Smiley Bartending or Coctailing in Indianapolis

HEy Indy girls, I am wanting to get a bartending or even a coctail waitres job in a club. I am going to start calling places nect week, but figured I could get some info here. Does anyone know if their particular club is hiring either position, do they require experience? I've got some bartending experience, bt I've never waitressed, I also already have my liquer liscence. If any one has any info its much appreciated.

    thanks!

Well, I'm in IL. I've done both, not recently tho. I definately prefer cocktailing, you don't have to wash glasses, usually you deal w/more ppl, therefore usually more $, & you're not stuck behind a bar. Never worked in an SC, just some seedy, divey bars. Not sure what you mean by a liquor license, the bars have them, in order to be able to serve liquor. From my perspective, some places insist on bar experience, but it's really not all that hard, & a great, outgoing personality goes a long way. You can try to sell the potential employer on this, it may work. Go in dressed nicely, hair fixed, etc.

thanks, yeah I figure most clubs will hire me..lol I hope. Oh and liquer liscense is the thing we have to have here to be able to seve alcohol. Basically its just $30 paid to the state for a criminal check, and we have to take a short excise class.

Well, good luck, dear. I'm thinkin' myself of going to apply @ a new hotel that's just now in the process of being built. They have ads in for everything, including cocktail waitress.

I thought you were all hot on PT's even recently? What changed?

Gee I'm glad PA doesn't require liquor licenses!(or, I hope not!) Cause I don't want the state doing a criminal check and finding out that I'm on probation. That would suck if someone was inhibited from working in a bar because of a criminal record! I mean seriously, aren't bar-type jobs kinda sought out by people with criminal records, for the reason that they can make good money and not have to deal with criminal checks?(along with blue-collar union jobs, entrepreneurship, etc)

When I was a regular waitress I had to get a card. You pay a bit of money, $25-50, and take a class on alcohol safety and the local liquor laws. In most states, anyone who serves alcohol has to have a card. Whether probation would preclude you from getting one, I don't know.

Well, I preferred bartending...but it depends on what kind of place. You make more money bartending if its a smaller bar...but if its going to be a club...its better to cocktail waitress.

I bartended in IL for 7 years...cocktail waitressed for about the same amount of time. Depending on the type of place that you are working, bartenders don't wash anything. That's what the barbacks are for. Of course, if you work an early shift or if you work in a small bar, you'll probably wash your own stuff.

It also depends upon your ability to remember things. Lots of drink combos (which are pretty easy) but the best tipped bartenders make their money by remembering what each customer is ordering. Cocktail waitresses make the best tips by flirting and by delivering the drinks quickly.

Most places make you start out as a waitress and then move onto the bar.

As for licenses...I haven't worked in a bar for a couple of years, so I am not sure if IL has recently made it a requirement...but last I knew, there were no licenses/permits/classes that you needed to have.

Philly, you can always check your state's requirements before you apply. Or ask your probation officer. I don't think most states would prevent someone from working in a bar just because they are on probation...unless it's probation due to an alcohol-induced incident.

I second the PT's idea, we are always in need of servers, it seems.
