    Default stress eating

    hi girls!

ok i really dont know what to do & feel right now.. I feel so torn apart.. I've been trying to lose weight and tone up working out at the gym with my trainer 3 times a week for the past 2-3 months.

The stress with my social life & im moving to las vegas soon to work full time as a dancer (so im putting A LOT of pressure on myself to be more thin and toned) from Sept to March (the busy seasons)

I dont know what got to me today but I have been binging horribly with snacks.. especially chocolate. I seem like I just cant stop eating and i'm just eating without thinking (which is the worst).. I know I am going to be 5 pounds heavier tomorrow morning already

does anybody have experiences with this? If so, what do you do?

    a) give yourself a break, you can't be perfect all the time. you need to give yourself a day to eat naughty or else you'll wind up being perfect for a week or two and then going off the track for two or three days.
    b) be realistic. do you look sexy? do you look good? I could honestly stand to lose fifteen or twenty pounds but I look sexy at the weight I'm at. Realize that your weight is just a number sometimes and that your confidence, and personality is going to be more worthwhile to you hustling in vegas (and I've worked at crazy horse and jaguars there at my current weight, so realize you can be a 7 or an 8 or a 9 in vegas. you don't have to be a perfect ten. btw, I'm an 8 1/2 )
    c) what can you do when you're stressed out that will help you? can you pay for a massage? why not get a new sex toy (I guarantee you'll spend a lot less time chowing down in front of the tv)? what else can you do that will keep you away from food when you're NOT HUNGRY but just feel like stuffing your face?

stress encourages weight gain (raised cortisol levels) - hello pimples and paunch.

deal with the stress first... and besides, chocolate is GOOD. (especially that sweet, dark chocolate.....)

when i was about to have a stress breakdown in my last semester at law school (around the time i was hyperventilating and sobbing on the floor in the fetal position.. awesome), i started getting acupuncture once a week. (japanese gentle style, not the hard core chinese one). did amazing things. the list of acupuncture miracles is amazing. everything from PMS (documented Flinders University study) to weight loss...

hmmm, I might have to try acupuncture. I eat when I'm stressed too. Last week I had a bad week and broke down and ate not one cookie but three. And I'd been so good about resisting them. Next week is a new week though.

If you need to burn off some nervous energy consider doing sit ups or some other type of excersise rather than eating.

If you just can't not eat then try keeping healthy foods around that take alot of chewing to consume or require some work to get into or prepare. My fav are soybeans still in their pods or dipping veggies that I have to wash and cut up.

Just eat pickles.. they have no calories, they taste great, and they come in all sorts of flavours, chewiness levels, and sizes!
I swear by pickles when I'm dying for a snack.

Oh and sometimes I get the pickled cocktain onions, and the pickled spicy veggies! yumm..

    I hate pickles...eewwwwww...

Ok...first, if you TELL yourself that you cannot have a certain thing, then you will begin wanting it all the more. A couple of cookies one day is not going to sabotage your diet. If you really feel like you need to pig out, do it...in moderation...eat whatever it is slowly...enjoy it. Then, forget about it. You do more damage to your body by snarfing stuff down and then worrying about it for the next week. Allow yourself those "forbidden" things and just let it go.

Also, maybe instead of eating those trans fat laden, sugar-coma inducing snacks, why not try eating some really sweet fruit with some whipped cream or something like that? It's much healthier and usually curbs my sweet cravings. But, if you want chocolate...just eat it...don't worry about it...and go back to your regular eating plan the next day.

Seriously, don't worry about it. But, if you keep having these days, I would strongly suggest you start journaling so you can see exactly what is bothering you, address the issue, and move on so you don't keep this pattern up.

    Good luck!

    Great advice.

I'm in a cutting phase right now. But I would suggest cutting all saturated fats out of your house. Keep your sugars low.

Now, there is some sage advice with the fruits when binging. And also I don't believe the binging is so much stress induced as it is potentially showing an inbalance in your diet. Nautalis is right, but there is also proof. You crave when your body is not getting what you need. Nutrient Timing as well as a good spaced out meal setup is most likely what you're looking for.

If you're binging, what for? Sugar? Eat fruits, but be careful it's a lot of sugars... but you do need them. Look into eating them early or before your workout where you'll need it most.

Finally, also you metabolism may be spiking as a result of your hard work. You may actually need to eat more! I know I did, when I got down to 11% BF I was starving all the time. I went backwards because I kept binging, but with the help of friends and research I set up a decent meal plan to stick to, and it's been keeping itself undercontrol.

IN SHORT: Don't pass this off on just stress. I'm sure it may be. But if you've been working hard you'll notice a difference not just in looks. But your life! Food intake being only part of that.

Go you! Kick ass in las vegas. In that city it's either Shank or Be Shanked.

    Hi sweetie,

Hang in there! I have had problems with stress eating in the past too. I used to be very into fitness training and weightlifting which requires a very strict diet of veggies, lean proteins and limited low glycemic carbs. I even used to weigh and measure my food... seriously, it was nutso.
Every once in a while my diet efforts would crash and burn and I would pretty much binge eat food, which was terrible for my waistline but even harder on my self esteem and psyche.

I now eat more moderately, but still train in the gym frequently and as a result I still have a slim body and a much more healthy (and happy!) attitude about food.
I still have a few tricks up my sleeve:

-Recognize your 'trigger' foods and keep them out of the house. There are some foods that you can't limit yourself on and its a disaster. Find some subtitutes such as light popcorn, the weight watchers ice cream bars (they are sooo good!) and high fiber bagels with PB and honey (best breakfast ever!).

-Eat some really yum desserts every once in a while-- like a slice of cheesecake from the cheescake factory- just don't bring more then a slice home!

-Try yoga to help calm your mind and relax.

-If you tend to eat a lot in the evening try a big dinner with a chicken breast, sweet potato and salad or green veggie. You will stay full!

-Acidic foods cut sweet cravings. I keep 100% unsweetened cranberry juice (NOT cranberry juice sweetened with grape juice) in my fridge. It is so nasty and bitter, but if you drink a cup of it down it may completely shut your craving off. Also try a salad with vinegar on it.

-Everyonce in a while decide to give in to a craving and enjoy yourself! View it as an investment in your sanity!

Ive been stress eating and also from alcohol detox. Im eating better slowly. Try eating smaller portions and eat them very slowly.
Or snack on a piece of fruit or a small salad before you want to have your "bad" food.

Sometimes when you think you're hungry you're actually dehydrated. If you've already had a healthy meal, drink a full bottle of cold water. If you're still hungry after that, have some coffee. Most of the time the water will fill you up and the caffeine will supress your appetite so you won't binge on junk food.

^ If you are dehydrated, one bottle of water isn't going to change that much and drinking caffeine will make you more dehydrated.

Set a schedule for yourself. If you are getting "hungry" between your meals and snacks, just drink a whole glass of water. After 5 minutes, if you are still hungry, eat some fruit/veggies. If you are 'craving' something, then just eat what you are craving...but in moderation...and only once a day.

I don't know, the water/caffeine thing always does the trick for me if I'm wanting to binge on bad foods. For me, it's better than eating the chocolate or tarts or what have you. If you are dehydrated from the caffeine, just up the water intake to more than a bottle.

The thing about binge eating, sometimes you can't eat certain foods in "moderation". A slice leads to a whole cake. I'd say avoid your trigger foods entirely if you find yourself eating those things uncontrollably.
