    Default Stereotypical American Food

I am throwing a birthday party for my cat and decided to make it American themed because a LOT of my Aussie friends haven't had some of the cliche food Americans have been privy to.

    So far I have:

Cheesesticks (mmm, I miss cheesesticks. Deep fried breaded mozzerella for non-americans)
Pizza and Ranch Dressing (I even managed to get Hidden Valley dressing!! YES!)
Rootbeer Floats (with, yes, A&W Rootbeer!!! )
Sloppy Joes (my boyfriend's mum LOVED this)
    Edit:
    Seasoned Curly Fries
    Fried Chicken
Cajun Gumbo with Prawns and (hopefully!) crawdads

What else is there that's not commonly found in Australia? Pfffft. I'm trying to think.

I'm already having pumpkin pie and cranberry jelly at my 'thanksgiving' (fuck just an excuse to eat a lot of food). I managed to get pumpkin pie filling at an import store. Yes! Only $12 for a can! !!!

Candies like Herseys are just BLECH compared to Aussie candy but I DOOOOO have chocolate peanut butter M&Ms in my freezer that I can break out. Aussies and peanut butter with chocolate - damn!!

There are things I miss so much food wise. American bacon is one. I tried to get a butcher to make it for me and - no go. Turkey I miss. RANCH DRESSING! They only have Newmans Own, YUCK, and it's not popular. Immigration took my Hidden Valley away! My mum sent me the freezedried kind in the mail. Go mum!

    ------

It's amazing what you don't realize you had until you don't have it.

    Ideas?

Yeah. Not everything, but a lot. The bacon here SUCKS. I miss my smoked thinly cut bacon. They don't have things like ranch dressing, ketchup (they call it tomato sauce and it's different), mustard is uncommon, hotdogs are uncommon (and crappy when you DO find them)...

They don't have chocolate/peanut-butter ANYTHING (I've sold a lb. of it for $50 before) and they love it. Or cinnamon candy. Or much cinnamon at all, for that matter.

The candy is all made by Cadburry, Darrel Lea or Lindt here, so it's fucking FANTASTIC. Arnotts are delicious.

It's hard to find roll-on deoderant. Most aussies use spray on. D:

Tampons come in extremely small packages and NONE come with applicators. It's a finger for everyone! But you can get twelve in the TINIEST package. My friend saw mine in America and thought they were adorable.

    And a redbull is $4.50

Edit: Edit to add I also live in one of the smallest cities in Australia with only 2 million people in the city AND suburbs. So many people from Sydney or Melbourne might be different.

I never thought there was such a thing as real American food. Most so called American food comes from other countries as we are a nation of all kinds of people.
But never the less I am sure you will have fun with your party. I wonder where comes from......hmmmmm

Do you have to use like 3 tampoms for the size of 1? What the heck do you guys eat over there. No cinnamon, hot dogs or mustard. No real ketchup ..oh no. Maybe someone should send you a care package of American non-perishables.

Actually, SPAM is Minnesotan! But Hawaii is the largest consumer of it.

Hotdogs, hamburgers, macaroni and cheese, apple pie, roast beef and mashed potatoes, French fries, onion rings, fried chicken, pizza, I'd consider all these American staples.

Does Australia have Nutella? Now that shit is GOOD.

Damn, now I'm dying to make gumbo again.

FUCK now I have to find Okra again.

You can find real ketchup (in the specialty isle) and mustard (under 'american food' Ha!) but tampons are just the fuzzy bits inside the applicators we have. But a bit smaller. They come in packages of 8 and the package is like 1 1/2" tall and 1" wide. Nifty.

Yup. But Hamburger Helper is easy and comes with insta-pasta or rice and all you do is add meat and VOILA!

I was so happy to see Australian potato chips had THREE ingredients. What happened to that in American food?! Fuck, overprocess your potato chips much.

    (Potato, salt, oil.)

Oh god no, Godiva in Australia is considered poor quality chocolate! You have NO idea. And it's cheaper in Aus too! A cadbury bar is $4.00 or so and Godiva just turns to dust on the shelves for being expensive and bad. I USED to think it was so good until I had Aussie chocolate.

If you PM me your addy, VG, I'll send you some Darrel Lea and show ya!

OMG we don't have curly fries! Great idea! Mmmmm!

Hmmm...Cadbury and Fannie Mae candies here suck. Godiva is the best fucking chocolate. In fact, for Xmas gifts, Joe gets all of the AMs at work a small box of Godiva chocolates (one for each) and they go fucking nuts over it. heh

I'll take you up on a Chocolate offer!! LOL Chocolate and pregnancy...what a combo!

In Aus. the chocolate is made differently. Cadburry in America is different and made by, I believe, Pepsi. It's done with a different sugar-making process that just makes it taste funny. I believe you don't use sugar cane in America while it's a staple on Aussie soil. I forget exactly how it's different, but the same brand of chocolate (and soda, like Coke) can taste different, country to country.

Well we do get Ketchup here in Melbourne.

LM have you tried, www.usafoods.com.au ? Shipping might be a killer though. Friends and family usually work out cheaper. Someting about milk products (ranch dressing) they don't like you bringing here.

Yep you can get spam here.... bleh.

Turkey is much more common now than 12 years ago.

Yeah the bacon sucks but you get used to it. I add a teaspoon of liquid smoke to mine.

The first post has some good unusual American food, all good choices. I miss A&W a lot of the asian shops in Melbourne have stopped carrying it.

I like Herseys coco powder much better than cadburry's but then again I like my chocolate dark. The european ones are quite nice thogh... guylian seashells, truflfes. Cherry Ripe is very nice as well.

I still miss Peanut Butter Cups from time to time.

I've heard of usafoods.com. Wonder if I can get milk products through them. Yeah it was totally why I had to get the dried kind and not the liquid kind. (DAMNIT that stuff is tasty).

And I have yet to see a turkey... other than a bush turkey trying to eat my food at a park!!

Liquid smoke? Where do I get that?!?!!

I can get you some A&W if you can get me some liquid smoke!

    Guylian is soooo good.

And I have peanut butter m&ms and peanut butter minis in my freezer. Over 10 lbs of the stuff!! (~5 kilos)

It's funny Hamburger Helper was brought up, I was thinking of that. I grew up on just mainly Mexican food and my brothers and I once asked our mom what American families ate....she hesitated and said, "Hamburger Helper I think".
