Default Very sore throat; no other symptoms

I reallize it's one thing after another ad infinitum with me. It really is ridiculous, but that's just me I guess.

Anyway, yesterday I woke up and my tonsils were swollen up almost covering the back of my throat , and it really hurt to swallow. It's still like that today. No coughing or any other cold symptoms (thank GOD, and I really need it to stay that way cuz next week I really shouldn't be unable to work, since I'm supposed to work out of town and I'm committed.) So besides gargling with salt water and sucking on Ricola cough drops, is there anything else I can do? I am mostly concerned with my voice right now. It does hurt to talk, but I am still able to talk without sounding sick.

In general I have big tonsils, and I get sore throats/ lose my voice kinda often. There was one time where I taught a daycamp all summer, and with all the yelling I did, I made myself unable to speak for almost a month, I kid you not. It was weird.

What can I do right now to preserve my voice and help the swollen tonsils? Thanks everyone.

Cepracol... whether it be the mouth wash or the lozenges, it really works... I used to lose my voice all the time when I was a camp counsellor @ CAM. drink some tea with some honey in it, that might help. if not, GO SEE A DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you see that doctor, ask if you need to be checked for mono as well. Mono can give you a sore throat and enlarged tonsils without the other signs for strep.

Yeah, I been this way my whole life. It is a miracle i have lived this long!

I will call the doctor office...I am seriously considering going to an urgent care centre to get another doctor though, because I have made so many appointments with my doctor lately I am seriously embarrassed to go see her again! ha

btw- my flight is early Monday morning, not Sunday? I hope that's ok and I didn't screw that up too?

If I do lose my voice, maybe I'll just carry around a sign saying "wanna dance?" and have a sexy little mute girl theme.

Well, I meant more in terms of housing, since I think my roomie is flying in on Monday as well. But, you know... whatever is good for you.

Oookk i just changed my flight and hotel reservation for Sunday instead. And I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon. Fingers crossed! I dunno. I'll be there and it will all be fine somehow. Maybe I'll call my hypnotherapist and get him to mesmerize me into a nice little ball of wellness.

    hi mollyzmoon.

i had a sore throat like you described recently. saw a doctor and got some meds. what really helped me was antihistamines. just for a few days to get the swelling under control. but DEFINITELY go to see the doc. i'm not an advocate of self-medicating!

By now your problem might be solved, but if it isn't, here's my 2 cents. Don't discount the benefits of antibiotics. If you say you have recurrent sore throats, you might have a chronic infection that flares up repeatedly. This was the case with me, and after seeing several different doctors (none of whom could solve the problem for good) I was admitted to the hospital and given repeated shots of steroids, anti-inflammatories and penicillin. Unfortunately, I was allergic to the penicillin, so I broke out in some very sexy head-to-toe hives, but it cleared up the infection anyway (though what's scary is now I have to stay way the hell away from penicillin, because allergic reactions tend to get worse with exposure. Spooky. So here's hoping this shit doesn't happen to me again). Anyway, I wouldn't have needed such aggressive treatment if I hadn't been hemming and hawing for 6 weeks while saying to myself "Well, I don't feel SICK sick, it's just a sore throat, I can keep doing normal stuff and eventually it'll just go away." Now, I'm not trying to lecture or to frighten you, but get yourself treated post haste, and if your treatment doesn't work, go see another doctor. Don't land yourself in the hospital because that shit just sucks. Feel better.

What, you crazyheads, I thought you were both (Cally & Jenny) taking the same flight as me Monday morning, arriving at 10:30am??

Molly, sounds like pharyngitis, I used to get it all the time. You'll need antibiotics if that's it.

Ok, got my throat swabbed, and got a scrip for antibiotics that I am to use if I get worse/ they call me and the swab is bacterial. For now I'm on hard core tylenol and popsicles. I *can* talk, but I'm trying to preserve it for now. I don't even sound too hoarse (like unless you knew my Minnie Mouse voice you'd never know) when I suck on ice cubes. Plus doctor lady said it's usually the second and third day that are the worst, and it gets better after that. Therefore by Sunday i will be fine; by Monday up and at them! I will get hypnotised into making this affirmation of thought a reality, just to be sure. Haha. S'all good.
