    Exclamation MAC ibook G4 overheating??

The bottom of my mac gets hot enough to iron clothes if I use it for too long. Especially if I am charging it up. Is this normal?? What should I do about it??
It just got me thinking with the Dell recalls. It would be really bad for me if it caught fire as I already lost enough from Katrina, and I live in an old house with lots of wood.

Why don't you buy a large heatsink and lay your computer on that while you type? It's about $40 and it's saved my playstation, my computer... a lot.

ibook g4's should NOT have heating issues. The 700 initial release had some issues with heat, but you'd have noticed that long ago.

How long does the system take to get warm?

When it's warm, what kind of processes are you doing? Image editing? etc?

When it heats up, does the system act funny?

Do you hear fans kick on ever?

Finally under "Info about this Mac" what's the processor speed, and what version of the OS are you running? I can send you tools for the proper OS.

It is os X. It seems to heat up the most when I am charging it up while on the internet. I have safari and on a wireless connection. I have never heard any fan go on. No I have never had any problems with the system running.....but Safari does quit on me sometimes. It seems to take about 45 min for it to get really warm.

Has it always done this? How long have you owned it? Can you click on the open apple at the upper right then click on "About this mac"?

Damn you, Mast. Trying to find the problem the logical way. Just slap a heatsink on it and call it done!

    Lillith,

Heatsink wont fix it. The latest update 10.4.6 has a few updates to safari that makes it use a ton more ram. If she's going above what I assume is 256 megs she has, she'll have excessive disk swapping on her hard drive. This will cause an intense increase in heat after using safari for an extended period of time.

I was teasing. Dork. I was, in my own sense, calling you right.

I have had it for about a year. It has a 1.2 ghz processor, and 256 MB. I do not really know how long but I have really started to notice it the past few months.

O.K. Miss MBA, here's your options.

Chances are, my guess anyways, your system needs more ram. OSX runs on the NextStep distro of linux that Steve Jobs invented in 1988. This version of linux, tho pretty, was very heavy on disk swap. The problem still exists in OSX darwin today as a result of the graphic intensive applications.

To find the culprit application if there is just one (say a new printer driver that is spiking your processor to like 94% constantly or so) Go to My Harddrive > Applications > Utilities > Activity Viewer and look for processes that run at 90% or higher and stay there. Report here or in pm if you see one.

You can also try mac's suggested Power Management Reset:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

as well, you can install this widget that will tell you the processing temperature

    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashb.../istatpro.html

    We'll get it!

Bam. Put some more ram in that thing. Get a stick of 512. You'll be better off. But still, check to see if you don't have a process eating up your cpu.

Wow. This is weird. I don't know diddly jack about computers, but my husband has a mac i-book, G4. He mentioned the other day that they have issued a recall on the batteries because they are overheating and causing damage to furniture, etc. Only certain serial numbers, though. Check with apple to see if your battery is one of the ones being recalled.
