    Default Alcohol Sleepiness

Ok guys..sorry to start yet another alcohol thread. When I go out..I usually have 1-3 drinks, depending on where I am, what I'm doing. Anyway..lately it seems like all alcohol does is make me SOOOO sleepy. I get a nice buzz, but it's hard to enjoy myself when I am falling asleep! I have tried drinking coffee..doesn't help. I refuse to drink red bull..it is disgusting! and I've read it's not good for you, especially mixed with alcohol. I am only 23, and I haven't even been drinking 2 yrs..I didnt start on my birthday..but back then, it wouldn't make me tired. But I'm not sure if thats because I was going out to clubs and such, and dancing, so I would stay awake. But I think even if I was just sitting around..it would make me hyper and I enjoyed it a lot more. Now I go to bars with my boyfriend and I cant stop yawning!!!

Why is alcohol making me so tired and is there anything I can do about it? I don't want to just stop drinking..but at this rate I just might.

Are you already tired by the time you start drinking? Alcohol is a depressant and makes you kinda chill out. If so, then that may already be a start to why you feel sleepy. I also had a friend like you that every single time she would drink whether it would be a glass of wine or a few beers she would get so sleep that I dont think she could open her eyes. In her case I think she needed to see a doctor.

I think I may start out somewhat tired.. but I don't feel I am ever really that energetic either.. I tend to get less sleep than I need, but not dramatically less.. I am sure part of it is that even when I am not drinking, I get tired earlier than I used to.. before I could easily stay out til 5am on much less sleep in college..now that I get up every morning for work.. I am tired by 11pm... it just seems alcohol amplifies that and brings it on sooner. It's quite a difference considering the short time span it's changed over. Is there anything I can do to keep myself awake and more energized? I keep my eyes open..but on the ride home sometimes I fall asleep. I want to be more fun, and better company to the person or people I am out with.

Why did your friend need to see a doctor? What was wrong with her and what did they do about it?

Yeah, I get that too. Usually with beer. Not so much with mixed drinks. Try switching to something else? Or just don't drink

She never ended up seeing a doctor. She still has her sleepy problem with alcohol. You could probably fix this with something simple as a nap. It doesnt have to be for hours but at least one hour would help.

I'll try it. My friends say maybe I'm just getting old. Getting old!?!?! Ha ha very funny!

I do not drink beer at all..and I do notice that wine causes this and dizziness much moreso..but I rarely ever drink wine. I drink mixed drinks.. along the lines of chocolate martinis and mojitos.

Another thing my bf commented about yesterday is my chest and back turn red and feel hot..but then it goes away. I don't know why that happens...but other than looking bad, it doesn't really bother me.

the body gets tired while metabolising the high level of sugars in the blood that come with alcoholic drinks....
this s the sleepiness u may feel but,
if you fall asleep - like many ppl have a drink to relax be4 bed- it wont be a good sleep.
u ll wake up in about 3 hours and yr pattern of sleep will be disrupted as alcohol changes the electric activity of the brain.

Well I've been doing a little research..and they do say alcohol is a nervous system depressant..so that makes sense.. but I also happened upon some info on why I turn red.. it's called alcohol flush reaction..and it means I'm missing one of the enzymes that breaks down an alcohol by product in the body. Apparantly it's very common in the Asian population.. I am caucasian.. some people noted that they think sugar makes it worse..which would make a lot of sense because now I drink whatever I want but before I would stick to vanilla vodka and diet coke.

It may also explain the sleepiness, extreme sleepiness is listed as one of the possible side effects. Here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_flush_reaction

The last part of the article worries me a little bit..they say it is possible that people with this are more susceptible to alcohol related diseases but further research is required. Geesh!

I think I am going to try going back to my vodka and diet's to see if that makes any difference. They also mention that taking certain antacids an hour before can prevent the reaction by further slowing the body's metabolism of the alcohol..allowing it to "catch up" I'm also reading of some people who are not asian and develop this suddenly in their thirties..and I was wondering if it is possible to develop an enzyme deficiency later in life?

Well..I don't mean to self-diagnose..but I look like I have a rash when I drink..so it sounds like I have this, and I am sure it's nothing. Hopefully it won't get any worse..and it really is not bad.. I just hate to be a sleepy drunk!
