasil and then again after I apply the clearasil. The moisturizer is key in helping your skin not look dry and patchy.

As for acne scars they are tough to deal with however I did have a few and went on a quest to minimize those as well. I have found that using mederma on the scars 2x a day has helped alot. I also using the neutrogena microdembrasian home system once a week on my entire face.

Also, I have quit all soda's and sugar products. I drink over a gallon of water a day too.
As for vitamins I have been taking 50mg of zinc. However if you take zinc be sure to also take a copper supplement as well.

Before I apply my make (after the moisturizer) I use an oil control lotion made by Mac to help seal in the moisturizer and even my skin tone before makeup.

I hope this helps and Good luck!

I posted a thread about how Dove soap clears my skin awhile ago. It has also made my skin less greasy. It's really cheap too.

some skin tips that i have....other may not agree....

-for moisturizing in areas that you don't break out (which in my case is my forehead and cheeks) use jojoba oil...i wouldn't use it on areas where you break out b/c in my experience it makes me break out....if you use just a drop it's ungreasy and still mosturizing....(bonus jojoba is by far the best makeup remover i have ever use and some believe it reduces wrinkles)

-never let products that contain oil touch your face...i use purpose face wash and revlon colorstay foundation, CG powder etc and bonne belle bronzer...all are oil free....ots of girls with acne use oil based foundations b/c of the coverage but they definately clog pores

-only wash your face once a day if possible....i just wash my face at night to take off my makeup and rinse it with water...overwashing can cause more break outs

-as far as your pore problem....almay has an oil free pore reducer that works somewhat....i also perform extractions...i get a magnifying mirror and use it in good lighting...then i gently squeeze the gunk out of my pores and pull it out with the tweezers and this has made my pores smaller (just remember to use really sharp tweezers)

-i also use neosporin on new break outs (NOT the ointment....only the cream). the cream will not break you out...it helps the pimple heal faster and it reduces scars

-wash all your makeup brushes 1-2 times a week (i use purpose face wash and some alcohol)....also clean sheets/pilowcases and cell phones are important

-the aspirin mask can help too (look up previous posts on this one)

-eliminate as much diary as you can....water, spinach/lettuce, cucumers etc are great for your skin....

-milk thistle and biotin vitamins also help.....

    good luck!!!

Oh god, what if you're addicted to dairy?

As for moisturizing only the places I dont break out-thats a problem. I break out in every area of my face

You know what'll probably work for you? Tazorac. I use it now, and my skin's never been better. It de-clogs your pores, speeds up skin shedding AND fades red spots! Wow!

Serious, I'm such a fan. I've been using it for 4-5 months, and I actually get compliments on my skin now! That never used to happen.

PS Dairy is not necessarily the problem. I was off dairy the whole time my skin was crap- recently added it back in, and no change. Except now I fart more

SV, have you ever used retin-a? I'm just curious how that compares to the tazorac; I've been hearing such rave reviews on the tazorac.

CF, yesterday I ordered a 40% strength glycolic acid peel kit. It's *supposed* to really help clear the skin. Probably will receive it next week so I'll update later on how well it works for me. For your body, have you tried a body wash with salicylic acid?

accutane will dry your face up - it halts oil production... but it's a tough medication to get, and has potentially nasty side effects (primarily birth deformities) It's probably too dramatic for your situation though

I used to break out face, chest, & back, too and it was something I just had to grow out of. It stopped when I turned 25. Now, I have clear skin on my body with only occasional, mild zits on my chin & nose near that time of the month... I actually get compliments on my skin now.

Other than that, I' say screw the over the counter stuff, save up and go to the dermatologist.

I used retin A gel as a teenager, and it irritated my skin too much, I had to stop. They're both retinoids...that's about all I know, lol.

So, are you not allowed to get a script if you don't have insurance, or would it just cost too much, with the doctor's visit + paying full price for the prescription?

Yes, you can get a Rx without insurance... I know your health care is superior to ours, Scarlett, but we're not that bad!

^ I didn't mean it as a boast! And I don't think our health care is superior, anyways. It's more accessible, but crappier.

It might be worth the expense to go to a derm, CF.

I was kidding Scarlett... Whenever I think of Canada, I think of that Kids in the Hall skit where they ended it shouting, "because we have the best health care system in the world!"
