    Default OMG, No computer!

I just realized that if I let the movers pack my computers, I don't have any internet access in the home...

I'm wondering I don't want to bring my laptop on the plane. 5lbs (3.xKG) may well be too much, and it does not boot without actual power. I am very woried about losing it to security. Anyone ever post one of these things internationally or even nationally? I'm sure I can pack it good enough for travel. If I post it, I will keep the HD and Powersupply. I will need the contents of the HD.

Just wondering if there are any suggestions. I could pop out to the library, or a friends palce for free acess, but I'd much rather have one of my own systems. Also if I keep it, I could just post it the day we go to the airport.

I don't know if you have to have XP or OS X access while you're away from home. I guess you probably have experience with Linux, so you might consider one of the "tiny" Linux systems which you can boot from a USB flash drive. I've had the most luck with Puppy Linux and SLAX Linux, but I believe the same can be done with Damn Small Linux and Feather Linux. I usually use Puppy Linux, which I boot from a 512 MB mp3 player(still has enough room for not quite 150MB of songs), although I have to use a boot floppy to get it to boot on my old laptop. I also use a CF card in a PCMCIA converter as a substitute for a hard drive. It works well for me re: websurfing, email and wordprocessing. Even used it for free WiFi at the library a few times.

AFAIK, there isn't any technical reason the same couldn't be done with XP or OS X - it's just doing so would violate both Microsoft's and Apple's licenses. But there is a rumor floating of such a machine, without any hard-drive or optical drive at all, to be introduced by Apple this January. Possibly a subnotebook or Apple pocket computer.

As to a Linux-bootable flash drive, it's just something to look into - I don't know if it would work for your purposes, or not.

I can live with out the OS, I just need the files. I can of course burn them to DVD/CD. Really I just want one of my computers here until I move out. We have the movers comming about a week before we actually leave the country.

i don't see why you'd have any problems - as long as it's not sporting a lithium-ion 'exploda-batt'. (even then they didn't ban them yet)

everyone takes their lappies all the time. my satellite weighs the same as a small child and i haven't had issues. are you flying 'air nazi?' or something? my bf took his laptop to canada and back without any probs. (from Bris, through Syd).

usually they just 'swab and go'.... unless your HD is full of illegal porn and you're worried...LOL. i can't see why security would kidnap it from you otherwise

Nah no porn just won't boot without power.

I always nuke my porn before an international move. This is number 4.

No, nothing illegal, just a precautionary measure.

Well I've decided to bite the bullet and hope for the best. In other words, I'll take the dodgy overheating thing with me. Hope the weight restrictions don't kill me.
