Default Perioral Dermatitis- what makeup to use?

For those unfamiliar, perioral dermatitis is this bizarro rash I get around my nose and chin. "Common in young women, mysterious causes, etc". I got it once before about two years ago and the doc gave me stuff to make it go away alright. But this time I asked the pharmacist (and it's a much worse break out this time) and he told me to try a mild hydrocortisone cream. But that didn't help too much so I saw the doc again and she put me on antibiotics and gave me another cream. THE KICKER is that she said the steriod stuff is super BAD for this particular rash, and I had to stop taking the hydrocortisone cream immediately. The bad news is that this makes the rash breakout get a lot worse before better (dammit).

Anyway, lesson learned is that I must be under all sorts of stress unbeknownst to me these days cuz I'm eight ways kinda sick, but thank god for freebie Canadian doctors. Also, pharmatists are not doctors.

What I need to know now is what kind of makeup should I use to cover this shit up? It's pretty nasty looking (you can google for some pretty pictures). But I'm not supposed to put anything on it AT ALL says dr lady- like nothing but warm water and the cream she prescribed. But I cannot miss two weeks of work right now. What is a very gentle cover up I could use? One that is hopefully not a hundred dollars and internet order? I look like a ghoul! My immune system needs to shape up! lol. I'm gonna be dead by forty I think, but for now I just want to look ok. Thanks everyone!

I would think mineral makeup would be your best bet right now.

    i.D bare minerals-UNREAL.

it can be a little sheep though so here's something my beautican taught me- wet your applicator brush (make sure it's natural fibre because the sythetic ones leave your skin looking dirty) tap off the water and brush it on a towel-then use the makeup as usual-it turns it into a pancake-style makeup which will cover pretty much anything!!! this really works

Those hydrocortisone creams are nasty, try some pure jojoba oil or wheatgerm oil (from the healthfood store) instead.
They're very soothing and gentle, and great for healing skin problems.

Cold-pressed essential oils and carrier oils are the best thing you can use on your face - i swear by them

Actually, DO NOT use mineral makeup with bismuth oxychloride if you have Perioral Dermatitis, as bismuth is an irritant (it helps the minerals adhere to skin). Use mineral makeup that DOES NOT contain it, like Aromaleigh.

Also, do not use random essential oils when you have POD. Many essential oils can be very irritating, esp to rashy skin. Increase intake in essential fatty acids (fish oils AND evening primrose). To sooth the rash, pierce a evening primrose oil capsule and apply contents to your irritated area. It contains beneficial fatty acids that can help. Another option is to use salves that contain comfrey and borage.

I like the following stuff for my PD and use both:
    skinfix

    miracle healing salve:

Also, use incredibly gentle cleansers. Nix anything with fragrance, any FDC or DC color, sodium/ammonium lauryl or laurth sulfates. I can send you a homemade bar of super gentle soap that I use for my super super sensitive skin that I made for myself when I'm breaking out in rashes. I have hypersensitive skin, and have gone through bouts of severe to mild eczema and perioral dermatitis, so I know what you're going through.

One other thing: Avoid flouride toothpaste while your rash is active, and for a short while thereafter. Flouride can make it worse, so if your local water is fluridated, I'd consider drinking distilled water.

Molly, if you don't have mineral makeup, let me know- I have kilos of the raw ingredients (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and iron oxides for colour), I can bring you some and you can mix your own coverup.

Yes, I'm a crazy coot and I make my own makeup, haha. I'll be weaving my own sequined fabric next .

I don't in fact have mineral makeup, but *touch wood* the rash is almost gone by now anyway. I think it was the Stevia gel i was using for my acne (which I don't have at the moment anyway) that caused it in the first place- my makeup isn't seeming to bother it. But thanks Scarlett! Making your own make-up is some impressive skill
