    Default Since guys know cars...

Recently I just got home from vacation and found the left side of my car entirely smashed up. One of my idiot neighbors managed to drive into the side of my car with his landscaping truck while I was away. Unfortunately the damage done to the car is more than the car is worth, and now I am forced to buy a new car. Since I'm commuting to school in the fall, I'm looking for something with good gas mileage but also sporty and fun to drive.

Thinking about an Acura RSX-S or a Honda Civic Si, as both are in the price range I'm looking at. Any other ideas? Something that gets at least 25 mpg highway, as I'm going to be commuting 50 miles a day for 5 days a week.

Edit: Whoops, it's only 26 miles one way.

Chevy Cobalt. I bought my kid one (LS 2 dr coupe). They are inexpensive to purchase, have good pickup and get great mileage. Plus they are American made His is an '05 I bought new. He has over 30K miles so far with zero problems.

Looks pretty cool, and a lot better than the cavalier. Chevy does have some good incentives, but that's usually only if you have good credit, which mine isn't the greatest either. What does everything think of the Scion tC? Anyone have one?

The problem is that I basically don't know what cars to look at, since I don't follow the market that much. Just looking for ideas...

Actually the cars you selected are some of the best. Best mileage, best value when you consider resale and headaches. It is very hard to beat a Civic or Acura. If you want cheap, and good mileage, then the hyundai's aren't bad. Stay away from domestics unless you want to see the value go down the toilet. Been in the business since 94, all brands import and domestic.

Thanks, another car I do like a lot is the Mini Cooper S... any thoughts on it? I've driven it before and it's a lot of fun and corners really nicely. What about it's reliability though?

Make sure that your idiot neighbor pays for your new car or at least pays you what the old car was worth. If he doesn't, sue him.

If you are concerned about reliability at all, you're going to have to get Japanese or Asian.

Honda and Toyota have the best reliability records. My old Accord went 130,000 miles with nothing more than fluid and brake changes. When I moved to AZ, I went Chevy to "fit in" and it cost me dearly, something is always breaking down. It's the little crap like AC control knobs breaking or the seat release lever breaking - or better yet, the door handle breaking (oh that happens all the time! says the parts guy) - I'm back to Japanese now.

If you have a friend who knows about cars who you can rely on to help you understand problems that certainly will come up, then go ahead and look American or at the MiniCooper.

Thanks, one reason I was leaning towards the Japanese brands in the first place. When I test drove the Mini the other day I got suckered into driving a 3 series BMW, which I can easily afford... but keep in mind I'm paying for school, my own car insurance, and everything else... I just don't need that expensive of a car in my life right now.

I can get a good deal on a 2006 Honda Civic Si, and I'm going back to the Honda dealership tomorrow to talk about financing. Wish me luck!

If you're willing to pay for a Mini Cooper S - have you thought about a Civic Hybrid? At a minimum, it gets amazing mileage - I have a friend who says she gets ~45 mpg with hers. She's had hers for ~2.5 years, and has been quite happy with it so far. Of course, with the latest hybrid craze, it's rather likely there's a long waiting list, but something worth checking out, I suppose... low 20's, base price, MSRP.
