If you think school is hard, try being stupid.

Yep, did it for a few years until I was 16 and earned my full black belt (got a Junior black belt when I was 14 since I started so young). I'll never forget my master was a South Korean man who literally could not pronounce a single "F" correctly. It really is a lot of fun, but I enjoy other things more at this point in my life.

I knew 2 chics who were into all types of martial arts and one of those types was tae kwon do. They both kicked ass. They could both do some of the kicks done in movies. It was so cool to me. Be safe though because some of them have broken ankles and arms n such while practicing.

^ I AM kinda worried about getting kicked in the face and not being able to work for a bit.lol

They make you wear full head gear, foot, and hand protection when you spar. Although I did see one of my friends still break a nose from it. I would advise going to competitions if something like that scares you.Originally Posted by Bella21

I did Tae Kwan Do as a young teen. Made it about half way to black belt. I loved it! It was *fabulous* exercise and it really increased my confidence. I was asked to break my first board during my third class, though it was quite the skinny little thing, and I was allowed to use my fist (foot is harder).
Hope you have fun!
Not a threadjack, but how does tae kwon do compare to krav maga? Or jujitsu? Anyone specializing in any of those care to comment?

I took Tae Kwan Do for a few years. Once I've moved I'll be looking for a good school in Florida.
I love this martial art, and I think any one should try. Since dancers tend to have good muscle tone and flexibilty I expect you all to be doing Roundhouse, Reverse Roundhouse, and Side kicks quite well! Side kicks are one of the best, and often good for getting someone with a powerful kick they won't see comming.
My master always spent about 30 minutes of our 2hr session on self defence.
You do not need to do competitions. Although it is expected you will do it once. You can get hurt sparing. I would advise caution when sparing against those that do compete, they usually train two or three times harder than non comeptitors, and often forget in sparing you are not tring to kick the shit out of someone. You are not actually supposed to be connecting with full force during sparing. We did not have protective gear, and if you were a competitor and had it, basically the others would try and kick the shit out of you.
Between the birth of my son, and an injury I have not been doing Tae Kwan Do for the past couple of years. During sparing I went to kick at the same time as one of the competitors, and our legs connected. Due to the kick I developed a heatoma the size of a baseball on the lower left side of my right shin. I ended up having my master take care of it becuse no hospital would operate.
You will not usually have to worry about face kicks till you are blue belt or above, and by then you should have some evasion skills.
Watch out for Tae Kwan Do soccer if they do that. That is barefoot soccer with a tennis ball. Watch your feet. Guys watch your balls, you do not want to get nailed by that ball, or a kick.

No idea what krav maga is, but jiujitsu focuses a lot more on ground-fighting and it specifically targets vulnerable joints. Tae kwon do is pretty much all standing up, and specializes in kicking techniques. Very cut-and-dry style of martial arts.Originally Posted by madmaxine

Oh god I loved tae kwon do. I am thinking of getting back into it myself. I did it between the ages of 14-17, 2-3 times a week for 2 or more hours and then practice at home.
It is great for building confidence and it will really build a very sexy behind and legs. I would have really lost my mind in highschool without it.
